When it comes to models (computer models, that is!), I'm a Europhile. Especially in winter. Given the Euro's consistency and track record ... seeing that some very respected pro mets on other boards have been talking for days about a deep trough developing over portions of the central and eastern U.S. ... seeing those bitter cold Alaska temps ... and seeing that the GFS ensembles basically show the same, I'm thinking there is something to this.
Then again, I've been known to get suckered from time to time.

Re: Arctic airmass is on the way
been snowing all morning in Niagara Falls area , though temperatures at my location are now a nudge above freezing (33F) so its a very wet snow. Its also quite windy (from the south west) bringing in these relatively milder temperatures. But the 30s wont last... it will fall right through the 20s this afternoon and into the lower teens by the time im coming back home later tonight after work. Along with winds veering northwesterly behind the frontal passage brrrr

Hey, don't you have some weather to follow in Florida or something!

nah, that gets boring after a while..texas weather this winter has been much more interesting....from snow to 85 and back again....watching just south florida weather in winter is like watching the atlantic from atlantic city north during the tropical season....gotta branch out to get to the good stuff...although by tomorrow, my attentions will very much turn towards seeing if we can finally drop below 50 deg this week.
But it is still not respectable winter weather even....at our coolest we will still be warmer than most if not all of the continental u.s. (high of 70, low of 50). What would folks in the Midwest give for such an arctic outbreak.....in May.

And to think the Conchs will have to break out the parkas, long pants and real shoes, instead of sandals.

If the GFS is right, the coldest EYW gets is 60ºF.
Long pants, maybe, parkas, I don't think so.

Believe me, I lived there for 5 years from 2001-2006. The locals will be freezing with those temps. Anything below 72 is an Artic Blast to them. Particularly with a strong and gusty N wind. Makes for fun days on the reef and fishing in FL Bay. The tourists laugh and the "locals" bundled up like it's -10.

NWS has 8 here Friday Morning. It would be only the second time this decade to hit single digits and the first time in 6 years.

When did you move to Canada? Didn't you used to live in Texas?
If so, what a change in the weather!

Re: Arctic airmass is on the way
Excerpt from NWS Miami Discussion....
RIGHT NOW NO HIGHLIGHTS ISSUED FOR THE BOUT
OF COOL/COLD WEATHER BUT AREA INTERESTS SHOULD BEGIN PREPARATION FOR
PROTECTION OF ASSETS FROM THE COOLER WEATHER.
They are just not going to use the word 'cold' outright with this event for south florida (east metro areas in particular). Temps will stay in the high 40's to low 50's so not really any threat to vegetation or agriculture. More just the unusual act of wearing a jacket and dealing with early morning wind chill.....by afternoon we should be 70+ on most days according to latest forecast.
Can't help but wonder if NWS is being a bit 'cheeky' with their phrasing above.

Around my neck of the woods, Thursday - Saturday look like "D" day with those extremely cold temperatures and then, thankfully, they'll be back in the 30's.

Here in Northern Middle Tennnessee, I'm forecasted to reach a low of 0ºF on Thursday night per the NWS office in Nashville and -2ºF per accuweather (which I know most people don't like, but I have no problem with them). Scottsville, KY; which is about 10-15 minutes north of me, is forecasted to have Wind Chill values as low as -11ºF on Thursday night
