How much does it cost to repair/replace it? Any plans to build QuikSCAT II?

There is no QuikSCAT II. Researchers have been working on a new satellite instrument called eXtended Ocean Vector Wind Measurements (XOVWM). There are no current plans to launch in the next 3-4 years (at least by NASA). If anything is launched before then, it'll have to be by someone other than NASA. Here's info on the next generation instrument:

I think it's safe to say that all we'll have is the lower-res ASCAT for the next couple of seasons, anyway.

I can't believe it happened that soon, I thought it was going to last another year or so. I guess we're going to miss it.

This really blows. I was hoping it would survive into at least the next season but nope, it had to fail on one of the most underwhelming Atlantic years in a long time :x . RIP satellite.

Maybe the budget will be approved for an earlier replacement now.
