NYC on Track for the 2nd Coolest July on Record

#1 Postby southerngale » Fri Jul 24, 2009 9:19 am

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
444 AM EDT FRI JUL 24 2009

...UNUSUALLY COOL JULY FOR CENTRAL PARK...

FOR SOME PERSPECTIVE...HERE ARE THE TOP TEN COOLEST JULYS ON RECORD
SINCE 1869 FOR CENTRAL PARK IN NEW YORK CITY:

COOLEST
AVG. TEMP. YEAR
70.7 1888
71.9 1884
72.1 1914
72.3 2000/1871
72.4 1891
72.6 1895
72.8 1902/1869
72.9 1956
73.1 1890
73.2 2001

DUE TO THE UNUSUALLY COOL CONDITIONS THUS FAR IN JULY...HERE ARE
SOME INTERESTING FACTS TO NOTE...

WITH AN AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE OF 71.6...CURRENTLY RUNNING 4.7
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL...THIS JULY IS ON TRACK FOR THE 2ND COOLEST
ON RECORD. BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES HAVE OCCURRED ON 21 OUT OF
23 DAYS...WITH THE OTHER TWO DAYS BEING NORMAL. THERE HAVE BEEN
ZERO ABOVE NORMAL DAYS.

CENTRAL PARK HAS ONLY REACHED 85 DEGREES ONCE THIS MONTH...ON THE
17TH...AND HAS NOT YET REACHED 90 DEGREES THIS SUMMER. IF THIS
CONTINUES THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH...IT WILL ONLY BE THE
SECOND TIME SINCE 1869 THAT 90 DEGREES WAS NOT REACHED IN JUNE OR
JULY. THE ONLY OTHER TIME THIS OCCURRED WAS 1996.

I just finished a job in the NYC metro area....I found the cooler temps to be very pleasant. Myself and the boss broke away one day and went out to Montauk (on the end of the island)....we tried some ocean swimming.....forget it....it's cold water in the North Atlantic. :cold:

We only hit 90 once since the beginning of June and today we may make a run for it again. It has been absolutely WONDERFUL and I'm sure the Philadelphia has a record in the making for July as well. Today I put my air on only for the second time this season.

lol - that's what I was thinking. Yeah, all that. lol I moved in here in November. I think mine has been on since then.

Ok, I'm exaggerating a little. It did go off some during the winter, and I even had to run the heat sometimes. But for many months, except when it cycles off for a little while (and one time when I had a problem with it), it's been ON. I think I'd be dead, otherwise.
It's MISERABLE down here without A/C. I couldn't live without it. Literally. Image

Have you not hit the 80's much either, Steph? I can't imagine the A/C only coming on a few times and it's the end of July!

Actually, we've been in the low, maybe mid 80's this month. What has been missing is the humidity which is the main reason why we put the air on. We've had it on 2 days in a row now   Today is a classic July summer day - mid to upper 80's and dewpoints and humidity 60 %/degrees and above. I KNOW we haven't seen anything yet.

Starting to get humid today up here, its 86 right now and humid here in Philly, at home it's 83 right now and humid. We're not used to it, had to turn the AC on in the car for the first time, by now we should be sweltering and used to this.

The AC at home has been on since April for the hubby's medical problems, so couldn't benefit from that.

Kinda glad I tunred down the job offer I got to go to Texas, I wouldn't be able to stand it!

It's almost as if each season is getting a late start this year, with the exception to the 90 degree days in April. It's just been strange.

Yep, it's summer now. Muggy, afternoon thunderstorms and the AC is on non-stop.
