Heavy Squall Line Strikes Central China, 27 dead.

June 3 04UTC-21UTC, the Chinese provinces of Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Shandong, Jiangsu was struck by heavy thunderstorm, hailstorm and strong wind, From 07 to 15 UTC of June 3, the Cities of Zhengzhou, Kaifeng and Shangqiu of Henan province was afected by a strong squall line and it spread to the northwestern part of Anhui province as well as the Shandong's city of Heze. 27 people were reported died (Henan 24, Anhui 3) with a loss of 2.212 billion yuan.

In Shangqiu City, 16 were are reported dead, 133 injured, 26411 houses damaged or completely destroyed.

Meanwhile, Bozhou City of Anhui Province was struck by strong winds and hailstorm, hail fall lasted for 34 minutes and heavy hail fall lasted for 20 minutes. Hurricane force gusts of 11 bft persisted for half an hour (0150-0220 UTC)




In the day 6 of June, Xinxiang City of Henan province was struck by minimal TS wind with the rainfall of 60mm/1 hour.

Heavy rainfall and Hailstorm struck Southern part of Jiangsu Province

A weak frontal system encountered hot environment thus triggered strong convection in the southern part of Jiangsu Province on 4 of June, thunderstorm and hailstorm were generated in Jiangsu's cities of Xuzhou, Suqian and Huai'an, where a yellow alert of thunderstorm was announced. A maximum 50mm of rain occurred in the suburban area of Xuzhou City.

In the southern part of Jiangsu, the city of Changzhou received 50mm of rain in an hour, at the same time, hailstorm occurred with the maximum diameter of 2 centimetres.

Meanwhile, heavy hailstorm struck the Ningqiang County of Shaanxi Province and caused significant agricultural loss. The maximum diameter of hail was as big as 5 centimeters. 7974 houses were damaged with 1 person injured.

Severe weather afected Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai, 9 dead

June 5... The southern part of Shandong Province as well as Anhui province and northern part of Jiangsu were heavily struck by severe weather, causing 9 deaths.

In Shanghai, heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and hailstorm occurred simultaneously in the morning, Baoshan District reported a wind speed of 15.2m/s, after the heavy rain, hails fell on the ground with diameter from 1 centimetres to a maximum of 2.5 centimetres.

7 dead in Southern Sichuan severe rainfall

During the time 13UTC-18UTC of June 6, Heavy rainfall spread over the Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan province. Abundant moisture enhanced the severe activity. The most severe rainfall arrived at 1509 UTC, In Leibo county, rainfall reached over 25 millimetres in only 20 minutes, and the neighbor county of Zhaojue had a more than 10 millimetre of rainfall in 3 minutes.

That rainfall triggered a flashflood which caused 6 deaths, additionally, in Yuexi County, one man was stricken to death by thunder.

Guizhou province: Severe weather leads to flashflood, 4 dead

On June 7, the northern and central part of Guizhou Province are covered by strong rainstorms, the Zunyi Municipal Zone received the most rainfall, with the counties of Wuchuan, Zheng'an, Daozhen and Xishui. The maximum recorded rainfall is 84.4 millimetres. In Daozhen county, heavy rainstorm triggered flashflood and killed 4 people and more than 200 cattles. 669 houses were damaged with 30 of them completely destroyed. Direct economic loss reached 30 million yuan.

Provincial Institute of Meteorology forecasts that the rainfall will persist during the next 24 hours and local strong thunderstorms and hailstorms are possible.

Torrential rain spread over Hunan Province, 2 dead 2 missing

From 00 UTC of June 8 to 00 UTC of June 9, 205 cities and townships of the northern and western part of Hunan province were struck by heavy rainstorm, 13 of which reached 100 milimetres of rainfall. Suining County of Shaoyang City Zone reached 240 millimetres of rain in 14 hours and caused 2 deaths and 2 missing, the water as high as one metre entered some houses, most of the electric poles fell down. In Shimen County, Changde City, 120 houses were completely damaged.

The rain of the northern part is forecast to ease the next day, however, rainfall will increase in Southern part of the province with strong thunderstorms possible. In this part of the province heavy rain will persist until at least the day 12.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in Guangxi Autonomous Region, 1 missing

From June 9 to June 10, 77 counties (cities, districts) were struck by heavy rainfall aand thunderstorm. In Hemu township of Rongshui County, the rainfall reached 301.2mm in only 20 hours. This raining process is considered as the strongest of 2009 by now.

358 houses are completely destroyed with 1 person missing. eight schools cancelled daily educational activities.

The rainy condition in Guangxi are forecast to persist until the day 13.

Heavy rainy condition unexpected by the forecast, 1 dead

69.8mm of rain fell from the dark sky with hails in Jiaohe County of Jilin Province in less than two hours' time, triggering flashflood and causing 1 death.

3390 hectares of crop belonging to 9 villages were affected by the heavy rainstorm with 150 hectares completely destroyed.

The local institute of meteorology failed to forecast the arrival of the rainstorm, mainly because the radar cannot cover the damaged town due to the mountainous terrain.

Rain and hail fell in Liaoning's Dandong City




June 10..Torrential rain fell in the City of Dandong Province with the record of 72mm in only a single hour and numerous 0.5cm-diameter hails. The coverage of the torrential rain zone was small and no agricultural damage was reported.

Severe rainfall and thunderstorm occurs in Guangdong Province

June 11.. Guangdong Province was struck once again by very heavy rainfall. In Boluo County (Huizhou City), 102.1mm of rain was recorded in only 3 hours. At 04UTC in only an hour the rainfall reached 49.1mm. At 02UTC, Zengcheng recorded 34.6mm rainfall in an hour, at 06UTC such kind of torrential hourly rain was also recorded in Wuhua District of Guangzhou (63.6mm/h) and Fengshun (47mm/h)

During the period of 0000 UTC to 0330 UTC, 1923 lightning strikes were recorded in Guangzhou City and 2035 in Huizhou City.

According to the forecast, this situation may persist for two days. However, as the torrential rain area is staying mainly along the coast, low risk of flooding along the Pearl River is expected.

Chongqing: Strongest rainfall so far in 2009, 5,261 thunders recorded

June 7.. Chongqing City as well as her subordinated 9 counties/districts and 172 townships was struck by heavy rainfall that lasted for several hours. Rainfall in Rongchang County reached 91.6mm in 12 hours. 170 houses were damaged with 27 of them completely destroyed.

Meanwhile, in the urban area, from 1600 UTC June 7 to 0200 hours UTC of June 8, 5,261 thunders were recorded, tthe thunders appeared more from 1700 to 1900 with the number of 2,119 times. Fortunately, no significant damage was reported by the thunderstorm.

Beijing: 2 dead of Great Wall thunder strike

June 13... Some showers occurred in parts of Beijing municipality with thunder, Shijiaying village received a rainfall of 28mm in a few hours. Additionally, a thunder-strike accident took place at the Great Wall at 4pm Beijing Time, leading to 2 deaths and 1 injury.

Heavy squall line strikes Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu. 22 dead, 187 injured.

June 14... From the afternoon to around 11pm at night, parts of Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu provinces was struck by heavy rainfall, tropical storm (hurricane) force winds as well as heavy hailstorms. In Anhui, 137 villages/townships were damaged by winds of 8-9 beaufort or more, the maximum wind speed was recorded at Tianchang County (31.2m/s, 11 beaufort), hail fell in Mengcheng, Si Xian, Mingguang and Wuhe Counties.

The strong storm caused 22 deaths (Anhui 14, Jiangsu 8), 187 injured with the economic loss of 450 million yuan.

In Jiangsu Province, heavy thunderstorm, hailstorm and temporary strong rainfall occurred from the noon of June 14, the maximum wind was recorded at Jintan City (29m/s, 11 beaufort), hail fell in Tongzhou County, with maximum diameter of 6 centimetres. In the evening, TS wind blew over Jiangsu's capital Nanjing City and the temperature fell 10 degrees centigrade in an hour.

The maximum rainfall was recorded in Danyang City, 57.4mm with a record of 42.1mm in one hour.

Strong rainfall occurs in various parts of China.

En June 18, rainstorm took place in Heihe County, Heilongjiang Province, a school was swallowed by flashflood but no deaths reported as the evacuation was effective (image)



En June 19 (GMT: 2300 UTC of June 18), several locals recorded strong rainfalls. In Botou County, Hebei, it rained a 102.3mm in 3 hours. At 2300 UTC of 18, the county of Ningqiang in Shaanxi Province recorded a 48.6mm of rain in an hour. Cangxi County of Sichuan recorded a 49.9mm at the same hour.

Jiashan: 96.7mm rain in just one hour

On the 21st of June, several locals were struck by short-time heavy rainfalls. The most extreme rainfalls were recorded at:

Guangzhou: Severe rainfall causes 1 death

The rainfall started at 0600 BJT in Pingyuan County, Guangdong Province and lasted till approximately 1400 hours. The county capital receives 413.5mm rain in eight hours and its townships also receive rainfall more than 100mm. One man failed to evacuate himself on time and died soon.

Jiangxi Province: 30 cities and counties affected by heavy rainfall, 2 dead

From the 22nd to 23rd of June, large parts of Jiangxi Province was affected by heavy locally rain. In the counties of Ruijin and Xunwu, flashflood and mudslide occurred. 2 deaths was reported (1 in Xingzi County and 1 in Xunwu County) meanwhile in Dexing City 1 person was struck by thunder and stunned for an hour.

The most impressive rainfalls were recorded at Xunwu County (95.3mm/3h) and Yanshan County (56mm/h). More than 300 houses were completely destroyed in various counties.

The heavy rain is forecast to continue in the next 48 hours.
