AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
912 PM AST SUN JUL 19 2009

.UPDATE...RAIN HAS CLEARED OFF OF THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO...BUT
SHOWERS REFORMED OVER SAINT CROIX AND TO THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST
OF THE ISLAND. THESE SHOWERS WILL LIKELY CONTINUE MOVING WEST
NORTHWEST ACROSS THE CARIBBEAN...AND MOVE ONTO THE EAST AND SOUTH
COASTS OF PUERTO RICO LATER IN THE EVENING. EXPECT ISOLATED
SHOWERS FOR MUCH OF THE REST OF THE NIGHT OVER THE U.S. VIRGIN
ISLANDS. MORE MOISTURE IS HEADED FOR THE AREA MONDAY ACCORDING TO
GFS AND NAM. WINDS HAVE INCREASED AT LOWER LEVELS. 30 KNOT WINDS
WERE FOUND IN THE 00Z SOUNDING FROM 3 TO 13 THOUSAND FEET. SIMILAR WINDS
FROM ALMOST THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION WERE NOTED FROM 35 TO 50
THOUSAND FEET.

&&

.DISCUSSION...THE ATMOSPHERE REMAINS CONVECTIVELY UNSTABLE FROM
850 - 550 MB AND ANY HEATING OF LOWER LEVELS WILL RE-IGNITE
CONVECTION. CURRENTLY MODELS SHOW DRIER AIR MOVING INTO THE AREA
AS OF 03Z WITH MOISTURE RETURNING 12-15Z. RADAR SUGGESTS THAT THIS
IS LIKELY TRUE...SO HAVE LOWERED POPS FOR THE REST OF THE
NIGHT...BUT RAINFALL IS STILL LIKELY ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA
TOMORROW. FORTUNATELY WINDS SPEEDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE HIGH SO
THAT SHOWERS WILL MOVE QUICKLY ACROSS THE AREA WITHOUT MUCH THREAT
OF FLOODING...MUCH AS HAPPENED TODAY.

&&

.AVIATION...
MOSTLY VFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MOST OF THE
LOCAL TAF SITES UNTIL 20/1000Z. PASSING SHOWERS COULD AFFECT THE
LOCAL REGION WITH A FEW AFFECTING THE TERMINALS OF TIST AND TISX
THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS...GENERATING BRIEF MVFR CONDITIONS ACROSS
THESE TERMINALS.

Barbados' official forecast for today and tonight states: Cloudy to overcast with some moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. However, seeing how 97L's convection is flaring, my own unofficial forecast is: Cloudy to overcast with frequent moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds.

Right now it's almost overcast with just a little bit of blue sky peeping through and winds are almost calm. Already there have been some showers overnight and this morning. Just within the last 15 minutes or so, there have been some distant peals of thunder.

WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
411 AM AST MON JUL 20 2009

THE NWS DOPPLER RADAR DETECTED SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS MAINLY ACROSS THE COASTAL WATERS OVERNIGHT
AND EARLY IN THE MORNING. FEW OF THESE SHOWERS MOVED INLAND ACROSS
ST THOMAS...ST JOHN AND ST CROIX BUT DUE TO THE RAPID MOVEMENT OF
THESE SHOWERS...THE TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS WERE GENERALLY MINIMAL.
THE WINDS WERE MOSTLY FROM THE EAST SOUTHEAST AT AROUND 10 MPH WITH
GUSTY WINDS NEAR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AND THE LOCAL TEMPERATURES
EARLY IN THE MORNING RANGED FROM THE UPPER 70S TO THE LOWER 80S.

THE OVERNIGHT AND EARLY MORNING SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY
WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BACK EDGE OF A TROPICAL WAVE...LOCATED
ACROSS WESTERN HISPANIOLA EARLY THIS MORNING. LIMITED SHOWER
ACTIVITY WILL PREVAIL OVER THE LOCAL ISLANDS DURING THE REST OF
THE MORNING HOURS. HOWEVER...THE LINGERING MOISTURE LEFT BEHIND
THE TROPICAL WAVE IN COMBINATION WITH DAYTIME HEATING AND LOCAL
ISLANDS EFFECTS WILL INDUCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCATTERED SHOWERS
AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS MAINLY ACROSS THE WATERS SURROUNDING
THE LOCAL ISLANDS THIS AFTERNOON. MOISTURE IS EXPECTED TO
INCREASE AGAIN LATE TONIGHT AND TUESDAY...AS NEXT TROPICAL WAVE...
ALONG 56 WEST THIS MORNING...PASSES ACROSS OR JUST SOUTH OF THE
REGION...RESULTING IN ADDITIONAL UNSETTLED CONDITIONS...WITH A
GOOD DEAL OF CLOUDINESS...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

ACROSS THE REGIONAL WATERS...MODERATE TO FRESH EAST TO SOUTHEAST
WINDS WILL CONTINUE WITH HIGHER GUSTS NEAR SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE
OFFSHORE ATLANTIC WATERS. SMALL CRAFT ARE URGED TO EXERCISE CAUTION
ACROSS THE REST OF THE LOCAL COASTAL WATERS EXCEPT ACROSS THE
NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN PUERTO RICO.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
319 AM AST MON JUL 20 2009

.DISCUSSION...
SURFACE ANTICYCLONE ACROSS THE WESTERN ATLANTIC CONTINUES TO SHOW
VERY LITTLE POSITION VARIABILITY AND REMAINS FIRMLY ANCHORED FOR
THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. THIS...COUPLED WITH A SURFACE CYCLONE NEAR
PANAMA...WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN SURFACE EAST-SOUTHEASTERLY
FLOW ACROSS THE AREA. DUE TO THIS FLOW...THE GFS FORECAST
SOLUTIONS TAP MOISTURE FROM THE ITCZ FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS
WHILE ANOTHER TROPICAL WAVE IS FORECAST TO REACH THE WINDWARD
ISLANDS BY LATE MONDAY. THE DEEP BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE AS PER
MIMIC-TPW TECHNIQUES AND THE 20/0000Z TJSJ SOUNDING INDICATE
PLENTY OF AVAILABLE MOISTURE FOR CONTINUED CONVECTION WITH TYPICAL
NOCTURNAL ACTIVITY THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. UPSTREAM SOUNDINGS
/MACM-ST. MAARTEN AND MKPB-BARBADOS/ INDICATE THAT DRIER MID-LEVEL
AIR SHOULD BE ADVECTING INTO THE REGION ON MONDAY. THIS SHOULD
LIKELY RESULT IN TYPICAL DIURNAL AFTERNOON CONVECTION ACROSS
CENTRAL PUERTO RICO. HOWEVER AS THE TROPICAL WAVE APPROACHES FROM
THE EAST-SOUTHEAST...EXPECT PRECIPITATION TO ONCE AGAIN INCREASE
IN AREAL COVERAGE ACROSS THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND EASTERN PUERTO
RICO BY LATE AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING.

AS THIS NEW TROPICAL WAVE ADVANCES...IT HAS BECOME DISORGANIZED AS
UPPER-LEVEL WINDS BECOME LESS FAVORABLE FOR TROPICAL CYCLONE
DEVELOPMENT. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IN
MIAMI...THERE REMAINS A LOW CHANCE /LESS THAN 30 PERCENT/ OF THIS
SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE WITHIN THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
REGARDLESS OF CYCLONE FORMATION...ANOTHER ROUND OF TROPICAL RAINS
AND LOCALIZED GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS WAVE AS IT
ADVANCES TOWARD THE AREA.

BY WEDNESDAY...LINGERING EFFECTS FROM THE WAVE SHOULD STILL BE
EVIDENT ACROSS THE REGION...WITH MOST PRECIPITATION OCCURRING IN
THE PREFERRED WINDWARD/LEEWARD REGIONS...HOWEVER PRECIPITATION
CHANCES WILL BEGIN TO DIMINISH IN AREAL COVERAGE. AFTERWARDS...THE
REST OF THE WORK WEEK AND WEEKEND LOOK FAIRLY DECENT...WITH
TYPICAL NOCTURNAL/DIURNAL MESOSCALE EFFECTS DRIVING THE WEATHER.

WHILE ANOTHER TROPICAL WAVE IS CURRENTLY LOCATED OUT IN THE
CENTRAL TROPICAL ATLANTIC...IT IS TOO EARLY TO FORECAST ITS EXACT
LOCATION FOR LATER IN THE WEEKEND/NEXT WEEK. AT THE PRESENT TIME...IT
APPEARS THE WAVE STAYS SOUTH OF THE ISLANDS.

&&

.AVIATION...
BRIEF PERIODS OF MVFR CONDITIONS IN PASSING SHRA WITH GUSTY WINDS
ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS TIST...TISX...TJSJ AND TJPS UNTIL 20/0900Z.
MOSTLY VFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE REST OF THE LOCAL
TAF SITES DURING THE REST OF THE MORNING HOURS AND ACROSS THE
AFOREMENTIONED TAF SITES AFTER 20/0900Z. AFTER 20/1700Z AND UNTIL
AT LEAST 20/2200Z...AREAS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH
MOUNTAIN OBSCURATIONS WILL DEVELOP ACROSS INTERIOR AND WESTERN
PUERTO RICO AFFECTING TJMZ AND TJBQ WITH PERIODS OF MVFR CONDITIONS.

&&

.PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
SJU 86 79 86 79 / 60 40 60 40
STT 89 80 88 79 / 70 50 50 50

Good morning to all the Caribbean friends. It looks like 97L will cause some bad weather for some of the islands today but no much stronger than what it is now.Its a cloudy morning here with little sun as high clouds are overhead.

Hi good morning Cycloneye, our pro mets said that we could pass in yellow alert at anytime today for a risk of showers added to tstorms. A new deterioration should concern us beginning this afternoon with numerous showers locally tstorms. Tomorrow wet weather conditions are prevailing, and for the sea waves up to 3meters to 3m50 are possible. As usual we wait and see...
From the weather station of Raizet: at 5am the weather cloudy, wind from East 6 kts, 26°C

Overcast here, but the radar looks pretty good for us so I'm going to chance it and go in to open the cart (for those who don't know, my business is world gifts and hot sauce sold from a kiosko in town, so weather makes a BIG difference in my every day, let alone storms!).

There isn't much wind either. I'm waiting for the newest weather report, which makes things sound better than yesterday's did!
