Re: BREAKING NEWS=U.S Airways plane down in Hudson River
Bird Strikes are pretty common. I was waiting to board a plane in STL years ago and the arriving flight impacted a bird on landing. Absolutely crushed the nose cone of the plane but it landed safely. Needless to say my flight out got delayed a bit.
Below is a youtube video of a bird strike on a Boeing 757 involving 1 bird. You can see the damage a single bird can do to an engine, now imagine running into a flock of geese. Amazing job by the pilots and crew on getting the plane down safely and getting everyone off safely.

Re: U.S Airways plane down in Hudson River=All 155 people safe
Captain/pilot is a former USAF pilot and has 29 years as a commercial pilot.
No info on the First Officer/co-pilot yet.
Remarkable landing. CNN reporting he was the last man of the A320....after checking out the fuselage for passengers.

Great graphics Hurakan!
The plane landed just north of the Lincoln Tunnel which is indicated but not labeled in the third graphic. That's right around the Theater District.
That pilot inparticular deserves a medal. There's speculation that he purposely landed the plane in the Hudson because he wouldn't make it to an airport. It also avoided a potential tragedy involving people inland. The man made several passes through the plane to make sure no one else was on it before he left too. The videos showing the ferries, tugboats and Coast Guard speeding their way to the plane was incredible. THAT'S how an emergency is to be handled! Hats off to everyone involved!
The plane was towed to a pier off of the Battery on the lower end of Manhatten.

Kudos to the pilots. This is why recurrent training is so important. They are trained vigorously for such emergencies. Bird strikes are very common. Usually hitting one engine, but both, that's insane. Aircraft can normally make it back to an airport safely on one engine. I've seen a couple bird strikes in PIT on landing. One damaging the nose cone and the other breaking the windshield. They are definately not something to take lightly. People think... its just a bird, what can it possibly do? Well this is it.

Channel 7 Miami says that Canadian geese were the birds that affected the plane. PETA released an statement saying that this beautiful air kittens were attracted by the noise of the plane and were trying to fix the problem before being sucked into the engines.

I keep telling people that the Canada goose population in New Jersey is outrageous and borderline needs to be controlled in some way.

There truly are too many Canadian Geese in New Jersey but if we tried to control it we'd just have Bald Eagles flying into jet engines instead. Controlled hunts don't make alot of sense when the majority of geese are in densely populated areas. The best bet would be some sort of Über-powerful metal screen over the engines to prevent large debris (like birds) from getting in the turbines.
[edit] Sorry, I meant Canadian Sky Kitties.

I'm sure this incident will get such ideas in motion.
