Re: RECORD HIGHS JUNE 2009
Record Highs Mon Jun 15 2009
Honolulu HI 92F (8th consecutive day of record highs)
*i dont think ive ever seen one location ever get so many record highs consecutively, this is an amazing stretch.*
NEWS REPORT
For construction crews, the record heat this month is not just something you deal with but something you battle.
“It's been pretty nasty,” said Sol Jacobs, one of dozens of workers putting the finishing touches Monday on the Ala Wai Gardens, a new apartment complex on Namahana Street in Waikiki.
Jacobs, a supervisor with landscaping company Ultimate Innovations Inc. is constantly on the lookout for signs of heat stroke, which includes nausea, vomiting, dizziness and muscle cramps.
“We always take a lot of breaks during the day and make sure everybody drinks water,” said Jacobs. “Some of the workers they nearly pass out because of the heat.”
In the first fifteen days of the month the temperature at Honolulu International Airport has either tied or broken a previous record high. The 92 degrees registered at the airport Monday was yet another record, breaking the previous one of 90 degrees all the way back in 1982.
"We're only a couple of degrees over the record highs but certainly that's all it takes,” said National Weather Service forecaster Derek Wroe. Monday’s high temperature at the airport was the eighth day in a row a record has been tied or broken.
Wroe told Khon2 the heat is the result of high pressure parked about 500 miles farther to the south in the Pacific Ocean than what’s normal this time of year. The closer high pressure moves to the state, the weaker tradewinds become.
“They're not quite strong enough to bring in some cooler tradewind air,” Wroe said of Hawaii’s prevailing current, “but they’re also not weak enough for the sea breezes to take over. So this would be the time when you see the hottest temperatures around the airport.”
The unusual weather pattern is not affecting all parts of the state equally. Wroe notes that while temperatures on the Windward side may feel about average for June, areas of Leeward Oahu are a lot hotter.
“These conditions are favorable for reaching high temperatures at the airport, but that doesn't mean that you're going to see these types of temperatures everywhere,” he said.
The Weather Service expects temperatures to drop later this week when tradewinds pick up to more brisk levels. That would be a welcome relief to Jacobs and his fellow workers.
“Any bit of wind will help us,” he said.
