The Last VW Beetle

#1 Postby Southernmost Weather » Wed Jul 30, 2003 6:42 pm

It's an end of an era. VW has ended production of the original Beetle. That was one great mode of transportation--easy to maintain, great gas mileage and just plain fun to drive. I owned two Beetles over the years and would love to get another one. Here's the link to the AP story:

I just heard the VW Bug ending production in the last five minutes on the "FOX Report with Shephard Smith" -- what a coincidence with timing. :D

My gosh!! I did not even know they still made them!! Talk about shock and awe!! I learned how to drive a stick-shift in a VW Bug named Blackie.

I took my driver's test on a yellow Beetle Bug - a semi-automatic I might add. Borrowed it from my brother's girlfriend at the time. My dad had an Elcamino (sp?), manual on the column. I could not get the hang of that car/truck!!! So my brother stepped in and said borrow the bug. Only thing was, if I went over 35 MPH I had to switch gears! I did not go over 35 in that driving test, no way was I doing that!

Ironically I've owned 5 speeds for at least 20 years now!!! Wouldn't drive anything else.

End of an era.....sort of sad. That engine sound......freezing in them in winter.....

Truly a sad day.......I too, over the years have owned 2 Bugs and one VW Square Back Sedan (1969), drove that little booger for EONS, between my parents and myself, we put over 400,000 miles on it and it's STILL around today!
