Re: Eastern Caribbean - Centralamerica - Tropical Weather thread

#3301 Postby abajan » Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:39 am

Barbados has been experiencing gale force wind gusts with light rain this morning but things calmed down considerably.
Btw, has anyone noticed how dry the recent water vapor imagery is in our region has been lately? The dryness is off the charts! No wonder Jamaica is in the throws of a drought. Barbados’ rainfall this year has been way below where it ought to be too.

Our friend abajan talked about the dry conditions in some parts of the Caribbean basin but San Juan is on the oposite as it has an above average rainfall in 2009 although December has been below normal so far.

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM AST MONDAY...

A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM AST MONDAY.

LARGE PRESSURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIGH PRESSURE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC
OCEAN AND LOW PRESSURE ACROSS SOUTH AMERICA WILL RESULT IN BREEZY TO
WINDY CONDITIONS OVER THE NEXT 36 HOURS ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS
OF PUERTO RICO.

CURRENT OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 MPH ARE
OCCURRING AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET. HOWEVER...WINDS WILL
STRENGTHEN DURING THE DAY TODAY BRINGING THESE WINDS DOWN TO ABOUT
1500 FEET IN ELEVATION. DEEP VALLEYS AND LOW ELEVATIONS WILL SEE
LIGHTER WINDS DUE TO TERRAIN SHELTERING.

LOCATIONS SUCH AS JAYUYA...OROCOVIS AND BARRANQUITAS WILL EXPERIENCE
THE STRONGEST WINDS FOR THE LONGEST TIME PERIOD. LOWER ELEVATIONS
MAY STILL SEE GUSTS TO 25 TO 30 MPH ON AN OCCASIONAL
BASIS...ESPECIALLY ALONG THE NORTHERN WINDWARD COAST.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS OF PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S VIRGIN ISLANDS.

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF 25 MPH OR
GREATER ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. PEOPLE IN THE
ADVISORY AREA SHOULD SECURE ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR ITEMS SUCH AS GARBAGE
CANS OR LAWN FURNITURE. TRUCKS AND HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES SHOULD BE
PREPARED FOR STRONG GUSTY WINDS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS HIGHER TERRAIN
AND MOUNTAIN PASSES.

You literaly dont have to take a cruise to the Caribbean as there are many web cams posted at the first post of thread that it looks like a tour :) By doing this, the members dont have to navigate thru the pages looking for the cams as they are in one place.Radars from Cuba,Martinique and Cancun also have been added. As I have said before, these radars and cams will be very useful in the future when an area in particular may be affected by a tropical system or any other big weather event so we can see what is going on.If anyone has more cams, bring them here to then have the biggest album of web cams in the net.

Macrocane,I added to the 1rst post of cams one from San Salvador Volcano.

Also a Bermuda cam has been added as there are many people who live in the Caribbean islands that are from Bermuda and they go to the stormcarib.com site that has a parthnership with us.

I went to work and came back via my little dinghy...I think I could have turned the engine off and just let the wind and current push me along! Very choppy and windy but no danger, pretty fun really (I have a hard, big Tortola dinghy, so that helps). I wouldn't have wanted to leave the bay though!

Winter-like pattern to continue this week

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
341 PM AST SUN DEC 13 2009

.SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE MOVING ACROSS THE WESTERN ATLANTIC WILL
MAINTAIN BREEZY CONDITIONS ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS FOR THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS. WINDS WILL BE THE STRONGEST ACROSS HIGHER
ELEVATIONS...WITH A WIND ADVISORY REMAINING IN EFFECT FOR
ELEVATIONS OF 1500 FEET AND ABOVE ACROSS PUERTO RICO THROUGH 9 AM
AST MONDAY MORNING. PATCHY MOISTURE WILL ALSO BRING QUICK PASSING
SHOWERS ACROSS THE ISLANDS THROUGH AT LEAST THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK.

&&

.DISCUSSION...STRONG WINDS HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS PUERTO RICO
TODAY...WITH A DECREASE IN WINDS EXPECTED ACROSS LOWER ELEVATIONS
AS THE WINDS BEGIN TO DECOUPLE DURING THE EARLY EVENING HOURS. WILL
STILL SEE SOME GUSTY WINDS WITH SHOWERS OVERNIGHT...BUT CONTINUE
TO THINK SUSTAINED WINDS WILL BE HIGHEST ABOVE 1500 FEET...SO DID
NOT ALTER PREVIOUS ADVISORY.

EXPECT A FAIRLY TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT TO PERSIST ACROSS THE
LOCAL ISLANDS THROUGH WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY...RESULTING IN BREEZY
TO OCCASIONALLY WINDY CONDITIONS THROUGH MID WEEK. IN ADDITION...AMPLE
MOISTURE UPSTREAM OF THE ISLANDS WILL RACE BY FROM TIME TO
TIME...BRINGING QUICK PASSING SHOWERS...ESPECIALLY DURING THE EVENING
AND OVERNIGHT HOURS. A FAIRLY SIGNIFICANT BATCH OF MOISTURE
EXTENDING JUST EAST NORTHEASTWARD TO THE NORTH OF THE NORTHERN
LEEWARD ISLANDS...WILL BRING SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS FROM
SAINT THOMAS ACROSS NORTHEASTERN SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO OVERNIGHT
THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

MAY SEE A CHANGE IN THIS PERSISTENT WINTER LIKE WEATHER PATTERN BY
NEXT WEEKEND WHEN WINDS TURN MORE SOUTHERLY...BUT PREVIOUS
FORECAST ALREADY HINTED AT THIS AND NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES MADE TO
EXTENDED FORECAST THIS AFTERNOON.

&&

.AVIATION...MOSTLY VFR CONDITIONS EXPECTED AT ALL LOCAL TERMINAL
AERODROMES OVERNIGHT TONIGHT. PASSING CLOUDS AND SHOWERS WILL BRING
BRIEF MVFR EN ROUTE BTW THE NORTHERN LEEWARDS AND EASTERN PUERTO
RICO...AS WELL AS MTN TOP OBSCURATIONS ACROSS ERN PR BTW 1402/1412Z.
HOWEVER...NO SIGNIFICANT OPERATIONAL IMPACTS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME
AS VFR CONDS WILL PREVAIL.

&&

.MARINE...ROUGH AND HAZARDOUS MARINE CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE ACROSS LARGE SECTIONS OF THE LOCAL WATERS FOR THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS...AS STRONG WINDS...LARGE WIND WAVES...AND NORTHERLY
SWELL AFFECT THE REGIONAL WATERS.

Weather Forecast for the SSS Islands valid until Tuesday morning 06:00 hours December 15, 2009.
Issued: Monday, December 14, 2009 06:00 A.S.T. (10:00 UTC.)

...A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR ALL THE OPEN WATERS DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND ABOVE NORMAL SEAS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE...
Weather:
Today morning through Tuesday morning: Partly cloudy, at times briefly mostly cloudy with a few passing showers; breezy.

Forecast high will be 29 °C, 84 °F. and low about 24 °C, 75 °F.
Sunrise will occur at 6:35 A.M. and Sunset will occur at 5:39 P.M.

Winds:
Today: East to Northeast, 15 to 25 miles per hour with occasional gusts to 30 miles per hour.
Tonight through Tuesday morning: East Northeast and 12 to 22 miles per hour with occasional gusts to 28 miles per hour.

Synopsis: Fresh trade winds will continue across the region through Tuesday evening as a tight pressure gradient between the Atlantic High pressure and a broad low pressure over Colombia persists. Otherwise, patches of low level clouds with embedded isolated showers will continue to move across the local region bringing periods of cloudiness and passing showers to the islands. However, no significant rainfall is expected with this shower activity. As for marine conditions, Rough and hazardous seas will continue in response to the increasing winds across the regional waters today. As a result Small Craft Advisories will remain in effect until further notice.

Sea Conditions: Choppy to locally very rough with waves between 4 and 8 feet. The highest waves will be over the open waters and off the North and East facing shores.

First hints of a cold front passage on Christmas day thru the NE Caribbean. But as they say,is still far to know what exactly will occur so stay tuned.

http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php ... glossary=1

AS FOR THE LONG TERM...MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST THE APPROACH OF A
FRONTAL SYSTEM ACROSS THE LOCAL ATLANTIC WITH INCREASING MOISTURE
ACROSS THE AREA ABOUT A WEEK OR SO FROM NOW...AS THE SUBTROPICAL
RIDGE SHIFTS EAST OF THE AREA...AND A LONG WAVE TROUGH MOVES ACROSS
THE WEST ATLANTIC. IF THIS PANS OUT...WE COULD SEE INCREASED
CLOUDINESS AND RAINFALL...POSSIBLE FRONTAL PASSAGE...AND SOME COOLER
CONDITIONS AROUND CHRISTMAS DAY. AS ALWAYS...THIS IS STILL A WAYS
OUT...AND WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR AND STICK WITH PERSISTENCE FOR
NOW.
