The following post is NOT an official forecast and should not be used as such. It is just the opinion of the poster and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological data. It is NOT endorsed by any professional institution including storm2k.org. For official information, please refer to NWS products.

If the wind doesn't relax soon we will not see our teens tonight. If the winds do relax and the clearing happens, hello teens all over the Houston metro area north of US 59. We have been at 28f since I got home and just now started down, so we will see what happens. if we go down as much as we did last night with higher winds and a higher starting temp then 20f is an easy call for the metro area.

edit: an hour later and it is now 25.1f and dropping quickly. Teens may not be a stretch after all.

edit:now midnight and at 22.8f!! If this drop continues through the night we will end up around around 16f or 17f!! :cold: :cold: :froze: :froze: :double: :double: :double:

Boy, it's cold! Image

Here are some current temps across Southeast and East Texas. The station just west of me had a low of 17° and the one just east of me had a low of 15°.
The last 2 readings down at the airport were 19°. I believe that will be a new record low for BPT. The previous record was 20° set in 1977.

Edit: BPT actually bottomed out at 18° - wow that it got that cold in Nederland! New record low.

We reached a low of 15.2f here at the house this morning!! The wind did settle last night and the radiational cooling took over for sure!!! Currently up to 25f. Looks like we will get above freezing for a while today. We're having a heat wave!!LOL!!

It's warmed up to a balmy 37° - strange how it doesn't really feel that cold after it being SO MUCH colder. :P

My dog is outside basking in the sun. The last few days, she would go out and pee, then scratch on the door about 23.4 seconds later. LOL

Oh wow. NWS lowered tonight's forecast low to 18° - the forecast low was 19° last night and it was 15° - 17° here. So tonight could be even colder. Geezum.

As I suspected, the cold air may linger a bit longer than previously forecasted. HGX thoughts this afternoon...another night in the teens for me it appears...

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
320 PM CST SAT JAN 9 2010

.DISCUSSION...
TEMPERATURES ARE THE MAIN ITEM OF CONCERN GIVEN THE ARCTIC AIR
MASS IN PLACE OVER SE TX. THE MODELS ARE CONSISTENT IN THE HIGH
PRESSURE DRIFTING EAST OF THE STATE BY LATE TUESDAY. RAIN IS THEN
IN STORE FOR THE AREA LATE IN THE UPCOMING WEEK AS A STORM SYSTEM
MOVES ACROSS NORTHERN MEXICO AND SOUTHERN TEXAS.

ANOTHER NIGHT OF VERY COLD WEATHER IS IN STORE FOR SE TX TONIGHT.
THE MODELS ARE VERY CONSISTENT IN FORECASTING TEMPERATURES
OVERNIGHT TONIGHT TO FALL CLOSE TO WHAT OCCURRED EARLIER
TODAY...GIVE OR TAKE A DEGREE OR TWO AT A SPECIFIC LOCATION. WILL
KEEP THE HARD FREEZE WARNING IN PLACE THROUGH 15Z SUNDAY.

DO THINK THERE IS A VERY GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT THE HARD FREEZE
WARNING WILL BE EXTENDED THROUGH MONDAY MORNING FOR SOME OF THE
COUNTIES NORTHEAST OF THE CITY OF HOUSTON. THE LATEST MODELS
INDICATE THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL ACTUALLY CENTER ITSELF OVER
THE COASTAL AREAS SUNDAY EVENING. THIS WILL BRING AN EASTERLY WIND
OVER THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES BUT WILL ALSO BRING THE COLDEST PORTION
OF THE AIR MASS RIGHT OVER MOST OF THE FORECAST AREA. AN INCREASE
IN THE CLOUD COVER IS EXPECTED AT LEAST OVER THE SOUTHERN AND
WESTERN AREAS...HELPING TO KEEP THE TEMPERATURES ABOVE THE
WARNING CRITERIA. FOR THOSE AREAS NORTHEAST OF HOUSTON...THE
CLEAR SKIES WILL AID IN BRINGING ANOTHER VERY COLD NIGHT.

Too early to tell as they are all still wrapped-up. I'll post an update tomorrow. I think the heaters helped last night, so I will run them again tonight. Forecast low is 19 again.

I've also heard this severe cold will affect the fire ant infestation. Possibly lowering their northern limit. I don't have any documentation......just what old timers tell me.

23.5F.....dropping fast.....was 27.6F at sunset.

That is good to hear about the fire ants!
Geez! You are a good deal colder than we are already. Currently 28.7f @ 6:51pm. We were at 31.7f at sunset. We managed 40f for a blistering high today, but we weren't out of the freezing range for more than 5 hours.
