A few prayers please

#1 Postby vbhoutex » Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:42 pm

My mother has apparently had a small stroke and is in the hospital in Fort Walton. She sounds good and seems to be in good shape and at this point the doctor says it is not life threatening and probably not life altering. However, the MRI detected other embolli(clots) in her rt. carotid artery(if I heard the doctor right) and they do not know where they are coming from. I am leaving in the morning for Fort Walton and will be with her at least through Monday depending on the situation.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother. My father has had two strokes, the second being just last week. He has thankfully recovered fully from both. But they can be scary things. I hope evrything turns out alright.

Prayers for your Mom - and please say one for me too (foot and leg muscle spasms since mid-week)...

Being over 50 is scary at times - so many things can "break" at any moment, but the best we can do is to live our life the best we can until God says it's over...

Thanks for the prayers!! They are always helpful!! Mom did have a small stroke, but at this point a full recovery is expected. She is doing well, but obviously scared, imo. Probably will get the rest of test results tomorrow. I will update as I know more.

Prayers going out for your Mom. I bet that the Dr. will subscribe blood thinning medicines to dissolve the clots. That is what they did for my aunt who had a clot like that.

I'm so glad about the positive prognosis, vbhoutex because as soon as I read your post (just a few moments ago) it brought back memories of my own Mom's stroke that occurred just over a year ago. Unfortunately, hers was a far more serious type where a major vessel in the back of her head ruptured (hemorrhagic stroke) and she died within 48 hours. We were close and I miss her terribly and I dream about her practically every night. They're always pleasant dreams, though: No nightmares or anything like that.

Besides medications, perhaps your Mom might consider altering her diet somewhat? This is not to suggest that her condition was caused by her eating habits because sometimes no matter how much we try to take care of ourselves, something untoward pops up.

It is my fervent hope and prayer that your Mom continues along the road to recovery and that she has a full and blessed life ahead. During my regular personal recitations of the short but powerful Doxology, I will keep your Mom in mind.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to throw in, for good measure, the following variation on a well known Irish blessing

May the sun always shine on her window pane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near her.
May God fill her heart with gladness to cheer her.

God Bless you both.

Abajan, I am so sorry to hear if your loss. I know it hurts terribly!!

Mom had a thrombotic stroke as opposed to a hemmoraghic one and for that we are highly thankful since as you well know hemmoraghic strokes ae often fatal or cause massive irreparable damage.
The doctor is changing mom's diet and she will be taking plavix for the rest of here life. He is adjusting a few of her other meds as well. She is fortunate to have some very good doctors that do genuinely care for her as a person/friend also. She'll have a rehab consult tomorrow to see if she needs any rehab and when she comes home, which I suspect will be tomorrow, the doctor is setting up in home health services to come in and evaluate everything and help set up her condo as necessary for her to continue living here. At this time he see's no need for her to move into an assisted living facility even though I think that could be helpful for her and especially for my peace of mind. We've had some short but frank discussions about the future and she has no doubt where I stand concening it, even though I suspect she might beg to differ at a later date. Those type of issues we will start tackling slowly but surely so we don't have to do it in an emergency type of situation which is what I feared was gong to be the case.
Once again thanks for the support and prayers everyone. They have worked and are working and I am heading home to Houston tomorrow barring any unforeseem changes.

Oh David, how did I miss this. I'm so sorry and I'll be praying for your Mom's quick recovery.

This might help. My Mom had a stroke about 6 years ago. She had some paralysis on her left side. She was 80 years old at the time. She had rehab in the hospital for about a month. We fixed everything in her home, expecially in the bathroom, to make it safer and easier for her. She is on Plavix, Coumadin, and medication for diabetes and high blood pressure. She lives by herself in the home in which I was raised. She just retired, at 86, from her job in the hospital gift shop.

We thought it was near the end when she had her stroke. We found out that these older women can be quite "spunky" and resilient.

Chin up kiddo. ((HUGS))
