Thank you so much! Can you believe the electricity never shorted out? Guess that's the only silver lining we got out of this storm. The Cy Fair VFD was running rescue boats out here, and I saw them at the end of our street (we're on a cul-de-sac) and they NEVER came down our street! Our neighbor across the street had 2 feet of water in his home and luckily he has a small loft where he could move his wife and 2 small daughters. They were trapped there for 5 hours. Dustin called 911 repeatedly asking for water rescue to get his family out of the house, and.... nothing. They also would not take pets, so most people stayed put. We would have happily hopped in a boat, but not without our dogs and birds.

Did we not learn this lesson from Katrina? If authorities don't make arrangements for pets, people won't leave. Period. End of story.

Jen, I am so sorry to hear about the flooding at your home. I cannot even imagine it, and yesterday was getting too close to comfort for us....

You will be in our thoughts and prayers for sure!

Jen, thoughts are with you from up here in Indiana also and hate to hear about the flooding.

We take pets & people up here to get them to safety nowdays but I know what you are talking about with people saying no to leaving them behind and staying with them. We changed our rules a couple years go to do everything we can to get someone to safety including taking pets with them. I know first hand what it's like to leave one behind and that won't happen again as long as I have something to say about it.

Anyway my thoughts are with you and wish you well...Dave

Jen, I'm sorry to hear about your flooding. Been there done that with 6" in my new house back in '93. Like with you, the rain came down so hard and so fast there was nowhere for it to drain. With the amount of rain you had i don't think any drainage system could have handled it.

Do y'all have flood insurance for the home? We didn't but thankfully we were able to get help from fema. Keep immaculate records of what you spend to preserve what you have. We draped our carpet over the fence, had it professionally cleaned and used it for probably another 8 years. Had to replace the padding though. Get all your sheetrock cut out and get some commercial dehumidifiers to draw the moisture out of the wood. Leave the walls open as long as you can.

Good luck to you and dave. I can really sympathize what y'all are going through. Have you heard from yankeegirl? Doesn't she live near you?

I'm so sorry, Jen. We all felt helpless as we watched the radar and you guys kept getting pounded. That is a LOT of rain in such a short time. I'll keep you guys in my prayers.

Hi everyone. I've been so fried and exhausted I haven't been able to check in at all. Good news: we're actually OVER insured, if that's possible. We've got flood insurance at $200K for the structure and $100K for contents. One little silver lining. I'll take it where I can get it. We're listing and pricing every last thing down to the t-shirts and underwear. If I get .50 for a pair of panties, I'll take it!

Dave and I and the dogs all have diarrhea, likely from having to swim next door in the raw sewage and gasoline in the water. Sewage backed up in our bathtubs and overflowed in the house - along with the rest of the neighborhood. You can imagine the state of our pool...

Yesterday Pastor Burt Palmer from my church (Bear Creek UMC) showed up with a regular armada of volunteers. I am blown away with the hours of hard labor they all did. Got the rest of the carpet pulled out and cleared away enough junk to at least have a pathway through the house, and hit everything accessible with the shop vac as well.

My sister came over and packed up the clean pieces of antique Haviland and early Nippon china I collect. It was a massive job and needed to be done before we could even think about getting the china cabinet out the door. I still have to handwash and pack away a gazillion pieces in the bottom - a job that will take several hours.

The restoration crew showed up at 7:00 p.m. and ripped out the sheetrock and insulation, got the blowers and dehumidifiers going. I am shocked at the amount of water pouring out of those things. I am even more shocked at the rate the electric meter is spinning. These huge dehumidifiers pull so much current they keep blowing breakers right and left. Didn't get to bed until 1:00 am, and back at it at 8:00 this morning.

Got my Mom's car towed finally. The idiot insurance agent told Mom it should be fine and to go ahead and start it. Nope. Water blew out the tailpipe and that was the end of that. He also said that steam cleaning would be fine for the carpet. Uh, hello! There was raw sewage in the water! No way is steam cleaning going to get all that out. The SOB....

My brother-in-law Mike, bless him, took a half day off work and went to town clearing out the entire detached, 3-car garage. He brought along his pressure washer and cleaned the whole floor, moved the extra fridge to the street, and generally was a savior. We can move nothing out of this house without the garage being both clean and cleared out. Now we're mentally gearing up for the major work of photographing and documenting every last little thing. The adjuster is coming tomorrow, thank God. Many people still have not had a lick of work done or even heard from an insurance adjuster yet, so in that we are also blessed.

Keep an eye out in the Houston Chronicle in the next few days. I am being interviewed tomorrow at 10:00 am for a feature on the Bear Creek Flood. I can hardly wait to get into the details of why this area has slowly gone under water for the past 5 years. Everyone I've talked to is ready for a class action suit against Harris County and the Corps of Engineering idiots. The county continues to issue building permits in our watershed (for the tax revenues) and the Corps refuses to dredge the drainways and Addicks Reservoirs - all of which have heavily silted up over the years. Environmentalists have blocked all dredging in the reservoir for an endangered WEED. The Texas Prairie Dawn flower grows only in the reservoir, therefore we must sacrifice people, property and millions of dollars for a weed.

I'll report back as I can. Thanks so much for all the kind words. :-)

God help me. A 50% chance of rain tomorrow and we still haven't pulled all of the furniture out of the house yet. With Addicks Reservoir full to bursting, even a 2" thunderstorm could bring more devastation to Bear Creek. I'm in the freakin Twilight Zone...

Yes, we dodged a bullet this morning. I did hear that a squall line may set up when the front goes through later. Wouldn't surprise me if it stalls right over us.

Here's a link to the pics of our flood event. The water got a couple inches higher than shown in the pics because we were literally swimming to slightly higher ground with the dogs. I still can't believe it.

Before heading to the ballpark this afternoon for the rest of a tournament that started yesterday, I checked radar. It looked like the worst was a little north of here and also moving off to the east. There was one little red cell that I thought may or may not affect us, but it wasn't all that big. Anyway, the game was called after less than an hour of playing due to flash flooding, not to mention a lot of thunder and lightning. Crazy heavy rain that just wouldn't end. Talking to someone on the phone who was looking at radar, it always looked like it was about to end, but kept redeveloping just to the west. At first, there was water streaming around the concrete portion we were on. Before long, that went underwater as well. It was pretty nuts, but all the kids there (aside from one little darling princess baby who was petrified) didn't seem to mind the storms that much, though some were a little distraught at their field underwater.

When it finally let up enough to leave, we waded out of the ballpark in several inches of water. Whew... what a mess! One of those adventures the kids won't soon forget, though.

Finally some good news. No, make that GREAT NEWS! I went to church this morning to get away from the war zone and recharge my batteries. The outpouring of support was just incredible. A wonderful member (may she be forever blessed!) is bringing over her 36 foot travel trailer and leaving it with us until we can move back in the house. Thank you God! Now we have a clean, non-hazardous place to sleep. It is such a godsend that I burst into tears and nearly had hysterics in front of everyone. Dave nearly did the same thing when I told him. Even better, he said, "That's it. I'm going to that church." I've been after him for years and he's crawfished every time. No more. :-)

How do you ever thank someone for such a selfless gift? This entire week we have been very humbled to receive so much assistance, and many times from complete strangers. Just having a clean, dry place to retire to at the end of our 15+ hour days is a huge blessing.

One of our neighbors who did not get water in the house cooked dinner for everyone in the area who wanted to come and eat. People were in and out for quite some time, and it was yet another blessing to be able to get away from the devastation for a short time. That's the first time we've felt even a little relaxed in a week.

It's going to be a slow slog, but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel. Obviously everyone's prayers are being heard. Thank you all so much for following the story. :D

I had some experience at my wife's cousin's house and ger grandparents after Allison, and there is nothing less fun than tearing up soaked and ruined carpets and padding.

No rain for a few days, looks like.

A pretty solid cap in place, per LCH sounding. Not exactly a cap of forged steel, more like a cap of Iron Age metal, a little weaker, but not likely to break.

Cold front could be the hammer, except it appears to be slow moving and well North of here, from the Arklatex to Waco.
