All of us cat people know that our cats do not just become friends with all humans. How did this kid get to all these cats? Something seems awry?

Didn't Jeffery Dalmer start out killing animals? Look what he turned into. If the allegations are true than this man may be a threat to humans a few years in the future. He needs to be put away.....MGC

I have poultry and other small livestock that these stray animals prey upon. I have no problems with pets but people need to be much more responsible with their pets and not allow them to roam free. I have a dog and he stays in the house or in our fenced yard. So any stray that wanders up will be shot if I get the chance.
JMHO,

While I understand the need to protect your livestock, maybe sometimes they're not strays but just got out of the house. You shoot every cat or dog that wanders on your property? Nothing personal, but I wouldn't want to be your neighbor.
I agree 100%.

I think he did and I believe that his case was the first to highlight the connection between animal cruelty and murder.

Which is what spawns my opinion of him being charged with murder.

I agree he is on a path to do this to humans but you can't charge someone for something they didn't do.Category 5 wrote:Stephanie wrote:MGC wrote:Didn't Jeffery Dalmer start out killing animals? Sadly you're right, they can't charge him with it, which is why the definition of "murder" in our justice system should be slightly altered. That OR animal cruelty penalties need to be MUCH more severe.

IMO although what he did was very cruel and uncaring, it does not rise to the level of murder. If that were the case, what should we do with those who work in slaughterhouses and food processing plants, daily killing countless innocent pigs, cows, chickens and other livestock? Should such animals be rated any lower than cats and dogs just because most of us don't consider them to be pets?angelwing wrote:I would put it on the same level as murder also! If someone can do this to a cat, what's not to say he'd do that to a human???? He needs a very severe lesson!
I love cats just as much as - and perhaps more than - the average Joe. We've had several and it still hurts every time I remember how one of them that I was particularly fond of, died many years ago. (The neighbor's dogs mercilessly attacked and killed it when it strayed into their yard one too many times. We miss you, Skippy

I agree that the perpetrator needs to be taught a lesson but I find there is way too much of the "Lock 'em up and throw away the key!" mentality nowadays, with a high priority on punishment and little emphasis on rehabilitation. If lengthy sentences are so effective (and I know you never said he should go to jail but others in the thread have), why is the level of recidivism so high for all manner of offenses? Yes, some jail time is probably in order but more importantly, the perp needs to make meaningful restitution directly to those whose cats he killed. He should also be made to undergo psychiatric evaluation and receive counseling. He needs to be helped and steered away from becoming another Ted Bundy.

Peta is now trying to use this incident to remove animal dissections from schools.

As long as they are not of animals in danger of extinctions, I personally don't have problems with dissecting animals for science. I didn't like to do it in biology but it was an experience that I will never forget.

I think PETA is mostly crazy, but I didn't dissect anything in school. There's no way I could have done that. I don't think government schools should force you to do it, either. At the very least, it should be an option. There are other ways to learn body parts and how they work.

PETA are lunatics, they take things to the extreme, but however they have made things much more humane for animal companions.

At my schools (middle school in Va, and then high school in NC) you didnt have to dissect the animals if you couldnt handle it. Instead, you could go dissect it on the computer (virtual computer program online, I dont remember the name of it though) and then write a report on what you learned.

The term serial killer came because of Ted Bundy. He is truly an evil person.
