What do you do when you are invited somewhere?
I have an ongoing disagreement with my brother. He says that when you are invited to somebodies house that you can show up empty handed and that it is perfectly OK. I am of the opinion that if you are invited over, one should bring some little gift. Anything will do, a cheap bunch of flowers, a nice bottle of wine, or anything in between. What do you do?

It depends on the situation. If it is close friends that you do things with often, then no. If it is a casual acquaintance then yes. But sometimes it just feels good to give a little gift.
I have a friend who has an open house at christmas every year. Because of the time she has taken to open her home to her friends i bring a little gift. I've brought sweets in the past and this year i had found the cutest little christmas suction cup wineglass charms.

Being a novice wine collector, I will always bring a bottle when invited over to someone's house.

Well, we're boring and don't go out much. LOL!!!
But when we are invited to parties they're usually the type you're requested to bring an appetizer. So I do. Each and every time. If I'm not requested to bring a side dish, etc. I bring a bottle of wine or a few times, a hostess gift (homemade caramel popcorn, etc.).
I do believe it's polite to bring something.
I remember asking our close friends to bring appetizers to a large party we hosted, year ago. And I clearly remember one couple walking in the door with a bag of pretzels they picked up at a convenient store. She tossed the bag on my counter and said - here ya go! A wife did that! I was hoping for something a little more elaborate! I never quite forgot that and I didn't ask her for food contributions again.
I would have never walked into a party, holding a bag of pretzels. Unless I was much younger and it was a frat party.
Sometimes I think even a bag of ice would be appreciated (if it's an outdoor party, you go thru so much ice!).......
Just something thoughtful. Wine is the standard gift. But it could be a basket of cookies, mixed nuts, etc. To put out. Or a candle.
It's nice to be greeted at the door without empty hands.
So yes, it's something I definitely do. But I don't show up holding a bag of pretzels! LOL
One more comment - we attend a large New Years Day party each year. We've learned to bring our appetizer on a disposable plate or platter I pick up at a party store. If you have to make your way back over to the food table (which is quite extensive), then you're stopped many more times, just trying to move your food off onto a paper plate and then say goodbye to more people. It may take another hour to get out the door. We tend to just sneak out when it's time for us to leave (since it's an open house). I know that sounds tacky but I have learned - bring the food on a plate that can stay at the party!

Dan, I think you're on the right track. A nice bottle of Chardonnay or a Reisling is always good. All large grocery stores have a floral department where they have a great selection of cut flowers too.

wine, you could never go wrong. Its not that expensive and its a good gesture.

My wife makes a killer blueberry cobbler. We have our own blueberry bushes and always harvest enough to last the year. So we take the blueberry cobbler for everyone to enjoy. I'm beginning to think we're invited only because of the cobbler.

The pink ribbon is Komen Race for the Cure....I am stage chair. My wife Bec is a survivor.....that's how I got involved. Last name is Dionne....French from Quebec. It confuses a lot of folks. And NO......I don't know how to make the cobbler.
