A lot has been talked about since the naming of subtropical storms were to begin this year. We got off to a quick start when Subtropical Storm Ana was named in which it acquired enough tropical characteristics to gain full tropical status ...
Since 1968, subtropical storms have been kept and added with the total number of storms in the final best track plots ... so relatively, nothing in the near term. --- Here is a breakdown of Subtropical Storms that didn't make the complete transistion to tropical storm status.
1968 - 1 (winds reached 70 kts/979 mb min. press.)
1969 - 1
1974 - 4
1975 - 1
1976 - 2
1978 - 1
1979 - 1
1981 - 1
1982 - 1 (dumped 7.80" of rain in CHS)
1984 - 1
1992 - 1 (April STS)
1997 - 1
2000 - 1 (October 25-29)
Since 1968, there have been a total of 17 subtropical storms that did not complete the transition to tropical storm status ... or roughly the average number of subtropical storms per year (since 1968) = ½ or an average of 0.5 sub TS a year. Basically an average of 1 Subtropical storm per every 2 years. This doesn't take into account the ones that do make the transition, however.
The percentage of TC's that had their start from subtropical or non-tropical origins that do make the full transition vs. never making it beyond subtropical storm status is relatively low... Had it not been for 1974, the percentage would have been even lower.
What will the naming of subtropical systems do to the avg.?
