Meteorology Student needs help

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Sun Mar 29, 2009 1:59 pm

Hey everyone,

I need help choosing a school to transfer to with a major in Meteorology. I would like to transfer and finish my BS in Florida, so the three schools I am looking at in the order of most interest to least interest: Florida State, University of Miami, and Florida International University.

1) Florida State University
Pros: Most widely recognized of the three.
-has a Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association
-Large Meteorology program
-close relationship with the NWS another NOAA departments
-Could continue to MS degree
-Could diversify and explore different meteorology careers
-Well defined honors college
-Cheap...er (total of $14,000/year)
-$2,000 PTK scholarship
-Very established student life
Cons: Math based somewhat (not a good math student)
-May not be up to the admissions requirements (because of math and physics)
-Research university. I dont want to be a tool, and I would rather be in the field, and in the public eye.

2) University of Miami
Pros: small, but established Met Program
-more admissions friendly
-$16,000 PTK scholarship (of the 50G+ cost of attendance)
Cons: not too well known
-Expensive!
-No very known student organizations
-no active PTK/Phi Beta Kappa chapters (that I am aware of)
Comments: Small school, private

3) Florida International University
Pros: Medium sized school
-Already have a two-year full ride scholarship
-Already have automatic entrance into the Honors College
-Well established Honors College
-Somewhat less expensive (~$16,00/year)
-Possible $2000 scholarship
-NHC VERY close
Cons: Developing MET program, still diverging from geology
-Not much development for the MET program

If anyone has any relationship to any of these colleges, please give me your story and recommendation. I know I am not the only one on S2k pondering this thought, so you could be helping numerous people by responding. This is a life decision, and will change my life, so I need a lot of help making it. Any tips anyone has will be greatly appreciated!!!

THANK YOU!

Hey fact... this is just based on what you have written here, but to me either FSU or Univ. of Miami seem like much better options. You might find a way to talk to some of the met. majors from each school and get their perspective on why their school is the best. Good luck!!!

FSU, no question about it. In FIU I'm now taking a class called Intro to Hydrogeology. I feel like a fish out of water. Very unhappy. I am still in FIU because I live with my parents a block away, liberality.

My preference is FSU, hands down.

I made this topic for everyone to get some help. I know I am not the only MET student on here in FL, so I hope to help everyone.

Sandy...I was hoping to see your response. Thanks for the input! Will you be leaving FIU anytime soon? I'll be leaving my parents when I leave SPC (Spring semester 2010) if all goes as planned. Going to be very interesting. Completely new book of life when it happens.

vbhoutex...Already responded.

For undergraduate, FSU hands down.

If you want to go on to graduate school, you might want to look at Rosensteil School at UM.

Western Kentucky is where I am planning on attending and they just started the meteorology degree in 07'. But I like the small school atmosphere. If I wanted to go to a bigger, more established meteorology school. I'd pick Mississippi State. But if I had my choices down to FIU, FSU, or Miami...I'd go with Florida State.
