The only place in central florida with significant winter weather
is my freezer, which can make quite a bit of ice...Which
is nice and cool for those summer days when the heat
index soars well into the triple digits...Still 55*F at this
hour...that's the coldest it has gotten since yesterday's
low 80s (that's what it felt like with the humidity, before
the sea breeze really cranked up about midday)

Re: Deep South Snow/Winterwx thread
Well I crashed at 12 when the snow had mostly ended and then slept til 7!!!!!! Gah! I did not intend to sleep THAT long. I'd say about half the snow has melted but there's still a good bit out there. I'm disappointed I did not get more pictures but oh well, I'm happy. Looking forward to some quiet weather(3 days straight of tornadoes and snow) and 70's by the end of the week. As far as I'm concerned winter can be over now.

I guess winter ain't over. Forecast low of 35 here on the Coast Tuesday morning. Looks like I'll have to drag the plants back in as there is a frost potential. Got sunburnt at the Keesler airshow today....MGC

Last night my forecast for Monday night/Tuesday morning was 35° - NOW look at it!
Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 32. North wind between 5 and 15 mph.
Your forecast low has probably dropped as well. A likely freeze here on April 7th... wow!

Re: Deep South Snow/Winterwx thread
We had a nasty freeze on Easter 2007 which was extremely devastating because March had been VERY warm, lots of 80 degree days which meant everything was blooming(this year it won't be quite so bad because outside of a few days March was rather cool). The freeze hit and killed a lot of it, and that was also when the worst drought in history started which made matters worse(and some places in Georgia are just now fully recovering from that).
Latest forecast:
Monday...Breezy...cooler...cloudy. Highs around 50. Northwest winds 10 to 25 mph.
Monday Night...Colder. Mostly cloudy. Chance of flurries. Lows in the mid 20s. West winds 5 to 15 mph.
Tuesday...Partly sunny. Chance of flurries in the morning. Highs in the upper 40s. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph.
Tuesday Night...Clear. Lows in the mid 20s.

We're preparing for 29F Monday night. Our gardens are in jeopardy. The vegetable garden is full blown....gonna be a lot of covering. Hundreds of plants. We don't plan to start until we actually see temps dropping in a southeast direction. All the stuff we need is in place.
It makes life interesting.

I believe that traditionally, it's not considered fully "safe" to plant / set out for vegetable gardens until after Easter, at least in central Mississippi. There isn't ALWAYS a freeze, but the term "Easter cold snap" exists for a reason.

But Easter can fall anytime during a four week period...

Re: Deep South Snow/Winterwx thread
The problem with the Easter thing is Easter isn't a set date...there can be I believe as much as 5 weeks difference to when it occurs...so that really doesn't work too well to use it as a milestone for planting....

Around here they say don't plant starts until after "Good Friday".
We're about 25% covered right now.....using everything we have from buckets to poly to paper sacks. Leaving a lot of vegetables unprotected. Out of resources, not much more we can do.... We're forecast for 32F right now between 3 AM and sunrise. Currently at 57F.

We are expected to fall into the low-mid 20s here in OKC by the morning. The record low for tomorrow in OKC (27F) will likely be broken.
Actual low this morning at Will Rogers = 27F (a tie of the record)

Re: Deep South Snow/Winterwx thread
Sunrise 37.6F...........a lot of prep for nothing. We've dropped almost 40 degrees since Sunday at sunset. NO FROST. Our forecast changed frequently from NWS. At one time we expected 28F.
EDIT: Upon further investigation.....it did not freeze anywhere in Mississippi last night. The entire state with the exception of several coastal counties was under a freeze warning.
