Last week's storms in S. Jersey and My Brother's House

#1 Postby Stephanie » Sun Jul 27, 2003 7:19 pm

I spoke with my Mother this morning and she told me that my brother's house up in Florence, NJ (Burlington County) was STRUCK BY LIGHTNING! :o

Fortunately, no substantial damage nor fire, but apparently my brother Daren and his wife, Karen were home at the time of the storm. They heard a loud bang and commented to themselves that "it sounded pretty close". Little did they know until later on that a lightning bolt struck the roof and created a 6" hole. They had gone outside later and noticed some roofing shingles lying on the ground. As they were taking it all in, one of their neighbors walked over and thanked them "for taking one for the neighborhood! " Their computers didn't get fried, and they only had to replace their cordless phone and of course repair the whole in the roof and replace the shingles. They live in a development that is only a few years old. It was once farmland (of course  ) and there aren't that many trees around.

Thankfully there wasn't any serious damage...and I'm glad that the damage that was done is fixed now. :)

So am I! It's one of those things that you always read about but it never affects "you".

Ah Steph...been there, done that! My family and I were in our home when it was struck by lightning. Fortunately the electricity had just gone out but it struck about 10 feet from me and my husband. All I got out of it was PVC plumbing...the old plumbing was copper. The house smelled like someone lit 1000's of matches.

I'm glad there was no major damage to your brothers home and he and his wife are okay.

I had to check my drawers!! lol

No, it really seemed as if God was really watching us. I remember seeing the sparks come out of the electrical sockets. And my dear husband hollers, "Run to the hallway!" and I hollered back, "It was not a *%^**(&^ tornado, that was lightning, get the kids and let's get the heck out of here!" The reason we got new plumbing is the electrical current put pin holes throughout the copper plumbing.

We grabbed the kids and the pets and ran out of the house. Met up with some sheriff deputies at the corner store and they insisted on going back to the house to make sure nothing was smoldering.

While the deputies were checking the house out, I walked into the living area to go to the bedroom to get some clothes (I was in my pj's & robe) and there was like an invisible wall not letting me get to my bedroom. I mean I physically could not get past that point.

Another thing I learned from that was have a reputable insurance company like State Farm, Allstate etc. It was our first house and our real estate agent thought he was saving us money by having us get our insurance through this one company. Well, needless to say, all we got on the weekend was an answering machine and when we got our check to fix the damage it wasn't a check but a draft and I had to pay $50 to be able to deposit/cash the draft.

An invisible wall? Was it from the electrical current from the lightning itself?

BTDT on the lightning CM!!! My wife and I were visiting in FL and were at a friends house when a storm came through. I don't remember why we were in the laundry area, probably to watch the storm through the sliding glass doors. Anyways, the lightning was intense and all around and then KABLAM!!!! it hit!!! Watching that bolt go through the air between us and out the door from the electrical socket in the wall opposite the door was a TOTAL FREAKOUT!!! To say the least we both screamed and cussed and checked our drawers!!! There was no apparent damage to the house and I never did hear whether he lost any of the appliances or electronics in the house. THAT WAS WAY TOO CLOSE FOR ME!!! Especially, since I remember when my mom told me my dad was in the hospital in another city because he had been next to an electrical or telephone pole that had been hit by lightning. He and the other man it affected both recovered fine, but that was frightening thought and brought forth visions of fried dad!!

I hope you have a boat ready, Steph...not to mention that "coppertop" is not going to like this.

The projections I've seen for the Pine Barrens call for "raine, raine, raine" all through the end of next week.

No Bill, but I can do the backstroke! :o

We've had some decent weather recently, though this week was half & half. I keep saying to myself "Rain is good, Rain is good!".

I hope Coppertop is having a blast! :D
