The Orlando area initially. That is my hometown, and the place I lived for a good deal of my life, so it is always nice to be able to go back there and visit with family and friends around the holidays. I plan on being in Orlando through Christmas, and then I will head even further south (to the Western Caribbean) for New Years. After my escape to Florida and the tropics for the holidays, I will eventually return to OKC in January.

Should stay mild tonight with a cloud deck and SE flow. Low
probably around 70. Tomorrow's highs should be in the 80s.
No sign of that Arctic air getting anywhere near Florida
in the next 7 days.

My AC is back on in Palm Beach County, humidity and deep-layer Atlantic flow has overtaken the region. I hope everybody had a chance to enjoy the cooler than normal temperatures that lasted for several weeks here. It's a thing of the past.

I did see a nasty freeze Christmas 1983 in Orlando, but lets face it, unlike Texas, you Florida folks, except for those living away from the coast in the Panhandle, don't get to enjoy the four seasons like we do.

On the other hand, nobody around here goes to the beach in January, so it all works out.

The reason for the warmth in Florida is due to a combination of low and H5 ridges blocking anything from the north and west from pushing into the region. It's the H5 ridge I would like to point out based off of the 12Z GFS runs. You can see it extending from the Eastern Pacific all the way through the GOM and into the Bahamas even at 72 hours. Folks its not moving for at least 7 days (through this weekend). In other words winter has left Florida for quite a while.

Image

Then the GFS hints at the H5 ridge breaking down and shifting east into the Bahamas at 150 hours (Day 6 or next Mon.).
This setup would allow a weak front to push through Florida and fizzle out over South Florida. You can see the surface graphic at 150 hours showing the front pushing into Central Florida

Image

Image

But then that H5 ridge builds up again early next week. For example here is 228 hours (Day 8 or Wed. of next week)

Image

Even all the way out at 384 hours or 16 days from now that ridge is holding strong over Southern Florida the Bahamas and Cuba.

Image

Bottom-line: Looks like Florida and especially Southern Florida will see warm temperatures (running at least 5-7 degrees above normal, maybe as much as 10 degrees above normal) through the end of the year. I envision relatively nice conditions except for Sun/Mon timeframe with some scattered clouds and isolated showers then highs mostly in the 70s (80s south) and lows in the 60s (70s south). At this time Christmas looks to be relatively warm across peninsula Florida.

Note the GFS loses accuracy beyond 144 hours so we'll have to monitor it to see if it decides to break down the ridge in the long-term.

Your thermometer is getting some sunlight on it. It's not even near 90F in Tampa. Mesoanalysis shows temperatures around 77F in Tampa as of 1:00PM EST.

NWS is more accurate and here is what the 3:00PM EST roundup is showing. I see the 84F in Vanderberg but it seems a bit high compared to the other temps, likely because its on airport property grounds

Relocated it: 79*F at my house as of 345 PM EST, that sounds
more accurate :ggreen:
hard to keep the silly thing out of the sun as the sun angle shifts,
but I put it close to the bushes as I could and away from sunlight

Ignore the high reading from earlier, the sun likely passed over the bottom
part of the instrument briefly.

Bay news 9 said there would be a seabreeze, which would
bring temperatures down near the coast

Wind has been calm or less than 3mph and mainly out of the east for the last few hours here.

The 18z GFS completely squashes that ridge on Christmas Eve and replaces it with a trough. If this run were to be 100% correct (which it most likely will not be), then Florida could actually be looking at a below-average temperature regime come Christmas Day.

Indeed and NWS Miami takes note. It looks like a possibility that the ridge is going to break-down but the question is just how much and how much cold air makes it south:

LONG TERM...SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...GFS AND ECMWF NOW ARE IN
BETTER AGREEMENT AS TO WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THIS PERIOD. BOTH SHOW A
SHIFT IN THE MID/UPR LVL PATTERN AS THE POLAR JET DIVES SOUTH
ACROSS THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE COUNTRY KICKING THE UPR RIDGE
OUT OF THE AREA. THIS MAY RESULT IN A CDFNT APPROACHING AND
AFFECTING S. FL DURING THIS PERIOD. STILL, THERE ARE UNCERTAINTIES
AS TO HOW STRONG OR WEAK THIS SYSTEM COULD BE AND IF ANY PRECIP
WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH IT AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE LOCAL AREA. WL
ONLY INDICATE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF PRECIP FOR THE TIME BEING.
