Hurricane Andrew TV coverage

#1 Postby HurricaneJoe22 » Fri Aug 14, 2009 5:21 pm

Someone posted some great coverage of Hurricane Andrew from The Weather Channel and South Florida local TV stations WPLG-Ch.10, WTVJ-Ch. 4 and WSVN-Ch. 7....mostly Channel 4, which had Bryan Norcross. He stayed on air for more than 24 hours talking South Florida through the storm.

Here's the first of the 8 parts...all 8 are posted

Bryan Norcross's ability to share invaluable information.....not downplaying the threat, and not hyping it to the point of panic.....is remarkable everytime i watch this footage. He is still the voice of reason in south florida during hurricane threats. If he is concerned about a threat, I (as do many folks) take what he says seriously. He is the voice of reason and comfort, not hype and misinformation. Truly one of the best tv mets out there.

For me the worst Andrew coverage moment came when CNN mistakenly reported that "...the Associated Press is quoted as saying part of the office building that houses the National Hurricane Center has collapsed..."

It was about 4 a.m. when that annoucement was made and I instantly sat up and said something like "What?!?" - some of my old co-workers and good friends were still there, so needless to say I was upset, until a few minutes later when they were able to get Dr. Robert Sheets (former NHC Director) on the phone, and he said that it was the radome (the "white ball" as local residents often referred to it) that had blown off the roof of the 12-story building and fallen into the parking lot (ouch)...

He did say that the building shuddered when a 164 mph gust struck the building and sent the radome airborne - and for a moment he said that everyone feared the building was about to fall (as local engineers had feared for a long time, since that building is very slender but wide), but thankfully God knew it would hold and did...

This stuff is stuff for weather freaks. To see how low the pressure went still brings butterflies to my stomach.

Yeah, I get excited about it, too, but not as much as when I pop in a GGW tape. TMI?
Anywho, I was about 16 and living in north Broward during Andrew, but I remember staying up overnight and watching Bryan Norcross, Tony Segreto and Kelly Craig on Channel 4. Was quite a rush at the time and is fun to watch it again now.
