Re: Oil price over $147 for the first time-now below $40
I counted out the trading days. We were exactly at 25. Not counting the additional 5 days. Which, I do not understand at all? I was not aware it was trading days only. I am assuming there are only trading days on Mon-Fri? Anyway, thanx again......it's now water under the bridge.
Any suggestions for our next cruise? Have you got a favorite?

I didn't mean to sound confrontational in my earlier posts, so I apologize. I didn't understand why they had the 5-day period before the cruise either, but it was in the policy. I found it last night just to be sure.
Of all the cruises we've done, our two favorites so far are the 7-day Eastern Caribbean on Carnival Glory out of Port Canaveral (to be replaced by Carnival Dream on the same alternating Eastern and Western voyages starting in 2010) which goes to Nassau, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten and the 7-day Western Caribbean on Carnival Miracle (now sailed by Carnival Legend) out of Tampa which goes to Grand cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Costa Maya. We liked the itinerary better on the Miracle (now Legend), but the Carnival Glory is a fantastic ship with the best cruise director.
We do short 3 day and 4 day cruises on Carnival Inspiration (to Cozumel out of Tampa) and Carnival Sensation (to Nassau out of Port Canaveral) for long weekends away once or twice a year. The price can't be beaten during the dead season.
I have two pieces of advice to save money on cruises:
First, sail during the dead seasons: September through mid-November and mid-January through February. The fares are unbeatable, often cheaper than just hotel rates for similar lengths of time. Of course sailing September - November carries risk of hurricane diversions, so be flexible (and park up high in the parking deck if it's an option!). We always take our week-long cruise in September or October and get rates of ~$75 per person per day staying in a balcony cabin. We also do one or two short cruises during that time and during January - February for similar rates.
Second, once you pick a ship and a date, use CruiseCompete.com to find the best rate. The site allows travel agents to compete for your booking, resulting in very large savings every single time. Just read the fine print and be aware that some of the agents charge cancellation fees.

The oil market rebounded as the Gaza conflict worried oil investors about an expansion of it.

If you haved noticed, gas prices haved risen a little bit as crude oil goes up (Closed at $48.81 on Monday) in part because of the Gaza conflict. Here it rose 2 cents a liter now at 39.7.In Puerto Rico, its by liter and not by gallons that we buy gas.

They don't even make oil in Gaza.

Then again, we're not any less dependent on oil now than we were at $4/gallon. They can charge what they want.
My town's lowest prices shot from $1.33 to $1.51 over a few days.

With oil traders starting to book tankers for storage, it would seem some believe prices will start rising again soon.
A nice round $60 to $90 a barrel would make me happy, oil industry jobs would be safe and the economy wouldn't be too badly affected.

Good luck with that. Oil approached $50/bbl today and then it collapsed back to $42.80/bbl.
They may be hunting tankers to store the oil because it's on the way and they have nowhere to put it.

We've seen the same upturn in prices here in Houston. Gas has risen 0.16 in 3 days here!!
I saw one station that went up 0.10 yesterday.

Got our Centerpoint Energy bill....natural gas.
customer charge=$9.30
base amount 77 ccf @0.10060=$7.75
gas cost adjustment 77 ccf @ 0.84990=$65.44
municipal franchise adjustment $3.17
total 85.66
That makes our gas cost adjustment 800% over our usage.

Regular gas has been hanging out at $1.499 for the past week. It had jumped about 15 cents from the previous price.

I paid 1.689 today.....a 30 cent jump. Apparently these price changes may become the norm.
My wife and daughter went car shopping today.....they left at noon....it's almost 7:30 now. Around 3 PM they told me they were considering an Accura (sp?) as opposed to their dream car the BMW.
I hope they bring a BMW home. It's our daughters car....she's buying it....not me. See....there is a God. Proof positive.
I think they got tired of bouncing around in work trucks.

The current low prices are sowing the seeds for the next shortage and price spike.

Petrobras cancels Papa-Terra platform bid process
By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, Jan. 19 -- Petroleo Brasilerio SA (Petrobras), citing uncertain market conditions, suspended the tenders for building the P-61 tension-leg well platform and P-63 floating production, storage, and offloading vessel for the Papa-Terra field, which lies in the Campos basin off Brazil.
The company noted that proposals received had an excessive cost.
Petrobras had expected the Papa-Terra field, discovered in 2003, to go on stream in 2011.
The company has formed an internal working group to analyze alternatives for developing the field that holds an estimated 700 million bbl of 14-17° gravity oil. Water depth is about 1,200 m.
Chevron Overseas of Brazil Ltd. is a partner in the field and holds a 37.5% interest

True, that is one big cause. It's also the time of year when refineries are going offline a few at a time to retool back to making summer blend and to make repairs. When refinery capacity is reduced, the price of refined goods increases.
