Seems like I just got hit by a mini-Tropical storm. Winds were very strong, in excess of 40mph I think. Rain and full garbage cans were blowing sideways! I wouldnt be surprised if there were limbs broken off trees. That SVR was well issued. Bay News 9 showed numerous circulations around the county, I'm glad it didnt turn out to be a tor warn. The rain sure was swirling. This 20% chance of rain was the worst chance of rain i've had in a while. That air is COLD too. Oh the joy of living in Florida. Major surprise tonight.

wow pretty unbelievable I have to say -- down here in Southern Florida I suspect that the bulk of the energy will diffuse before it makes it here but if I wake up to some strong winds later tonight I'll know why -- winds are gusty behind the front as expected and I'm not looking forward to NW winds at 15-25 mph with higher gusts...

I was in the Davis Islands for Frances where I witnessed 70mph wind gusts and they can be very scary -- knocked out power and transformers...no power for about 3 weeks.

Sounds about right....usually can be at least a 10 deg difference in temp from Tampa to south florida when airmasses like this cover the state...sometimes more.

Weather channel meteoroligsts continue to show lows several degrees warmer for peninsula Florida, even up to 5-7F degrees warmer in many locations. For example, Tampa's projected coldest low from this front is 35F and West Palm Beach is 35F also (note the reason for the same temps here is due to a slight NNW component to the wind keeping the west coast of FL as warm as the East Coast), NWS offices have Tampa bottoming out at 28F. No freeze forecast from Weather Channel for anywhere in SE Florida including inland Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.

It will be interesting to see if the local weather offices are correct or if the Weather channel meteorologists are correct. Clearly the weather channel meteorologists are seeing something that local NWS office are not seeing.

Watch for NWS offices to slowly nudge up the projected low temps over the next couple of days...

I think they are correct....the NWS Miami has only issued freeze watch for the northern interior....glades and hendry counties and western palm beach for tonight. A wind chill advisory is in effect for areas further south. Western Broward and inland Collier added to Freeze Watch tomorrow night. No watches for Miami-Dade or metro broward and palm beach.

...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY
MORNING FOR GLADES, HENDRY AND INLAND PALM BEACH...
...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING FOR GLADES, HENDRY, INLAND COLLIER, INLAND PALM
BEACH AND WESTERN BROWARD...

TWC only relays NWS watches and warnings....i don't believe (but could be wrong), that they can contradict them or disregard them in their forecasts.

I believe the weather channel can make independent forecast without regards to local NWS offices. I know for hurricane forecasts, they have even deviated from NHC forecast cones.

from NWS Miami

...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY
MORNING FOR GLADES, HENDRY AND INLAND PALM BEACH...
...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING FOR GLADES, HENDRY, INLAND COLLIER, INLAND PALM
BEACH AND WESTERN BROWARD...

Link to The Weather Channel listing of all the NWS watches, warnings, and advisories....did catch one error...list Metro Broward for Freeze Watch Wed night but when you click link it list the western portion (non-metro) of the county only.

Looks like TWC is on the same page...may have been a question of how quickly TWC updated its forecasts to go with NWS though.

Latest NWS Miami package just out -- indeed they have nudged up temps a couple of degrees or so across the CWA. Looks like even far inland Palm Beach County going to stay above freezing withs lows around 34F to 35F.

Note a FREEZE watch remains in effect for inland Palm Beach and Broward counties but if trends continue it may be lifted.

As of latest update, NWS Miami forecasting for lows tonight and on wednesday, respectively:

West Palm Beach 35, 36
Fort Lauderdale 40, 41
Miami 42, 42

If this forecast verifies, it would be the coldest temps since last January when West Palm hit 35 deg and both Fort Lauderdale and Miami hit 39 deg on 1/3/08.

Add in the wind and this will be a very cold event by south florida standards. Unlike with the cold we 'kinda' saw last week, a pretty rapid and sustained warming trend is on tap starting before the weekend even begins as temps return to normal/slightly above normal (esp for lows) with no major fronts on the immediate horizon. It is quite possible this could be the 'cold event' of the season....but there is about another 4 week window for more arctic outbreaks so I will not make that a forecast yet, just a possibility.

The ongoing drought has taken a back seat to the current coldsnap, but in addition to the numerous frost and freeze warnings, there are also fire weather watches for what is being considered 'extreme fire danger' in some areas. This type of airmass...along with the wind....will dry places out even further.

The latest KBDI drought index is astounding....average kbdi values for the state in January are in the 200-450 range. The values we see now are very alarming, esp since fire season is still not even upon us.

In Key Largo this evening. Can't wait to walk out on the balcony in the morning with temps in the 40s. It will be a little chilly for all these sailboats... Its got to be a good break from the other 11.5 months of the year :)
