Re: C/SC TX Weather #1: Ghost of Summer 1980
I've got a new name for South Texas weather: Climate Dysfunction. Defined as ' A climate that ceases to function in a way that supports those ecosystems that evolved to depend on it'. I'm watching the post-oak trees on our farm die out. The ponds can't hold water long enough to support equatic habitat any more like they used to. (They dry out for extended periods of time and only fill up for a short time). Spanish Bearded Moss (needs foggy dewy mornings and higher humidity) is giving way to ball moss (withstands lower humidities). I remember as a kid going to Palmetto State Park and seeing all the Bearded moss hanging from the trees. Now there is only some next to one of the pavillions (only because the park maintains it). All in all, the South Texas scrub habitat is encroaching on the Cross-Timbers habitat we used to have as the Chihuahuan Desert climate expands north. On the bright side, drier clmate means less fire ants and no rotting wood on the farmhouse. I remember as a kid the east side of the farmhouse would be green from algae growing on it, including the screens. I haven't seen that in over 20 years now. South Texas is ground-zero for changing climate and supports the theory that areas close to desert will be affected as drastically as the poles. Its just amazing how many changes I've seen in such a short amount of time.

Not as obvious here, but I have seen dying trees and brown grass and read about dying oaks and mesquite.

I took a look at the forecast data beyond next week and it’s not very encouraging. Long-range data looking out through August 23rd shows high pressure holding in place over Texas through the period, with little overall change in our weather pattern. If the solutions are correct, our current hot and dry pattern could last for at least another couple of weeks.
And many of you may be interested to know that after the second hottest June on record and the hottest July on record, recent data indicates that for Austin, we’re definitely on track for the hottest summer on record. Data through August 25th showed the average temperature to be 88.2 degrees. This is nearly a degree ahead of the closest previous year 1998, where the average temperature through August 5th was 87.3 degrees. 2008 was third with 87.1 degrees, followed by 1980 with 86.4 degrees. This has turned out to be a summer with unprecedented heat.

No relief in sight. All the forecasts I seen for the next 7-10 days are forecasting 99+ ... most are saying 100+...

This summer’s hot temperatures have been nothing short of amazing! I came across more interesting statistics today that put this summer’s crazy heat in perspective. In Austin, the average high temperature so far this summer has been 100.8 degrees, which is the hottest average high temperature ever recorded. Previously through August 9th, the hottest average high temperature was 100.4 degrees back in 1923. The average overall temperature this summer in Austin through August 9th has been 88.3 degrees. This temperature is far and away hotter than second place 2008 when the average temperature through August 9th was 87.2 degrees. This 1.1 degree difference is going to be hard to beat. Unless something changes drastically over the next 3 weeks, this summer will easily end up being the hottest summer ever recorded for Austin and most other locations across Central and South Texas. Sure, summers are usually hot in Central Texas, but not this hot. Try to stay cool.

There goes the purple sage hope . . .
From the Bob Rose blog Aug. 4
Actually, the 7 day forecast is showing a 20% chance from now thru Thursday . . . so maybe the Purple Sage score?!

The Purple Sage are Blooming: For the past couple of days, I’ve noticed the purple sage bushes are blooming here in Austin. As I’ve mentioned before, these particular bushes often bloom about a week to ten days before rain develops around the area. That’s why they’re sometimes referred to as “barometer bushes”. While this is not real science, the bushes do have some pretty good skill. They must be sensing something our forecast models are not seeing at the current time. I’ll be very interested to see what develops in the week to ten day forecast.

Well we got .93 inches of rain - so very happy! Looks like the 7 day has temps just under 100 now.

Appreciated the rain yesterday although it was light ... meanwhile, the last public boat ramp into Lake Travis has been closed due to extreme low water conditions and the effects of the 2-year-plus drought.

Adding insult to injury, the Austin American-Statesman today is reporting that experts say if the drought continues into 2010 ... Barton Springs will run dry by the end of 2010. Yeah, you read that correctly ... no more Barton Springs eternal.

Gah! On top of that, the Austin American Statesman is reporting
Now I understand we're having a drought. But there are many cities nearby that up till today, haven't had ANY water restrictions while we have been on 2x a week since May. I hope they go on some kind of restriction.
More details on the City of Austin’s shifting to more restrictive water rules as the drought wears on:
Businesses and homes will be limited to using sprinklers once a week, instead of the current twice-a-week limits. And the hours in which they can use sprinklers will be further restricted.
The city is hiring 10 to 15 temporary employees to enforce the rules beginning Aug. 24, according to assistant city manager Rudy Garza.
“There will be no warnings,” Mayor Lee Leffingwell said.
Fines begin at $400 and top out at $2,000 depending on the severity of the violation, violation history, and the timeliness with which the violator pays the fine. The ratcheted-up restrictions are a response to the dwindling water supplies in Lakes Travis and Buchanan, the main sources of water for the Austin area. When full, the lakes hold about 2.1 million acre-feet of water. This week they dipped below 900,000 acre-feet.
“This is temporary and hopefully we won’t be in this situation too long,” Garza said.
The outdoor watering schedule that will go into effect Aug. 24:
*
Homes with odd-numbered address water on Saturdays.
*
Even-numbered homes water on Sundays.
*
Odd-numbered businesses and multi-family buildings water on Tuesdays.
*
Even-numbered businesses and multi-family buildings water on Fridays.
*
If you have an automatic sprinkler system, it must run between midnight and 10 a.m. on your designated day.
*
Hose-end sprinklers and soaker hoses can run only before 10 a.m. and/or after 7 p.m.
*
You can water by hand any time on any day.
For more information, visit the city page that details water restrictions.

Thanks. I figured Heatmiser pretty much rules the roost down here. I don't think we'll see Snowmiser's face around here anytime soon

102/100 = 58/47
forecast for the next week seems to be 98-101 every day. I'm thinking Bergstrom will break the 100+ record (currently 50)
I hope we don't beat the 69 100+ at Mabry. It's bad enough that it's the hottest summer ever! We very well could tho.

With slim (at best) rain chances this week, I think we will easily see more 100s.
At what point does one give up the ghost on watering the lawn?
I feel like I'm losing the war.

I feel your pain!!! We aren't anywhere near as bad as you guys and I feel the same way. Watered well a few days ago and the yard looks like it has been parched for weeks.
