Woman gives birth to octuplets
Doctors said they didnt expect the 8th one.I hope that all will be fine.
(CNN) -- A woman in California delivered what may be the nation's second live-born set of octuplets on Monday morning, surprising doctors who expected seven babies.
The first three to seven days will be critical for the infants, Dr. Mandhir Gupta said.
The six boys and two girls -- ranging in weight from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds 4 ounces -- were generally doing well in incubators following their Caesarean-section delivery at Kaiser Permanente hospital in Bellflower, California, doctors said.
Three of the babies need breathing assistance, but otherwise the eight don't appear to have serious problems, doctors said at a news conference Monday evening.
"It was a truly amazing delivery," said Dr. Karen Maples, chief of the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department.
Doctors initially believed the mother -- whom they did not identify -- was pregnant with seven fetuses. The woman was 23 weeks pregnant when she was hospitalized seven weeks ago and ordered to bed rest.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
Great news from the hospital that the 8 Babies are doing very well.
BELLFLOWER, Calif. – The octuplets born to a mother in Southern California are doing "very, very well" and breathing on their own, one of their doctors said Tuesday.
Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, told ABC's "Good Morning America" the eight babies were in stable condition.
Two of the newborns — the second live octuplets born in U.S. history — were initially put on ventilators, but their breathing tubes have been removed.
"Only three babies need some sort of oxygen through the nose right now but they are breathing on their own," Gupta said. "The babies are doing actually very, very well."

68 now, huh?

I'm glad the babies are doing well. I can't imagine having that many kids at once.

More great news from the doctors.

Two of the newborns — the world’s second live-born set of octuplets — were initially put on ventilators, but their breathing tubes have been removed.
"All babies seem to be stable," Dr. Karen Maples, chief of the department of obstetrics and gynecology "All of them are now breathing on their own and are no longer requiring ventilators."
The mother, who was not identified, gave birth Monday to the six boys and two girls weighing between 1.8 pounds and 3.4 pounds. The eighth baby was a surprise to the parents and doctors who had been expecting only seven children.
Just five minutes after the first birth, the unexpected eighth baby came out at 10:48 a.m.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
Woman who gave birth to octuplets already has 6 kids?
The California woman who gave birth to eight babies in five minutes Monday may have already been a mother of six, ABC News has learned.
A California woman who gave birth to octuplets may have already had six kids, according to reports.
The octuplets, who were born by Caesarean section and delivered by a 46-member team of doctors at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., arrived nine weeks premature.
The eighth baby shocked the hospital delivery team, which had been planning for a seven-baby delivery for weeks. The two girls and six boys ranged in weight from 1 pound, 8 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces and totaled over 24 pounds.
The woman, whose name has not been released by the hospital, is only the second ever to give birth to octuplets. The hospital staff would not comment on whether she had received fertility drugs, which have been linked with instances of multiple births.

This story is taking a twist today. Latest newscast videos show the small house they live in, a ranch with only 2 or 3 bedrooms. The mother now has 14 children to care for. No mention of a father either........many ethical questions coming into play now.
While 8 new babies are something to celebrate and cherish, I'm with those officials asking these tough questions now - why would you have 8 embryos implanted when the mother already has 6 young children to take care of and feed?

This woman will need help to care for 14 children. 14!
There's a couple who live about 16 miles from here that have 21 kids. They live in a 6 bedroom house, but said in an interview recently that they need a bigger one.

I always say to each his own, but I can not imagine 14 kids or 18 kids or 21 kids no matter what!!! I often wonder if at least some of the families this large do it for the money? Look at the number of large family shows(documentary)that are on the tube these days. You know they don't do it for free or afford a 7000 sq ft house on a normal income. I could be way off base here, but you know they are paid hefty sums to lose their privacy.

My thoughts exactly. I often wonder what their motives are as well. I know that sounds like a harsh opinion to make, when I'm usually very open minded and tolerant. But these are little children, with hungry mouths to feed. And above all, need love and attention too. Can you imagine what it will be like when they all get into the school phase? Extra curricular activities, sports, not to mention HOMEWORK!
Okay, my mind is racing so I'll quit.
I'm just happy with two, thank you very much.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
Never mind 14 children, 14 CHILDREN 7 OR YOUNGER!
A "normal" large family would have older children to be able to help out with the younger siblings. This is a 24/7 preschool!
Can you imagine their teenage years? The food bills?
The SMELL? (I am sorry, but teens, and sports bags and sneaker feet? eewwww!)

God bless those little ones. He'll sure need to be looking out for them.
The woman lives with her parents in a 3 bedroom home. Why in the world would she have those eggs implanted and what Dr. would ethically do that? Is there a husband?
Do you get a bigger welfare check for every baby you have?
I know, sit down and shut up Karan. I will.
