Major Nor'easter Forming

#1 Postby Hurritrax » Wed Nov 11, 2009 8:47 am

Major Nor'easter forming that will affect Southern NJ down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. 40-50 MPH winds, 20-25 ft. waves will cause coastal flooding and major beach erosion....

If you live along the coast and are affected, please post your experiences here. This event is going to be one for the record books.

You're not the only one Steph, I'm a little nervous myself, I'm only about an hour from the shore at my day job, but I have to drive over a lot of bridges and the last bad rain, rt 29 flooded out and I was stuck trying to find a different way and it was a mess!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOUNT HOLLY NJ
829 AM EST THU NOV 12 2009

.SYNOPSIS...
A STRONG AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE WAS LOCATED OVER NORTHERN NEW
ENGLAND WHILE THE REMNANTS OF IDA WERE LOCATED OFF THE CAROLINA
COAST. THE DIFFERENCE IN PRESSURE BETWEEN THESE TWO SYSTEMS HAS
CREATED STRONG AND GUSTY NORTHEASTERLY WINDS. WIND SPEEDS ARE
EXPECTED TO INCREASE FURTHER TODAY. RAIN WILL CONTINUE OVER
SOUTHERN AND EASTERN SECTIONS OF THE AREA AND WILL GRADUALLY
EXPAND NORTHWARD THROUGH FRIDAY. A WEAK COLD FRONT WILL CROSS THE
REGION ON SUNDAY, FOLLOWED BY A LARGE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WHICH
IS EXPECTED TO BRING DRY WEATHER FOR THE FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
-- Changed Discussion --STRONG HIGH PRESSURE IS ANCHORED OVER SERN CANADA AND NRN NEW
ENG. THE REMNANTS OF IDA WERE LOCATED OFF THE CAROLINA COAST. THE
PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THESE TWO SYSTEMS WILL CREATE A
STRENGTHENING AND GUSTY NELY WIND WHICH WILL PERSIST OVER THE NEXT
FEW DAYS. THE HIGH WILL ALSO SERVE TO BLOCK ANY SIGNIFICANT MOTION
OF THE LOW, WHICH IN TURN WILL JUST SIT AND SPIN.

RAIN HAS MOVED INTO THE AREA AND IS GENERALLY FROM JUST NORTH OF
THE I-95 CORRIDOR EXTENDING SOUTH AND EAST. THE HEAVIEST AMOUNTS
HAVE BEEN CONFINED TO THE COASTAL AREAS AND SOUTHERN DELAWARE,
WHERE GED HAS REPORTED 1.55 INCHES THROUGH 7AM.

THE GREATEST POPS AND QPF WILL REMAIN OVER SRN AND ERN PORTIONS OF
THE AREA, WITH LITTLE IF ANY PRECIP OVER THE N AND W. AGAIN, A
CHANGE OF 50 MILES CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. PERIODS OF RAIN
ARE EXPECTED THROUGH THE DAY, WITH THE HIGHEST LIKELIHOOD SOUTH
AND E.

LATEST QPF GUID BASICALLY HAS 1 INCH PLUS FROM PHL S AND E, 2
INCHES PLUS OVER SERN NJ, KENT AND SUSSEX COUNTIES IN DE AND AND
THE SERN SHORE OF MD. SOME AMTS GRTR THAN 3 INCHES CAN NOT BE
RULED OUT FOR EXTREME SERN NJ AND SERN DE. 1 HOUR FFG VALUES ARE
WELL OVER 2 INCHES IN MANY AREAS AND APPROACHING 2 INCHES OVER
THE REST. THIS FACT COUPLED WITH THE FACT THAT IT HASN`T RAINED IN
OVER A WEEK AND THE RAIN IS EXPECTED TO FALL OVER A PROLONGED
PERIOD AND NOT BE HEAVY, THEREFORE, I AM NOT EXPECTING ANY
RAINFALL PRODUCED FLOODING ISSUES.

THE STRENGTHENING GRADIENT WILL INCREASE THE WINDS EVEN FURTHER
AND AM NOT PLANNING ON ANY CHANGES TO THE WIND HEADLINES ALREADY IN
PLACE. THE COMBINATION OF THE RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS WILL NOT MAKE
FOR THE MOST PLEASANT CONDITIONS IN WHICH TO BE OUTDOORS,
ESPECIALLY ALONG THE NJ AND DE COASTS.-- End Changed Discussion --

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
SAME SONG, DIFFERENT VERSE THROUGH FRIDAY. HOWEVER, IT DOES APPEAR THAT
AS THE AFOREMENTIONED HIGH TO THE NORTH WEAKENS A BIT AND SLIDES
TO THE EAST, THERE COULD BE MORE OF A NORTHWARD PROGRESSION OF THE
RAIN. IT DOES APPEAR THAT THE BEST CHCS OF RAIN OVER THE ENTIRE
CWA MAY BE FRIDAY INTO FRIDAY NIGHT. THE MODELS HAVE BEEN HINTING
AT THIS SCENARIO FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THE POTENTIAL FLY IN THE
OINTMENT THOUGH IS HOW QUICKLY THE HIGH TO THE N GIVES WAY. THESE
SYSTEMS OFTEN TEND NOT TO TOSS IN THE TOWEL AS QUICKLY AS PROGGED
AND IF THE HIGH REMAINS IN PLACE LONGER THAN THE PRECIP WOULD NOT
BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AS FAR N. THEREFORE, THE NRN EXTENT CONTINUES
TO BE A LOW CONFIDENCE FCST. IF LATEST GUID IS CORRECT, THE PRECIP
MAY START TO WIND DOWN BY LATER SATURDAY. THE STRONG NELY WINDS
WILL CONTINUE, BUT WILL GRADUALLY BEGIN TO DIMINISH ON SATURDAY.
AS FOR TEMPERATURES, GUIDANCE WAS IN DECENT AGREEMENT AND WE DID
NOT DEVIATE MUCH FROM THEM.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
THE THE PERSISTENT COASTAL LOW TO THE SOUTH AND STRONG HIGH
PRESSURE TO THE NORTH BOTH BEGIN TO LOSE THEIR GRIP ON THE AREA
BEGINNING SATURDAY NIGHT. WHILE THERE ARE STILL SOME LINGERING
POPS, THINGS SHOULD START TO IMPROVE DURING THE EXTENDD PERIOD. BY
SUNDAY, A WEAK AND MOISTURE STARVED CDFNT WILL CROSS MAINLY
NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE AREA AND THEN A VERY EXPANSIVE HIGH
PRESSURE SYSTEM BUILDS IN FROM THE WEST THROUGH MIDWEEK. ANY
PRECIP CONTINUING LATE SATURDAY OR EARLY SUNDAY SHOULD COME TO AN
END AS THE HIGH PRES AND DRY AIR MOVES IN. NO ADDITIONAL PRECIP IS
EXPECTED THROUGH WEDNESDAY. TEMPS SHOULD RETURN TO AT OR ABOVE
SEASONAL LEVELS BY SUNDAY. ONE POTENTIAL CAVEAT IS THE 12/00Z
ECMWF. IT DOES NOT BRING THE HIGH AS FAR S OVER THE ERN SEABOARD,
WHICH ALLOWS A WARM FRONT FROM A LOW OVER THE MS VLY TO MOVE OVER
THE REGION. DUE TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE HIGH IN THE GFS, THE
AFOREMENTIONED LOW IS FURTHER W IN ITS SOLN. THE ECMWF SOLN WOULD
YIELD A CLOUDIER AND POTENTIALLY WETTER PERIOD DUE TO THE
POSSIBILITY OF OVERRUNNING ALG THE FRONT. THE 12/00Z CANADIAN IS
VERY SIMILAR TO THE DRIER GFS SOLN ATTM.

&&

.AVIATION /13Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION IS FOR KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

AT 0830Z, CONDITIONS WERE VFR AT KRDG, KABE, KTTN, KPNE, KPHL AND
KILG. CONDITIONS HAD DROPPED INTO THE MVFR CATEGORY AT KMIV AND KACY.

AS RAIN CONTINUES TO SPREAD UP FROM THE SOUTH, CEILINGS WILL LOWER
GRADUALLY DURING THE TAF PERIOD. MEANWHILE, A BRISK NORTHEAST WIND
SHOULD KEEP VISIBILITY VALUES FROM DROPPING MUCH.

OUTLOOK...
THE POTENTIAL FOR RAIN AND LOW CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE FROM FRIDAY
INTO SATURDAY. DRY AIR SHOULD BUILD INTO OUR REGION FOR SUNDAY AND
MONDAY.

&&

.MARINE...
WITH THE HIGH TO OUR NORTH AND THE LOW TO OUR SOUTH, THE STRONG
NORTHEAST FLOW SHOULD CONTINUE ALONG THE COASTS OF NEW JERSEY AND
DELAWARE FOR TODAY AND FRIDAY. WE HAVE MAINTAINED THE STORM WARNING
FOR THE DELAWARE COASTAL WATERS, LOWER DELAWARE BAY AND THE WATERS
OFF CAPE MAY COUNTY IN NEW JERSEY, AND WE HAVE EXTENDED IT NORTHWARD
TO THE WATERS OFF ATLANTIC COUNTY. THE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL
600 AM ON FRIDAY.

THE GALE WARNING FOR OUR NORTHERN COASTAL WATERS AND FOR UPPER
DELAWARE BAY HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY NIGHT. AT
THAT TIME, THE WIND SPEEDS SHOULD DROP BELOW GALE FORCE THROUGHOUT
OUR REGION AS THE HIGH AND LOW BOTH PUSH FARTHER OUT TO SEA, TAKING
THE TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT WITH THEM.

A GRADUAL IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITIONS IS EXPECTED OVER THE WEEKEND.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
WE HAVE UPDATED THE FORECAST TO ADD THE EASTERN SHORE OF
CHESAPEAKE BAY TO THE COASTAL FLOOD WARNING. TIDAL DEPARTURES
JUMPED TO 1.5 FT THIS MORNING DUE TO THE BACKING UP OF WATER ON
THE BAY AND THE ONSHORE FLOW. WE NEED DEPARTURES OF 2.5 FT FOR
MODERATE AND ALTHOUGH GUIDANCE DOES NOT SHOW THIS, IT SHOULD
HAPPEN ANYWAY AS ADDITIONAL WATER GETS LOCKED INTO THE BAY WITH
EACH SUCCESSIVE TIDE.

WITH HIGH PRESSURE TO OUR NORTH AND LOW PRESSURE TO OUR SOUTH, A
STRONG AND PERSISTENT NORTHEAST FLOW IS EXPECTED ALONG THE COASTS OF
NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE INTO THE EARLY PART OF THE WEEKEND. AS A
RESULT, TIDAL DEPARTURES WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE. WIDESPREAD MINOR
TIDAL FLOODING IS EXPECTED FOR TODAY, WITH SPOTTY MODERATE FLOODING
IN SOUTHERN DELAWARE AND IN EXTREME SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY. FOR TONIGHT
INTO FRIDAY, WIDESPREAD MODERATE TIDAL FLOODING IS EXPECTED, WITH
SOME SEVERE TIDAL FLOODING POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF SOUTHERN DELAWARE.

THE STRONG ONSHORE FLOW WILL NOT ALLOW WATER TO DRAIN FROM THE BACK
BAYS OF NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE DURING THE NEXT FEW TIDE CYCLES.
MANY ROADWAYS WILL BECOME FLOODED.

THE HIGH SURF WILL WORSEN ANY TIDAL FLOODING AND IT WILL RESULT IN
MODERATE TO SEVERE BEACH EROSION. RAINFALL WILL ALSO COMPOUND THE
TIDAL FLOODING.

THE COASTAL FLOOD WARNING HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO ALL OF OUR COASTAL
COUNTIES IN NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE. IT IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1100 PM
ON FRIDAY. WE HAVE ALSO ISSUED A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY FOR THE
TIDAL DELAWARE RIVER.

&&

.PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

Re: Major Nor'easter Forming

#5 Postby Stephanie » Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:49 pm

Well, it took me 1/2 hour to go 6 miles through Atlantic City to the toll booth on the Atlantic City Expressway. There are 3 main roads that take you in and out of the city, Rt. 40, Rt. 30 and the Expressway. Rts. 30 & 40 were flooded (as usual) so everyone had to get on to the Expressway.

From what I could see from inside the building, the waves were breaking far out and were high. The wind was awful. My parking garage is 2 blocks away from the casino and I just ran all the way without the umbrella opened. One road that isn't that close to the back bay, Arctic Ave., was flooding. That runs behind our garage. I'm wondering if they'll have the employees park in the main garage tomorrow.

Cape May County, which is the the southern tip of the state issued an emergency declaration and strongly hinted to those living on the west side of the back bays to evacuate. The high tide is supposed to run 4 feet above normal. They are saying that this storm will be one of the top five for the area in history.

The Coast Guard is searching for 3 fishermen after their boat capsized Wednesday night. Why they would be out fishing as the storm was coming is beyond me. They only found an abandoned life boat from the vessel.

It's almost too scary to think about...

I was in our smoking area a little while ago and part of the dune in front of the Showboat was gone. The water was starting to come up and under the boardwalk and it's about an hour away from high tide.

Parts of the boardwalk were found in the street close to the marina area. People couldn't get out of Ocean City, NJ because all of the roads going to the mainland were flooded.

(HUGS). I'm home! :D

Driving home tonight seemed worse. I think that we were in a more wicked squall that came through just past 5:00pm in Atlantic City. I'm sure that there was more flooding after high tide for both the ocean and the back bays. There is a lot of water left from the prior high tides that didn't leave because they had no where to go.

This is definitely the worst I've seen down there. Floyd didn't compare down there. I think it's because it's been going on for 2 and 1/2 days straight that really will make this one for the record books. I'm anxious to read/hear about the damage to the homes, businesses, beaches, etc.

We had it bad up here, but fortunately, we didn't get the deluge of rain that occurred in NC/VA. I can't even imagine what it would be like if we took the same hit as our friends down south. God forbid we do get the hurricane we're overdue for! This was tropical storm strength only.

My problem was the wind, the gust were strong! I decided to take the jeep to work instead of the van and the wind gusts were nasty! Especially where the PA/NJ turnpike merge over the Delaware river, it's really high there!

Lots of ponding on the roads, but no floods my way, but I noticed the closer I got to NJ this morning, the harder and windyer it got...and the harder the rain was.

Its still windy now, but not as bad...thanks for asking!

Here's an article posted by our local news radio station KYW1060 at about 1:30 this afternoon:

High Winds, High Water

KYW Newsradio Team Coverage

The remnants of Hurricane Ida have been blasting areas of the East Coast for the better part of four days, and the storm was flooding town at the Jersey shore. High winds and high water have prompted Cape May County officials to declare a state of emergency.

Authorities were investigating the discovery of a human body that washed ashore in North Wildwood, NJ on Friday. Sources indicated that the body appeared to have been in the water for more than 24 hours, and investigators were working to determine whether the body was that of one of three fishermen who were missing for several days off the coast of Cape May.

Latest from AccuWeather

KYW's Michelle Durham reports that traveling around parts of Wildwood, NJ was difficult on Friday.

Robert Riegelbuto is captain of the Wildwood police force:

"It was difficult getting onto the island, between the George Redding Bridge and the North Wildwood Bridge being closed due to the high tidal floods. Most people had to utilize the Ocean Drive in Wildwood Crest -- but now that bridge has closed as well. So it's making it difficult for people to get in and out of the island."

Riegelbuto was bracing for the second high tide of the day, scheduled for about 5pm. In the meantime, he has this advice for anyone who still wants to come down to Wildwood:

"There's no need to come here -- you are not going to stop any property damage by coming here. The storm is going to do what the storm is going to do."

In Atlantic City, emergency management official Tom Foley says there was some property damage:

"We saw a lot of cars being under water and a lot of property damage with water encroaching. And we had several calls for people wanting to evacuated, but we had close to 50 mile an hour wind gusts."

So Foley advised everyone to stay put, so as not to put police and firefighters at risk while the water was receding.

KYW's Mike DeNardo reports that sections of 34th Street in Ocean City, NJ were practically impassable on Friday morning. The roads were not only completely underwater, but there were wind-blown waves on the water surface.

A few National Guard humvees were on the streets there, but not much else. Most vehicles weren't able to get through the high water. There was a voluntary evacuation in effect throughout Cape May County.

An Acme supermarket parking lot was full of cars, and not because they're having a blowout sale. The lot is on relatively higher ground, and many residents decided to leave their cars there to get them out of harm's way.

And it's not just homes and businesses that were in danger of serious flooding. The beach -- already damaged by significant erosion -- is getting pounded by rough surf.

KYW's Jim Melwert reports that this storm was forecast to be one of the worst since the the early '90s, and officials say it's living up to its billing.

Cape May County officials were urging people to stay off the streets in the shore towns.

The George Redding bridge into Wildwood was closed because of flooding, as well as the bridge to North Wildwood.

The Route 52 causeway into Ocean City is closed.

The entrance into Avalon was also closed.

Strathmere, NJ was severely flooded, as was Sea Isle City. Basically, the west (bay) sides of all the shore towns were dealing with flooding.

Wildwood, Avalon, Atlantic City, Strathmere, and Sea Isle City were all dealing with high waters.

More Photos

Cape May County communications director Lenore Bonafonte hoped that some roads cleared up as tides moved out. But she says that won't be the end of it:

"We are still concerned about high tide this (Friday) afternoon, High tide on the ocean is 4:51pm, and on the back bay at 6:51."

Beaches also have taken a pounding, with a lot of erosion along the coast -- even some damage to the boardwalk in Atlantic City.

Atlantic City Electric was reporting about 1,300 customers in Cape May County were without power. Numerous schools in the Jersey shore area were closed for the day.

Click on the video from our local Fox News about the damage done in Atlantic City. The Showboat is right next to the Taj Mahal and I was able to see the destruction/removal of the ramps from the Boardwalk to the beach and from the Lifeguard building. Actually, what was a part of the steps to the Lifeguard building are in a heep lying next to the Boardwalk!

I can also see the cement manhole pipe from the smoking area at the Showboat that now sticks out like a chimney. That was all buried with sand.

We're in DEEP do-do when another Nor'easter comes a calling.

Re: Major Nor'easter Forming

We are fortunate that we did not get all of that rain that NC did. Our flooding problems would've been much worse. I think our main damage came from the relentless winds that tore up the beaches, dunes and boardwalks. It also kept the back bays from being able to release the water naturally during low tide.

I truly believe that this was our warning about our coastline and what Ma Nature can/will do to the infrastructure just along the coast when we get a hurricane. If we were to get anything similar to Nor'Ida in the coming weeks or winter months, there are no dunes to protect the boardwalks and the businesses that line up right along it. Up and down the East Coast we've put buildings on protective sand bars. We're asking for trouble.

Amen sister!! That has been my mantra for years!! They are SAND BARS, not solid land to build housing, etc. on. They are called barrier islands and dunes for a reason. Rant over. Obviously we are talking the entire US ATL basin coastline which includes the GOM.

Yes we are - Galveston Island is a GREAT recent example, not to mention the cities along LA, MS and AL. This is the first time I've really become truly aware of the destruction that could happen in my own back yard. We are not a "prime target" for hurricane and other tropical entities by the way we sit on the coastline, like our neighbors in the NC/VA border to the south or even Long Island and NE to the north. I've seen flooding here along the shore, I've seen dunes disrupted, but I've NEVER seen cement manholes fully unearthed, standing 6 feet or more high and ramps/stairs ripped away from the boardwalk before.

I've watched barrier islands vanish. Hurricane Isabel cut a new inlet into the Outer Banks...then people filled that inlet right back in >>
