How often does this happen?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

How often does this happen?

#1 Postby neospaceblue » Tue May 05, 2009 8:34 am

How often do storms get a T-number of higher than 7.5? I've only seen one storm reach 8.0 (Monica). Have there been any in the Atlantic and East Pacific? I really want to know.

I don't think Katrina even reached 7.0.

According to Karl Hoarau, who is IMNSHO, probably the pre-eminent satellite analyst on the planet when it comes to using the ODT...

STY Gay (8.7)
STY Angela (8.5)
STY Yuri (8.3+)
STY Tip (8.2)

http://ams.confex.com/ams/pdfpapers/75465.pdf

And these are just for starters. I suspect there are several more WPAC STYs that fit the bill. I can think of Ivan, Joan, and Paka from 1997, Mike from 1990, and Maemi from 2003. I'll defer to Steve (Aslkahuna) when it comes to additional info about WPAC storms, since he is much more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.

I'm sure there are other SHEM cyclones (Gonu?) that probably peaked in the 7.5+ range as well.

------
edit: In the Australia/South Pacific basins, it looks like Zoe (2002), Susan (1998), and Aivu (1989) all reached T7.5 . From what I can tell so far, Gonu peaked out between 7.0 and 7.5 . http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp ... nu_adt.gif though I've yet to find the actual CIs from TAFB/SAB/AFGWC. EPAC Hurricane Linda peaked out at 8.0 and may have been a tad higher.
------

For the ATLC, I'll look up Allen, Gilbert, Mitch, and Wilma to see if I can find any info on their maximum satellite-derived intensities.

So much for trusting posts on other forums... I had a gut feeling it was never that high.

About the twins Ivan and Joan, T is 8.0 according to the Navy. And they say that before them, "Since 1995, the highest
DD number computed for a typhoon by the DD algorithm on the satellite image processing
equipment at JTWC was T8.3 for Super Typhoon Angela (29W) (1995), as it approached the
Philippines."
