Waiting at Rainbow Bridge

#1 Postby CajunMama » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:42 pm

I just got back from putting one of my pets to sleep. Lucky or Luckydog as we affectionately called her was 19 and soon to be 20. She was a lovable mutt who showed up at our house one day and we welcomed her with open arms and hearts. Shortly after she came to us she had 5 adorable puppies on Christmas Eve morning. She was the most faithful of dogs. Always happy. Just recently she developed a bump on the side of her face. We took her to the vet and her tooth was abscessed. The swelling never went down even with the tooth extraction and heavy antibiotics. I took her back this morning and they discovered a mass with cancerous cells. The vet called me and told me and i knew what we had to do. My entire family surrounded her as she fell asleep for the last time. Night Luckydog....

awww CM soooooooo sorry, i know what its like to lose a pet. But wow, at 19, you were gifted to have your pet as long as you did, and the opposite was true too.
May you have peace and comfort knowing that you did the right thing for your pet today :( Though sad it was, it was for the better.
Nighty night Lucky.

Boy do I know what you are going through! The Rainbow Bridge poem makes me bawl everytime I read it, but the person who wrote it was a genius. It is so filled with hope and love and you can actually picture the day when Luckydog and you are reunited.

It just doesn't seem right that your pet only lives an average of 10 - 20 years; that they die before you. It's like seeing your child die and a part of you dies with them.

Rest in peace Luckydog. You have many friends to play with over Rainbow Bridge.

I'm sorry for your loss, CajunMama. Luckydog was blessed to have you and your family share your lives with her, just as you all were blessed to have Luckydog share her life with you.

I'm so sorry, Frick. :( I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet. It's very difficult and you truly grieve. My heart goes out to you and your family. Lucky isn't in any pain now... may she rest in peace.

Oh Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear this. You gave Lucky a wonderful home! Always remember that.......thinking of you all. Pets truly become full fledged family members. It sounds to me like you made Lucky a full fledged family member, for many years. I know it's little comfort right now but you gave a "lovable mutt who showed up at our house one day" a wonderful place to call home.

Been there, done that, makes me bawl my eyes out every time. Kathy, I can't add anything to what has been said above but prayers for comfort for you and your family as you grieve your loss.

Kathy - I've been thinking about you and your family ever since reading this topic, when I talk with my dog, pet her and when I just think back to life without a dog. It was empty! It is just so nice that you were able to have Lucky for as long as you did. I looked into my dog's eyes and told her she has to live as long as Lucky did. What a wonderful home you gave her - please cherish all of the wonderful memories you have of her. I'm just so sad for you all.......hugs coming.

Luckydog was just a good ol' mutt and she was such a sweetie. She would dance for her dinner. Not on two legs but she would kinda hop around and prance. She was doing this up until a few weeks ago when her wound wouldn't heal.

What's funny is we had another mutt that looked almost exactly like her. Peanut was male and died a few months before luckydog showed up. How odd is that?

Next on my list of things to do for my pets is cataract surgery for my 7 year old poodle. Buster developed cataracts from his diabetes. I've gotten really good at giving him his insulin which i have to give twice a day.

This was taken last April. You can see how old she is here but i don't think she looks as old as she was.

Cajun - I truly believe that Lucky was a reincarnation of Peanut. My cat, Mac, came along a few months after another outdoor cat, Sox had to be put down due to feline leukemia and HIV. We wanted to bring him indoors with my two other cats, but the vet said that our other cats could get the diseases. Mac, who is orange, versus Sox which was black and white, came a long a few months later. I always felt he was a "healthier" version of Sox.

Our dog, Rudy, was born two weeks after Marty's other dog, Pete, passed away from cancer. They look a lot alike.

Lucky looked like a real sweetie pie.

I picked up Lucky's ashes today. I don't know what we're going to do with them yet but she's home again.

Kathy - awww, that's difficult I know. Take your time deciding what to do with her ashes. Perhaps you could split them, keep half in a container/urn and the other half sprinkle on her favorite outdoor spot (shady spot in your yard or her favorite tree/fence post, etc. at the park), holding a family memorial as you scatter the ashes. I know the day you're facing will be so sad for our family. Our dog is like our third daughter to us. I talk to this dog ALL day long. Right now she's hanging out with my husband while he gets ready for work, otherwise she'd be at my feet right now as I type. She is usually glued to one of us.

Meant to thank you for posting Lucky's picture on a previous post. What a cutie she was. She'll always be in your heart Kathy. Remember that.

I lost my pet of 12-1/2 years last week. Zigzag was a rescued dog from an abusive home and he came to us when he was 6 months old. He was a German Shepard/Coyote mix and was a really good dog. I have a tribute to him on my homepage.
