Re: Florida Weather Thread: cooler pattern
I managed 34-29-35 the last three nights. Still not colder than last January's cold snap, but I think this one was longer.

Re: Florida Weather Thread: cooler pattern
Hit the beach today... I will say that this is perfect weather by my standards. Back in Wisconsin we see a lot of days like this (bluebird days). Few clouds right now but still gorgeous. I know the locals probably think its still cold, but i'll take this over upper 80's and mid 70's dewpoints. I don't think i could handle a south Florida summer unless i had one of those pads on the beach with a boat to match
Waded in the ocean but it was still chilly. Saw plenty of brave souls going in. I"ll probably go swimming tomorrow. Today i was by Earl Lifshey Ocean Park area. I can't believe the age of some of these people working at the grocery stores. I swear one lady was in her 90's! I'm guessing employees are hard to come by on these lower wage jobs. The high rises on A1A are also nuts. The view from the top floor must be awesome during summer storms.
I'll add one complaint... The traffic lights in Broward/Dade are so annoying...Ahhh! Gun it, brake, gun it, brake... You know the drill.

Re: Florida Weather Thread: cooler pattern
Looking ahead. The NWS Miami says the GFS shows a strong Carribean High controlling the weather for next weekend. While the Euro. Shows a much weaker High and a kind of strong front coming through. Any insight?

January 2009 Month-to-date stats (Jan 1-Jan 23) with departure from normal in ( )...with the above normal temps next week, Miami may end up with a month of basically 'close to average' temps...Fort Lauderdale is exactly at 'normal' even including the coldsnap, so no where to go but slightly above average. West Palm will probably end up 1-1.5 deg below normal for the month...nothing too radical.
Speaking of radical...check out the desert-like rainfall totals...0.04" - 0.11" for the entire month so far.
West Palm Beach
Avg. Temp: 63.9 (-2.4)
Rain: 0.11" (-2.71")
Fort Lauderdale
Avg. Temp: 67.6 (+0.0)
Rain: 0.04" (-2.10")
Miami
Avg. Temp: 67.0 (-1.2)
Rain: 0.08" (-1.30")
(all data from NWS Miami CF-6 Local Climate Data, updated through 1/23/09).

Jinftl-
Isn't that because the station in Ft. Lauderdale was moved to a warmer spot, so the averages are kind of not right? I agree that the heat is coming back. Into the 80's by next week. It was 4F today in LaCrosse, 74F here
Going home tomorrow
Spent almost the whole day at Ft. Lauderdale beach... Pretty busy down there, lot of boats out on the ocean...watched the Coast Guard helicopter fly right down the beach, which was pretty cool.
Dewpoints are back in the 50's...

Re:
Ft Lauderdale airport is close to the ocean...maybe a mile or 2 at its closest end....that does result in warmer low temps almost all year.....the number of nights over 80 deg at the airport was something like 30 this summer. The ccean also keep temps a notch or two cooler by day in the summer...not as many 90+ days, just 88 or 89 instead with a dewpoint of 78....tropical for sure.
Almost every month of 2008, FLL had warmer monthly average lows than Miami Int'l Airport 25 miles to the south (ssw).....due to the closer proximity to the ocean. If you really want to see a difference in temps check out Miami Beach averages compared to those of the aiport only 7 miles west. Can average 5 warmer at night, 5 deg cooler by day than Miami airport. In the peak of summer, avg high/avg low at Miami Beach is 88/81.

I do think the thermometer at West Palm Beach is reading about 4 degrees cooler than it should. Note the thread I started on this issue. I don't see how its possible Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are average about 4 degrees warmer. Also, whenever I compare the temperature at my house (west of airport) to West Palm Beach its about 3-4 degree difference.

Re:
I would be curious to see what other areas of central palm beach county bottomed out at during the cold snap....it does seem 'suspicious' that an urban area of the county closer to the coast would be reading lower than the surrounding areas to the west. Even within Broward and Miami-Dade, there was a 10 deg difference from the city/airport/coastal location and areas to the west in the farthest western suburbs (but the expected warmer reading at the airport).
But keep in mind that West Palm is 70 miles north of Miami (and about 45 miles north of Fort Lauderdale).....esp in the winter that can definitely lead to somewhat colder temps....that distance is about 1/3 of the way from Miami to Orlando...and there is an 8-10 deg difference from Miami to Orlando in average winter temps, so 3 or 4 deg overall between Miami and West Palm isn't too hard to imagine.
Data from Florida Climate Center...avg high/low in West Palm is 74/56 now...for Miami it is 76/59.

I think the temps at PBI make perfect sense when viewed within the context of the map on the prior page and the report from the NWS. One thing is obvious from looking at that map... the temps in dade, broward and palm beach county vary widely and those 3 counties cannot be viewed the same way...palm beach is clearly much colder overall. A 4 degree misreading is huge and it wouldn't just exist on the coldest night of winter, it would exist all the time which means it probably would have been discovered long before now. Gatorcane, I think your "warm obsession" may be clouding your judgement here however if you truly believe official readings at PBI are 4 degrees too cold you should contact the national weather service in Miami with your concerns and let us know the results.
