MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0093
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1113 PM CST TUE FEB 10 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL AND NRN AR THROUGH SRN MO

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 11...12...

VALID 110513Z - 110645Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 11...12...CONTINUES.

WW 11 WILL LIKELY BE REPLACED BY A NEW WW BEFORE ITS EXPIRATION TIME
OF 06Z. THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS INCLUDING ISOLATED TORNADOES IS
EXPECTED TO PERSIST NEXT SEVERAL HOURS FROM AR NWD THROUGH SRN MO.

LATE THIS EVENING AN AXIS OF MODEST INSTABILITY WITH MUCAPE FROM
500-1000 J/KG EXTENDS ACROSS MUCH OF AR...BUT IS MORE LIMITED
FARTHER NORTH INTO MO. LOW LEVEL THETA-E ADVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH A
STRONG 65+ KT LOW LEVEL JET SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO DESTABILIZATION A
LITTLE FARTHER NWD INTO S CNTRL AND SE MO. FORCED SQUALL LINE
EXTENDING FROM SW MO...NW AR AND SWWD THROUGH ERN TX WILL ADVANCE
EAST THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND HAS BECOME
THE MAIN THREAT WITH THIS LINE. HOWEVER...ISOLATED TORNADOES REMAIN
POSSIBLE WITH ANY EMBEDDED SUPERCELL STRUCTURES.

VERY LARGE LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS WITH 0-1 KM HELICITY FROM 400-500
M2/S2 EXIST ALONG LOW LEVEL JET AXIS FROM ERN TX INTO THE LOWER MS
VALLEY. MORE DISCRETE CONVECTION DEVELOPING AHEAD OF THE LINE ACROSS
AR HAS SO FAR BEEN SUPPRESSED AND SLIGHTLY ELEVATED.
HOWEVER...RECENT TRENDS IN RADAR AND LIGHTNING DATA SUGGEST THIS
ACTIVITY IS SLOWLY INCREASING...POSSIBLY AS HEIGHT FALLS AND ASCENT
ASSOCIATED WITH EJECTING SHORTWAVE TROUGH BEGIN TO OVERTAKE THE WRN
PERIPHERY OF THE WARM SECTOR. IF THESE STORMS CONTINUE TO
DEEPEN...THE THREAT FOR SUPERCELLS AND A STRONG TORNADO WOULD
INCREASE GIVEN THE SIZE OF THE LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS
. SOME OF THIS
CONVECTION WILL LIKELY SPREAD INTO SRN MO AHEAD OF THE LINE.

KXII-TV in Sherman has a reporter on the scene reporting nine dead in Lone Grove, Okla. His source was a nearby police chief on the scene helping in rescue efforts.

Wow, that is just terrible. The number could very well rise as well. :(

Ohio and Georgia seem, just from this map, as possible epicenters of tomorrow's activity.

Do bear in mind that so far, no other news agency is reporting that figure. Hopefully that is an inflated figure that first light will reduce. But the KXII-TV reporter attributed it to a police chief from a nearby community.

KTEN-TV reporting that 46 people have been treated so far for injuries at Ardmore's Mercy Memorial Hospital. Two of those injured were severe enough that they had to be transported to Dallas' Parkland Hospital.

One eyewitness in Lone Grove said the storm tore SW to NE through the eastern part of town and that the damage was "catastrophic."

Another person said her grandfather was "sucked out" of the house and was being treated for injuries at the Ardmore hospital. The grandmother, the woman (seven months pregnant), and her husband came through the storm unscathed but the house was totally destroyed.

KXII-TV is now reporting on its Web site what its reporter in the field reported.

"We've received word of 9 fatalities in Lone Grove, according to Ratliffe Police."

In addition to the KXII-TV report of nine fatalities I referenced earlier, FoxNews.com is now reporting up to eight people killed and 50 injured in the Lone Grove tornado.

So it would seem at this point, that indeed, the Lone Grove twister has been a really violent tornado strike with a sizable death toll. :(

And that's as of 1 a.m. CST - who knows what first light will show in this town of nearly 5,000 people after what has been called a large and violent twister roared through the southern Oklahoma town.

EDIT: KTEN-TV is reporting that "According to Carter County Sheriff Ken Grace, authorities cannot confirm an exact number of fatalities, but Grace believes the death toll could climb over ten."

Woke up this morning and discovered the news is even more grim out of southern Oklahoma - now 15 confirmed deaths in the Lone Grove, Okla. tornado. :(

My prayers go out to everyone affected by this - and for those under the gun today.

The Daily Oklahoman reports the following:

* the LG tornado was perhaps a half-mile wide:
* At least two trailer parks and dozens of homes and businesses were completely destroyed.
* An Oklahoma Highway Patrolman who lives in LG said “There’s nothing left ... twisted metal, cars turned upside down, cars in trees.”
* Search and rescue crews had to suspend operations at 1 a.m. due to the danger from downed power lines and jagged debris
-----
Daily Oklahoman: "About an hour before rescue workers suspended their search, the distraught sheriff said his men were doing all they could to clear areas and look for dozens of missing people — freeing people from debris and wrecked cars and marking bright orange “X”s on areas that had been searched. But Grace said he just didn’t have enough light or man power.

“We’ve had reports of people calling for help in abandoned fields,” the sheriff said. “We’re doing all we can.”

At least two trailer parks, and dozens of homes and businesses were completely destroyed. One deputy sheriff said whole families were lost in one of the trailer parks, and he said he expected more fatalities to be discovered at first light.

“I’m scared to death to see what daylight brings,” the deputy said
."

The squall line line event is expected in my area at around the lunchtime hour with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes being possible. Our temp. is already in the lower 60's with DP readings in the mid 50's. The line is very weak around the Memphis area, but they are expecting it to strengthen up a good bit before it gets here.

Situation Update No. 3
Posted:2009-02-11, 04:31:23 [UTC]
Ref.no.: TO-20090211-20455-USA

Situation Update No. 3
On 2009-02-11 at 11:31:42 [UTC]

Event: Tornado
Location: USA State of Oklahoma Lone Grove

Number of Deads: 15 persons
Number of Injured persons: 14 persons

Situation

With at least 15 confirmed dead after a massive tornado Tuesday evening, Carter County emergency officials were forced to suspend the search for survivors shortly after 1 a.m. until daylight Wednesday. “It’s just too dangerous,” Sheriff Ken Grace said, referring to jagged metal and livewires hidden in rubble and debris. “We don’t need to be adding any more injuries to what we already have.” Sheriff’s officials said this town of about 5,000 people was devastated when a tornado estimated to have been about a half-mile wide tore through the middle of Lone Grove, ripping buildings from their slabs, demolishing dozens of mobile homes and snapping any trees and power lines in its path. “It looks just like any tornado footage you see on TV,” said OHP Trooper Bryant Harris, who lives in Lone Grove. “There’s nothing left ... twisted metal, cars turned upside down, cars in trees.” Harris, who lives just down the road from some of the most hard hit areas, said he and his family rode the storm out in a tornado shelter.

“It really does sound like a freight train coming through,” he said, describing the roar of the devastating storm. About an hour before rescue workers suspended their search, the distraught sheriff said his men were doing all they could to clear areas and look for dozens of missing people — freeing people from debris and wrecked cars and marking bright orange “X”s on areas that had been searched. But Grace said he just didn’t have enough light or man power. “We’ve had reports of people calling for help in abandoned fields,” the sheriff said. “We’re doing all we can.” At least two trailer parks, and dozens of homes and businesses were completely destroyed. One deputy sheriff said whole families were lost in one of the trailer parks, and he said he expected more fatalities to be discovered at first light. “I’m scared to death to see what daylight brings,” the deputy said.

Lone Grove lost it’s only furniture store on state Hwy. 70, and all that was left of the chamber of commerce, next door to John’s Furniture, was a slab and scattered debris. The UPS building, also on Hwy. 70, had part of its roof ripped off, and the town remained without power through the night. For the most part, neighboring Ardmore - a much larger population area - was spared, but sheriff’s officials said an area north of Ardmore, near Springer, was also hit hard, including a private school, Beavers Academy. Grace said rescue workers from all across southern Oklahoma were arriving to help out in the search and recovery efforts and extensive efforts with helicopters and grid searches would begin at first light.

Lone Grove is just up the road from where I live, about an hour away.

Local TV news footage on KXII-TV (sorry, they don't have web streaming) shows what I suspect - to my untrained eye - is EF3-EF4 type of damage.

I didn't see any bare slabs, but there was a report that some homes were "blown off their foundations" and I did see one brick chimney that was broken cleanly away at the foundation. And of course, those are the video pics taken in the dark.

Another report said one of the two trailer parks hit was "completely destroyed."

Now the Daily Oklahoman is explaining their earlier report of 15 dead.

"Eight people are confirmed dead in Carter County but the death toll could rise, according to Carter County Sheriff Ken Grace. Sheriff Grace said Tuesday evening there were 15 people who may have died but that was not confirmed."
