46 provinces in 13 autonomous communities are on alert today as temperatures as low as minus 11º are expected in some inland areas, with snow at low altitude.
Heavy snowfall in the mountainous regions of Cádiz, Córdoba and Jaén have put these areas on yellow alert, and there have been warnings of heavy rain on the islands of El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife.
Aragón, Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel are also on either yellow/orange alert due to both the snow and the sub-zero temperatures, with lows of minus 11º anticipated.
In Castilla-La Mancha, there is a threat of snow today and temperatures as low as minus 11º in areas of Albacete and minus ten in Guadalajara.
More snow is expected in the provinces of Castille and León de Burgos, León and Palencia, where up to seven centimetres could fall, and temperatures as low as minus seven are expected in Soria, Segovia, Salamanca and Ávila, similar temperatures to those expected in the Pyrenees.
Temperatures will stay low in the Sierra de Madrid where minus six degrees are expected along with five centimetres of snow.
In Galicia, snow is expected to fall in the morning at altitudes as low as 300 metres and many schools have remain closed because of the inclement weather.
Snow is also expected in Asturias (as low as 500m), Extremadura and the Basque Country, with temperatures as low as minus eight degrees expected in Navarra and La Rioja.
Alcoletja situated 739 meters high and 22km from Alcoy, sits on a hillside on the north side of the Sierra de Aitana. It is also gateway to the northern side of the port of Tudons (1024 m).
The snow started at 8:00 pm and did not stop all day. In just one day left snow depths over 50 cm in some places even hovering 1 meter thick.
Alcoletja was cut off and basic services like health, bread, the postman and council managers were unable to access the town.
The snow begins to congeal and take strength and several cm.
