Woman gives birth to octuplets
Moderator: S2k Moderators
weathermom and Karan - I'm with you both on this one. My mind is racing imagining what their homelife will be like. Lots of diapers, spills, 24/7 care. It's enough to make me want to take a nap! Wow.....I wish them well, but I do wonder why this happened. And question as well, did she think she'd receive more in welfare?
The kindest thing of all would be give these children up for adoption.
But that will never happen.

The woman lives with her parents in a 3 bedroom home. Why in the world would she have those eggs implanted and what Dr. would ethically do that? Is there a husband?
Do you get a bigger welfare check for every baby you have?
I know, sit down and shut up Karan. I will.
Valid questions. I can't imagine why a woman would do this if she didn't have a husband, never mind the fact that she already had 6 other children, all under 7 years old. She knew for several months that this was a multiple pregnancy - did she even consider where she was going to put all of these children in that tiny house? I don't get it.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
I have another question concerning this, which might be answered by the fact she supposedly works in a fertility clinic. What are the ethics involved, if any, of a doctor implanting a woman who already has 6 children and limited resources. Even if he has no way of knowing her resources available I would presume, is it within the doctors perview to say "no I will not implant you because you already have 6 children"? Some tough questions all around on this one imo.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
This case has more twists and turns than an F5 tornado. Here is another twist:
LOS ANGELES – The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.
Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.
"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

Sounds like she really needs some counseling...an obsession with having kids
is very dangerous for both the mother and the children...also hope child
protective departments can offer care and assistance to the 14 children...1 mother
will have a hard time with that...especially in that tiny house...
I don't mean this as an insult- I think counseling and help from child protective
departments would be the most helpful thing for all people involved.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
If she works in a fertility clinic as stated in one article this begs the question of ethics. Who is doing the implanting of the embryos? No doctor who is ethical would do this. The most that are normally implanted is 2 or 3, not 8. This is per Dr. Nancy Sneiderman on NBC this morning.

I understand what you are saying, but do you realize the stress that carrying 8 babies
has on the mother? And also puts her at high risk of all kinds of complications.
I don't think she would purposely have this many kids for welfare money, seriously.
Also she has not put her name out, it seems if she was $$$$$$$$ hungry she would
have because all kinds of people would have given her anything and everything she
could possibly need or want.
I dunno about the whole situation, it doesn't make any sense to me on her logic here. I am sure there is some underlying reason whether it is good or bad in nature who knows.
I just hope they all grow and develop normally with no complications, and hopefully their home life will be okay as well. We all jump to conclusions when hear stories like this but you don't know what the whole story is. I would be curious to know though. Until then I will try to keep an open mind about it and hope for the best for all involved.

My apologies if this article was already printed. The Grandmother speaks up. Saying she will be GONE when the mother gets home from the hospital (meaning, with the new 8 children if healthy enough to come home). Meanwhile the Grandmother is at the house baby-sitting the other children. Asked if her daughter was going to have anymore children, granny said "She doesn't have any more (frozen embryos), so it's over now," she said. "It has to be."

She doesn't have any more......OMG!
This family sounds more and more like one you'd see on the Jerry Springer show.
*edit* one more, via a link from the above article. The Grandmother states she wishs her daughter had just become a Kindergarten teacher!

Sounds similar.
It does, doesn't it?
She may have all the love in the world for these children, but there's no way in heck that she's going to be able to do right for all of them.

Re: Woman gives birth to octuplets
Another twist on this story that is turning into a hollywood circus.Read below
The mother of octuplets born in California last week is seeking $2 million from media interviews and commercial endorsements to help pay the costs of raising the children, the Times of London reported.
Nadya Suleman, 33, plans a career as a television childcare expert. It was learned last week that she already had six children before giving birth to eight more. She now has 14 children younger than 8 years old.
Although still confined to a Los Angeles hospital bed, Suleman reportedly intends to talk to two influential television hosts this week — media mogul Oprah Winfrey and Diane Sawyer.
Her family has told agents she needs cash from media deals.
Suleman is being deluged with offers for book deals, TV shows and other business proposals, but according to her publicist she hasn't decided what she might do once she leaves the hospital.
On Friday she retained the Killeen Furtney Group public relations firm to handle what company President Joann Killeen says are hundreds of offers arriving daily. They include requests for paid interviews, TV show appearances, book deals and other opportunities.
Killeen says Suleman is "the most sought after mom in the world right now," but she hasn't decided what she'll do next, other than care for her children.
But Suleman's earning power could be diminished by the growing ethical and medical controversies surrounding her octuplets' birth. Experts believe that the unnamed fertility specialists who gave her in vitro fertilization (IVF) should not have implanted so many embryos, and in choosing to carry all eight to term, Suleman ignored guidelines, risking both the babies' health and her own.
Public reaction has been mixed: Many have asked how an unemployed single mother can raise 14 children, as her first six have already strained the family budget. Angela and Ed Suleman, Nadya’s parents, bought her a two-bedroom bungalow in the Los Angeles suburb of Whittier in March 2007, but soon fell on hard times and had to leave their own home.

Nothing at all, I repeat, nothing, surprises me anymore......
I am going to sound like my parents now but what is wrong with younger generations and people not wanting to do the right thing?
She is going to subject these babies to the media. As if they're a litter of puppies.....
It's shameful.....

I won't be watching any interview with her if I can avoid it. The woman is sick and needs help and I am not talking about money. I need to stop now so I don't break rules here. And any medical personnel involved need to be prosecuted by whatever means necessary at any available levels. I don't know what if any laws were broken but the ethics on this one are out the door!!!

I completely agree, this story is making me more and more sick by the day.
