You're a good neighbor... that was really nice of you. But how did he survive in Southeast Texas all these years without an air conditioner?

I can't even imagine!

The older you get the more heat causes problems. Also now days he is taking some medication, that seems to be making it worse.

Harris County enacts Burn Ban and some fireworks...

Harris County enacts burn ban

Harris County Commissioners Court today enacted a burn ban for unincorporated areas of the county, reacting to a recommendation from the fire marshal who has seen an uptick in the number of grass fires.

“I am really concerned about how dry it is,” Fire Marshall Mike Montgomery said.

Commissioners Court this morning unanimously approved the burn ban that would last for up to 90 days. Also Wednesday: County Judge Ed Emmett issued a ban on the sale of some fireworks — "all stick rockets and missiles with fins" — because of the fire risk.
The latter ban applies not just to sales of the fireworks but also to using or moving them, Emmett said. It starts at midnight Wednesday and lasts until noon Friday, and it could be extended by Gov. Rick Perry. Emmett said he has contacted the governor about the ban.

Dozens of fireworks vendors appeared before Commissioners Court asking the county not to ban the sale of fireworks, which many said they rely on for their livelihoods.

Emmett said his chief concern is public safety and that he will announce his decision later today.

“We need to make the most sense,” he said. “In a drought condition we should not be doing anything that would start a fire.”

If Emmett decides to declare a disaster emergency and ban some fireworks, Gov. Rick Perry has 60 hours to approve his action

Here is an interesting article posted on the DMN weather blog...

Apparently the summer of 1980 nearly melted the entire city of Dallas!

I hope we don't get a summer like that this year. :sun:

Gee, it only got to 102ºf today at the house. Official at the airport was 101ºf a new record for the date and the same or higher is expected for the next three days with a respite possibly back to only 99ºf.

Burn ban issued here too but no word on fireworks yet. Surely they'll have to ban them. We've got a 9.30" rainfall deficit and it's only getting worse. Just a side note...a week or so ago the maintenance men that work at the high school right by my house were burning brush. They're not supposed to. It's illegal within the city limits.

State fire marshal bans private burning
Order issued because of dry conditions

June 23, 2009

The State Fire Marshal's Office has issued a cease and desist order for all private burning effective at 4 p.m. today because of dry conditions throughout the state.

Private burning will be allowed only with the permission of the local fire department or local government, said Fire Marshal Butch Browning.

I hope we don't get a summer like that this year. :sun:

Showing my age here (lol) I lived in Dallas that summer. Black vinyl car interior, non running a/c, had to drive on LBJ every afternoon cooking all the way. My car's fan belt melted and stretched - it was that hot. It was too hot to go swimming - the public pools were warm. That was gross. People were buying blocks of ice to put into private pools.

I never want to see that ever again.

We hit 99 today but I heard thunder! There was a small cell south of me early this evening but with it being the only cloud in the sky I knew not to get any hopes up. Tomorrow will be day 21 of no rain at my house. Seems like we have a better chance (maybe 20%) of getting a shower tomorrow but it looks pretty dismal for the rest of the week. GFS really wants to break down the ridge by early next week/start of July and I sure hope it comes to fruition. If it doesn't and the heat and drought worsen I fear we are in for a horrific summer. It's already horrific for me because I hate anything over 90 :). In a normal year by the time we reach the upper 80's to low 90's afternoon storms fire up to cool everything down. The heat/drought feedback keeps getting worse and I'm afraid of what's to come given that June is SUPPOSED to be our wettest month.

Morning e-mail from Jeff Lindner...

Record heat expected again today after KIAH shattered the record of 99 yesterday with 101. Today also marks the 31st day at IAH without rainfall sitting a new longest streak without rainfall in the last 3 decades. Records that are falling were set back in the incredibly hot summer of 1980.

Center of the upper ridge continues to shift westward and SE TX is getting dangerously close to the eastern side “ring of fire” convective track. Storms that developed yesterday over AR and N LA attempted to move toward deep east TX. With the ridge shifting ever so slightly, convection will get closer and closer each day and I would not rule out a few storms this afternoon across our NE counties and then along and N of I-10 on Thursday in line with the NAM 12 and 4km WRF. Even with that…highs will still top out in the low 100’s prior to the onset of any storms. Expect records to fall again today and possibly on Thursday at KAIH and KHOU.

Slow pattern shift continues into the weekend as stout ridge shifts westward and weakens allowing SE TX to come under deeper NE flow aloft and a slightly better (20%) chance of rain. Seabreeze may also be able to generate rainfall as deep layer subsidence under the ridge finally abates. With cooling the in the 850 and 700mb levels afternoon highs will top out in the mid to upper 90’s instead of low 100’s by Saturday and Sunday.

Wetter pattern really looks to set up by July 1-2 as deep easterly or southeasterly flow develops and TX comes under the mercy of westward moving tropical waves. Moisture levels should respond…with PWS reaching into the 2.0 inch range during this time supporting more widespread shower/storm development along the seabreeze.

Effective yesterday Harris County instituted a 90 day burn ban on all outdoor buring along with a complete ban on all aeriel fireworks. Burn Bans are in effect for: Harris, Liberty, Galveston, Madison, Matagorda, Colorado, and Calhoun counties in SE TX.

Yeah, but will they recognize it. I am POSITIVE folks in my part of the world will shoot the aeriel fireworks. There are three stands within 1 mile of me. I am telling you, they will.

Yikes....starting to break the 1980 records. Here on the Miss Coast, we've hit 100 the past two days at Gulfport Airport. We are at 97 as of noon. Observed some towering cumulus out over the Gulf earlier but they have since evaporated....MGC

Same here. Burn ban in Travis County, fireworks are always illegal in Austin and we still get idiots with fireworks and bottle rockets. I always run the sprinklers on all my legal days before July 4 and then try to remember to turn them on to run for a while on July 4 at dusk - not because we are trying to keep the grass and weeds green but to try to keep them from going up in flames if a rocket lands in the yard...

My outdoor temp is currently reading 103F (in the shade of course)

I've got to get the sprinkler going again after work. The door from our kitchen to our garage is just a touch 'sticky', and I'm a little nervous this is the first sign of compaction of the smectitic soils under our house.
