Pixar outdoes itself (again)

#1 Postby Squarethecircle » Sat May 30, 2009 1:12 pm

Up (2009):

Last year, Wall-E was considered by many to be the year's best film. Indeed, there was a significant amount of uproar when Wall-E, as well as The Wrestler and The Dark Knight, were not honored with a Best Picture Oscar nomination. This year, Pixar released a new movie with the interesting quality of being their first movie in which only humans could truly "speak" and things happen (with a bit of imagination, of course) as they would in the real world. I will not speak for anyone personally, but in my opinion, Pixar has triumphed over their previous work. The amount of sheer emotional depth in this movie is astounding, as is the attention paid to detail and the inside-jokes (like boy scouts and snipe hunts, and a very clever reference to this hilarious video, though I should say that the latter has been cut down so that the part referenced in the movie is no longer in any Youtube video). The visuals are a Pixar best, and the characters are believable, well-acted, and extraordinarily well-written. There is poignancy in this film which is hard to find in any movie released these days. Like Wall-E, the first part of this film is beyond simply fantastic, but unlike that film Up carries its magnificence through the funny scenes, and the action scenes, and those scenes which are designed for kids. This is simply the best film of the year by a wide margin, and I doubt that another release will be able to match it.

Everyone should see this movie. Take the kids (who will love it even if they can't appreciate the best parts), or watch it alone. It doesn't matter if one is 10 months old or 10 decades, they owe it to themselves to see the greatest movie Pixar has ever made.

(Again, I would like to make it clear that this is all subjective, and obviously I think that it's perfectly fine if you didn't find it as terrific as I did, though I feel sorry for anyone who wasn't able to enjoy it.)

The Critics: RottenTomatoes reports that 98% of all critics have given the movie a positive review. My own count from that site yields about 50 or so 100% (or perfect) reviews, and the average rating (8.6/10) is the highest I have ever seen from a new release. Also, the only three critics that have so far given it negative reviews have rather dubious track records when it comes to appreciating well-reviewed movies. The review-aggregator Metacritic has reported a score of 89, equivalent to universal acclaim, with most critics' reviews of that site being scored by Metacritic as 100% (or perfect) reviews.

I could probably re-watch all the Disney Pixar classics and still fully enjoy them. Can't wait to see this one.

My favorite movie this summer is Land of the Lost. It was hilarious!
