With ridge of high pressure building this upcoming week, temps will look more like mid-summer than early autumn....lower to mid 90's for the week ahead in south florida!

Per NWS Miami:

NOW FOR THE EXTENDED PERIOD TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, I HOPE YOU
LIKE JULY WEATHER IN OCTOBER BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IT WILL FEEL LIKE.
AS THE ABOVE MENTIONED MID LEVEL TROUGH CONTINUES TO DEEPEN OUT WEST
AND DEVELOPS A CUT OFF LOW IN THE DESERT SOUTHWEST, DEEP LAYER RIDGE
WILL SET UP ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA WITH NEAR RECORD HIGHS IN THE LOWER
TO POSSIBLY MID 90S FOR MUCH OF THE WEEK. THE CHANCES FOR RAIN WILL
ALSO REMAIN BELOW CLIMATOLOGY WITH CONTINUED LACK OF ANY DEEP LAYER
MOISTURE INFLUX.

90's in October...sign me up. I would take hot, humid weather year 'round. For those that don't like it, it is October so Summer lovers will be cut off soon enough. I wonder if el nino will be strong enough to bring us some spicy dry season severe wx episodes instead of our usual sterile, cool and dry air masses. I'm hoping this winter is wetter and warmer than last year's.

Record highs in Miami range from 91 to 93 deg each day this week.....even though the average high is still 87 deg right now. Not unusual in south florida for 4 to 6 deg to be the difference between the average high and the daily record high.

The night time lows this week will be the biggest departure from normal.....average low is 73 deg.....the forecast is 5-9 deg above normal.

No records were set today that I know of, but here are selected Florida locations that made it up into the 90s today:-

Ft Lauderdale Ex. Airport 90F
Pembroke Pines 90F
West Kendall 90F
St Petersburg 90F
Clearwater 90F
Tampa 90F
Sarasota 91F
Punta Gorda 92F

Key West FL never dropped below 80F (but that wasn't a record either (record high min for Oct 4 is 82F in 1995)

The coolest part of the state today: where it rained and rained a lot, Pensacola received 3.32inches of rain (record rain for Oct 4 is 10.45 inches in 1995 in association with Hurricane OPAL) . The high in Pensacola today was 79F which was recorded after nightfall between 7pm and 8pm.

Crestview, with 0.81 inches, also stayed in the 70s today, at 77F for a top temperature.

More widespread 90s across all of Florida Thur Oct 8, 2009.
Several locations reported record high temperatures with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s. In fact, Orlando with a high of 95F tied an October record, but in addition, was the hottest temperature so late in the season.

Miami International saw its 3rd hottest temperature so late in season:

1) October 10 1941 94F
2) October 13 1990 93F
3) October 8 2009 93F **record high

Key West FL also had a record high temperature ...and another record high min, this time of 83F. It was the 4th record high minimum in the last 4 days.

Several locations failed to hit 90F but just barely:-
Destin 87F Pensacola 88F Daytona Beach 88F
and 89F at Cape Canaveral, St Lucie, Ft Pierce, Apalachicola, Panama City, and Ft Lauderdale.

I fell like the Wicked Witch of the West. "I'm melting......" Of course, I am a fat man, not a skinny old lady. But, I do live in South Florida and there is probably a drag queen around here that could help me.

How common is the heat that Miami has seen so far this month? Well as of 10/9/09, Miami (airport) has had 6 days this month at or above 90 degrees. The forecast is for 90+ deg each day between Saturday, 10/10 and Wednesday, 10/14. If that verifies, that would mean there will be 11 days of 90+ deg in October 2009.....and only 14 days into the month!

How unusual is that?

For each full month of October since the year 1948 at MIA (airport),
# of days at or above 90 deg have been:
(in order from most to least)
9 days - 1 year (1986)
8 days - no year
7 days - 1 year (2002)
6 days - 1 year (2006)
5 days - 2 years (1989 & 1990)
4 days - 4 years (1981, 1998, 2003, 2005)
3 days - 4 years (1980, 1988, 1992, 1993)
2 days - 4 years (1978, 1991, 1995, 2007)
1 day - 12 years
0 days - 32 years

Only 9 days into the month, October 2009 is already tied for the 3rd most 90+ deg days in Miami in 60+ years of data with 6 days. By this time next week, October 2009 will likely have set a new record for the most # of 90+ deg days in October in Miami!!!
