February temp changes..the seasonal ramp up begins

#1 Postby jinftl » Mon Feb 09, 2009 11:03 am

Although it is still winter, we are just about a time of the year when avg temperatures start to ramp up....and at a progressively faster pace as we progress through the month of february. The increased sun angle and longer days no doubt contribute to the lessening of the grip winter has on the U.S. from the perspective of average temps.

The average hi/low temps on both February 1 and February 28 are listed for the selected cities below (data from NWS Local Climate page for cities)....it is still winter, but spring is on the horizon...

New York City (Central Park)
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 39/26
February 28 = 44/30

Atlanta
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 54/34
February 28 = 60/40

Chicago
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 31/16
February 28 = 39/23

Duluth
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 20/1
February 28 = 28/10

Miami
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 77/59
February 28 = 79/62

Houston (IAH)
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 64/42
February 28 = 70/47

Denver
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 45/17
February 28 = 50/22

Fairbanks, AK
Avg Hi/Low
February 1 = 3/-18
February 28 = 15/-12

Indeed, we start to see avg highs and lows increase across the country.

I like to use TWCs graphs to see nice graphs of these averages. For example, here is Atlantas:

Another thing that will add to the perception that we are transitioning into spring and even summer comes in less than 4 weeks....daylight savings time ends on March 8. Late sunsets always has a feel of 'summer'....and in time, the temps will follow!
