I ended up with .78". Not as much as I had hoped for but not bad.

No gauge, but between half an inch and an inch per doppler estimates, which seems about right. Gusty winds before the rain started took a few leaves and twigs off the oak. Not severe, by any means, but a good show of wind, lightning, and thunder.

A man was killed in the storms today. :(
It happened in Vidor, between Beaumont and Orange.

Orange County man dies in weather related accident
July 18, 2009 - 7:16 PM

Orange County Press Release - On Saturday July 18, 2009 at approximately 4:45PM, the Orange County Sheriff's Office received a call of a man that had been struck by a tree limb in North Vidor. On arrival Deputies learned that Willie Clayton Cothern, an 85 year old Vidor resident was arriving at his residence at 165 Hulett St. in Vidor during the height of today's storm. He was the passenger in the vehicle which was being driven by his caretaker. The caretaker pulled the car close to an awning so Mr. Cothern could get out of the car closest to the house due to the heavy rain and high winds. As Mr. Cothern exited the passengers side of the vehicle an extremely large tree limb broke from near the top of a 50-60 foot tree. The limb fell and struck Mr. Cothern in the head causing a large fracture of his skull. Mr. Cothern died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The vehicle and awning were also damaged by the limb. Deputies described the limb as being as "big as a car."

Orange County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Janice Menard responded and pronounced Mr. Cothern deceased at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered and Mr. Cothern was transported to the Jefferson County Morgue. No one else was injured in this incident. The Criminal Investigations Division is conducting the investigation.

A church in Orange was also struck by lightning, causing a fire.

Church in Orange struck by lightening
July 19, 2009 - 12:22 AM

Saturday's storms are being blamed on a church fire in Orange.

Orange County firefighters from all over the county battled a fire at the Old First Baptist Church off I-10 and Highway 62.

The fire broke out at 7:00p.m. Saturday evening.

It's believed the church was struck by lightening during Saturday's severe weather.

All kinds of lightning, thunder, and wind, but just enough rain to make it humid...
I took some pictures, let's see if I can make this work.

That is so sad about the death and the fire. :( It was aweful here this evening.
We too had some limbs down and broken.
Thankfully they were not big and no one was hurt.
This from NWS Lake Charles

STORM TOTAL RAINFALL WAS GENERALLY AROUND 2 INCHES ALONG THE
INTERSTATE 10 CORRIDOR AND SOUTH...WITH POCKETS APPROACHING 6
INCHES. 40 MPH GUSTS WERE COMMON AND RATHER LONG-LIVED...WITH
ISOLATED AREAS 60 PLUS. MUST SAY THAT THIS COMPLEX PRODUCED SOME
IMPRESSIVE AMOUNTS OF CLOUD TO GROUND AND LIGHTNING. ATTEMPTED TO
STICK MY HEAD OUT THE FRONT DOOR FOR A PEAK...BUT RAPIDLY RETURNED
INSIDE AFTER A NEARBY STRIKE.

I am hoping today brings rain!!! The irony is when I was in Beaumont, I used to watch the showers move close then deviate or dispate..Now that I am in The Woodlands I see the same thing here and Beaumont getting tons of rain...Go figure..My brother always said I am my own planet and put out my own heat..Perhaps I have a constant High around me :D

I am enjoying the "mild" temps though and glad to see we have a decent chance for the week to come.

I just checked my rain gauge from yesterday's storms: there was a little over 2 inches in there. :)

Lake Charles NWS finally has someone with a sense of humor writing the forecast discussions.

DID ALSO SEE CONSIDERABLE LIGHTNING
ACTIVITY IN POST-STRATOFORM RAINS...ALWAYS INTERESTING BUT NOT UNUSUAL
WITH THESE TYPE COMPLEXES.

ENJOY THIS PATTERN BECAUSE IT SHOULD KEEP TEMPERATURES NEAR NORMAL WHICH WE
HAVE NOT SEEN THAT MUCH THIS SUMMER. THE DROUGHT SHOULD EASE SOME OVER THIS
PACKAGE AS WELL AS RAINS BEGIN TO ACCUMULATE ACROSS THE REGION. THE RAINS ARE
WELCOME AT THIS POINT SINCE TREE ROOTS ARE GETTING HIGH ENOUGH TO TRIP ON.

Oh my. My uncle and I were standing outside in the rain at his house in Garland when it suddenly began hailing marble sizes, and the wind began to pick up dramatically. We barely got underneath the porch overhang when the winds started HOWLING, leaves and twigs and white spray of rain were whipping across the street horizontally, there was a huge crack that sounded like lightning but instead I saw the neighbor's tree across the street twist 360 degrees before the top half of it fell on the lawn. I stood pressed against the wall and watched this windstorm for another 30 seconds or so and then I realized that half the tree limbs on the block were down. My uncle's house (which I'm inside) now has half a pecan tree resting on the roof. The spot we were standing in a moment earlier is covered with huge branches.

There was no Severe Thunderstorm Warning at the time.

Now that I look at the radar it looks like we experienced a downburst.

Seems like most of the development is to the East again today. Hopefully those storms from the North will make it this way.

Mowed and weed-whacked. T-storm headed for Harris County hasn't poofed yet, but it still has time.

Yeseterday's half to one inch of rain was most welcome, but we need more.

marble sized hail is a nice treat, but only room in the garage for the minivan, and I forget the deductible on the homeowners insurance. Any bigger ice cubes than marble is unwanted.
