Millions of people use some type of Social Media platform that either sends updates on the fly to cell phones, PDA’s, email and becomes extremely viral within hours if it’s a important topic. I love S2K, but it reaches people that are already are aware of a hurricanes developing, or weather situation from the great group professionals and enthusiasts on the board that enjoy tracking cyclones. S2K is great on educating on a storm threat with up to the minute on a storm, but it’s focused toward the educated weather community.
The questions was
“Which is Better For Hurricanes: Social Media / Forums?” It all depends for what? Post storm information, a storm threat, tracking? It was never really specified in the question for what outside of just tracking. Sure the NHC /NWS sites are the best for hurricane information, but they are not Social Media / forums like the question asked. If it’s to get information out to the mass population in a short time fast about a threat, I say social media today. If you want more detailed information and to analyze a storm / threat, then forums like Storm2k are great. Social media in some topics surpasses TV media today…. And things that go viral set the pace of TV news programming sometimes now. A lot of TV news networks get their leads from Social Media trends.
I guess it all depends on what type of information your trying to get out about a hurricane, and when.
