We've experienced late afternoon rains for two days. Heavy rain.
For about a hour yesterday, I watched flash flood waters rise to within 3 inches of my front doors. The sunroom door (in the back of the house) already had water coming in.....which is at a lower elevation. At one point, we were an island.
It's raining again tonight. The ditches are just beginning to jump. This is the heaviest rain I've ever seen here. We're again under a flash flood warning.
All this moisture coming right out the GOM.
Is this the alternative to active landfalling GOM hurricanes?

Re: SW Mississippi rains.....
The southern rains have just been amazing - the Gulf moisture is just pumping north like
it's going through a pipeline! I checked the radar again a bit ago, and I see that big blob
of moisture you're talking about, and it's heading this way. We've had rain every day for
the past 7 days, totaling just over 8" here. The water that's standing in yards and ditches
is not going down during the rain breaks, now - there's nowhere else for it to go but up!
Stay safe, Dionne, and let's pray that somebody turns off that Gulf faucet soon!!

They say that tropical cyclones act as heat transfers from the tropics to the poles. Without any storms to churn up the oceans the Gulf is at near-record SSTs right now. Could that extra heat energy be fueling these rains?

Re: SW Mississippi rains.....
I got home and saw the 70% chance of heavy rain again and laughed. It's nice out, a few clouds.....although the humidity has been high.
But nothing on radar until about 20 minutes ago.....you can see several lines of pop ups in Louisiana coming this way. No telling?
Yesterday wasn't nearly like the previous day. Our ground is now saturated. Digging foundation holes in the mud.....and then the holes immediately fill with water.
I know one thing.....the garden is loving these rains. Collards and cabbage growing big time.

Everything is starting to mold, too - my allergies are a nightmare, right now! LOL, cough syrup
and a big box of tissues are my friends, yes indeed...
More heavy rain is forecast from Louisiana up into just north of Tennessee for today and
tonight, then a break after the cold front slips through after the weekend - hallelujah!

Re: SW Mississippi rains.....
We have wild mushrooms everywhere....in large clusters. No doubt it is the result of continued rain. Worst part is the lawns need mowed again.
I'll be in NYC next week. I'll return home to tall grass. Oil well!!!!!

Re: SW Mississippi rains.....
I haven't mowed in almost two weeks. Several of the neighbors have tried to mow between
rains and water pooling in their yards, and the result is a mess of clumped wet grass growing
at different heights. So, I took their impatience as a lesson, and I'm waiting on that dry spell
with cool temps first of the week to do it all at one time!
