Heard this on BBC last night, theories still in their infancy but could be interesting. Basically while El Nino (Eastern Pacific warming) inhibits north Atlantic hurricane activity central Pacific warming aids it. So what if the two are combined?

We've been talking about it in another thread, the warming in the central Pacific but not in the Eastern Pacific is called by some people "El Niño Modoki" or pseudo-Niño, I don't know what could happen if the warming occurs in both.

El Niño Modoki is supposed to have happened in 2004, that's why activity was not suppressed in the Atlantic during August and Sepember, though I'm not sure if that was the only reason.
