Here in Rockwall, it's cloudy, windy and a temp of 39. Rained quite a bit. Need to check the rain gauge when I take out the trash.

Based on this infrared satellite loop, the upper low appears to be elongated in a west-east fashion. It also appears like it will round the base of the trough right around the Metroplex ... just as the 0z NAM and GFS suggested.

I agree that some communities close to the Red River (either side) are going to get blasted with heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions.

Still 39 degrees in Plano. When is the temp supposed to come down?
Are we going to get to freezing during the daytime?

Yep and those TxDOT cameras from Wichita Falls confirm ... I can see the white snow starting to stick.

It shouldn't be long now ... the second and more cold frontal passage is on your doorstep and with that and the approach of the upper low (which will cool air underneath it), your temps will start dropping more in the next hour or two.

Yep, Gainesville has been reporting snow at 37 degrees, so temps aloft are good for snow even if surface observations are still a few degrees above freezing.

Just got to get the surface temps to drop, something that should gradually happen as the morning wears on.

Portastorm, I hope so. Since moving here in 1979 as a middle school student, we've had some good snow on several occasions, but I can assure you that I've taken plenty of swipes at Lucy's pigskin myself! :D

Snow all day, temps dropping to the low 20's tonight. Possible White Christmas? Stay tuned.......... :froze:

For the record I stepped outside here in Denton and it is just nasty outside. I am about to start my pot of homemade chili so it will be ready for lunch, which I hope is when the snow starts to fall if not before.

Here is the latest from pro met Jeff Lindner ... you North Texas folks take note!

***********
Rough night over the area as squall line blasted through on Pacific cold front.

Full scale winter storm developing over NW and N TX will bring the first white Christmas in decades to N TX

Significant travel impacts today with large winter storm and powerful winds both at the surface and in the air.

Powerful upper level low centered near Abilene this morning will move ENE and then NE today while surface low pressure over NE TX deepens and moves NE. Locally lingering rains will end in the next few hours while strong pressure rises and falling pressures to the north create very strong WNW to NW winds today. Expect sustained speeds of 30mph or greater with 40mph gust. Clear skies tonight and snow pack across N TX will result in cold air drainage southward on light N winds with temps. near or below freezing across the region. Will only recover to near 50 on Christmas Day and then over the weekend high clouds may keep us locked in the upper 40's this weekend

N TX Winter Storm:

Near full scall blizzard will unfold today over NW and N TX. Reports from NW TX already have near white out conditions in heavy snow/blowing snow. Track of the upper low and dynamical cooling is close enough to bring heavy snow to DFW starting this morning into the afternoon. Sustained winds of 40mph with gust over 50mph along with heavy snow bands will result in blowing and drifting along fences, roadways, and buildings. Expect at least 1-3" across the NW parts of N TX with locally 6" possible. Drifting will be as deep as 1-2 feet in some locations. May need to go with a blizzard warning for portions of NW and N TX today. Air travel and surface travel will be nearly impossible under such conditions with white out conditions possible at times. Rapid accumulations and blowing snow may trap traffic on N/S interstates as powerful WNW winds blows near zero visibilities 2-3 feet off the ground.

This system will lift NNE into the Midwest tonight with a large area of adverse weather developing from N TX to Canada to the western Great Lakes. Travel in this area including several major airports will be hazardous.

Next storm system due in as early as Monday with potential for a mix of precipitation from rain to freezing rain to sleet as large cold polar high remains entrenched over TX. For now will keep everything liquid over our area...but newer data over the next 2-3 days may result in changes to the forecast for next week.

The 12z NAM is running now and suggest snowfall continuing well into the evening for you folks in North Texas. As others have said, the current forecast for the Metroplex, Wichita Falls, Denison/Sherman, etc., all look on track and supported by this latest run of the NAM.

Good Morning folks. We spent most of the very early morning hours without power here in NW Harris County due to the squall line. I have seen Jeff's email and will post some thoughts later. Stay Safe neighbors to the N. It's going to be an interesting day and the plot thickens next week... :cheesy:

Sometimes on the east side, we tend to get gipped with the forecasted amounts. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach with this due to history. In fact, I'm not expecting any snow until I see it falling. :)
