Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution

Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Our investigation so far has shown that these attacks are only against Windows Internet Explorer 7 on supported editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, and Windows Server 2008. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, and Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows are potentially vulnerable.

I'm IE 7 with the service pack. I noticed probs just before we left on vacation. I made some calls seeking tech help and ended up speaking with a gentleman at the Secret Service......which really blew my mind. The hacker is overseas. I was advised to change everything.......all online accounts.....all c/c's I use online......even my checking that I transfer funds through online.

I've stopped using IE entirely and currently use Mozilla. All online transactions have ceased.

I still feel unsafe. I really wish I knew more about puters.

Actually, "zero-day" is a general term for an exploit that is first seen in the wild (that is the exploited vulnerability was unknown before a virus using it is out there.)

My personal preference is Firefox. it's smaller and faster than IE, but has many more features.

Google Chrome is another good option, but features are still pretty lacking.

Opera and Safari are also decent choices.

Each of these choices are both faster and more secure then IE. When I configure a new PC I only use IE once: just long enough to navigate to and download Firefox.

That's "xpiinstall" ..... it does not have the capability to fix the frozen restore date that is part of the fake antivirus. I'm told the frozen restore is hidden somewhere in start up menu. I know how to access this area although am reluctant to delete items I am not familiar with......?

Does anyone know the name of the file I need to delete? There are numerous acronyms in there which I have no idea what they stand for.....????????

I haven't used IE since Netscape first came out.. . I forced my parents to switch to Netscape (and now Firefox) by refusing to "fix" their computers until they did.

Get Firefox, download the extensions for Adblock and NoScript and you should be fine. . Firefox responds faster to hacks and security holes faster than MS anyway.

I've alway hated IE. .

. . .other than because some websites STILL can't be be bothered to handle something other than IE. . I can't see why people still use IE. . . well, other than stupid IT/management that thinks IE is safer than FireFox (not kidding. . come to where I work )

I fully agree by that statement. They have put a policy in place to block anything other then IE. I highly doubt that anyone has looked into this flaw since we are in a freeze currently for the next 2 weeks.

And, if you use Norton Anti-virus, the only other browser supported, besides IE, is Firefox.

I have a bunch of contacts bookmarked in IE. I want to send them to Mozilla Firefox. Is this going to be a hands on deal for each addy or is there one swift motion? I don't want any IE virus tagging along into Mozilla. I currently have a problem in IE but not Mozilla. Please respond. All the discussion I have read earlier gave good info and I appreciate it.

I never used IE when I didnt have to. I used Netscape until they closed that down, now I use Firefox full time.

Note that you can always import your Internet Explorer settings again in the future by clicking on the File menu and selecting Import....

We are still on 6.0 though. . .
