AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX

.DISCUSSION...
RAIN CONTINUES TRAVERSING THE CWA FROM SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST.
BRIGHT BANDING IS INFLATING INTENSITY OF ECHOES AND PRECIP

INCH PER HOUR. MORE RAIN IS ON THE WAY...EVIDENCED BY LIGHTNING
NEAR DEL RIO. ONGOING FLOODING ISSUES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE
MORNING COMMUTE...BUT WILL EASE THEREAFTER. RIVER FLOODING WILL BE
MORE PROLONGED AFTER WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN THURSDAY.

BACK EDGE OF SIGNIFICANT PRECIP IS NEARLY COINCIDENT WITH 32F
ISOTHERM AT THE SURFACE. HOWEVER...FREEZING TEMPS WILL PROGRESS
SOUTHEASTWARD MORE QUICKLY THAN PRECIP ENDS. LAW ENFORCEMENT IN
STEPHENS AND YOUNG ALREADY REPORTING FREEZING RAIN. RAIN WILL
TRANSITION TO LIGHT FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE THIS
MORNING...PRIMARILY WITHIN THE ADVISORY AREA...WHERE THERE IS THE
GREATEST CONCERN FOR LIGHT ICE ACCUMULATIONS. TEMPS WILL
CONTINUALLY FALL THROUGHOUT THE DAY...EVENTUALLY ALLOWING SOME
FREEZING PRECIPITATION IN THE METROPLEX FROM MIDDAY INTO THE
AFTERNOON HOURS. SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ARE NOT EXPECTED IN THE
IMMEDIATE METROPLEX...BUT MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO EXERCISE CAUTION
THIS AFTERNOON. DESPITE ENSUING DOWNGLIDE BENEATH 600MB...STRONG
MOIST LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH FINAL IMPULSE ALOFT SHOULD ALLOW FOR
AFTERNOON PRECIP NORTH OF I-20. SNOW HAS BEEN FALLING AT WICHITA
FALLS MUCH OF THE NIGHT...AND FROZEN PRECIPITATION SHOULD BE THE
DOMINANT TYPE THIS AFTERNOON IN NORTHERN TWO ROWS OF COUNTIES...
WHERE DEPTH OF SUB-FREEZING LAYER WILL EXCEED 150MB. DRY SLOT
WILL QUICKLY END PRECIP SOUTH OF I-20 MIDDAY INTO THE EARLY
AFTERNOON.

Nothing like waking up to thunder and 43 degrees! :cheesy:

Austin area has received about three quarters of an inch of rain since midnight. Fortunately we didn't experience any severe weather ... just your garden variety thunderstorms with only one report I see of pea-sized hail near Leander shortly after midnight.

Storms woke me up. Lots of CTG lightning almost right on top of me at about 5AM. Had no idea there was a Tornado Warning until I saw this thread.

Anyway, just a quick shout-out and "Thank You" to wxman57 for his excellent analysis all week. As usual, you pretty much nailed this event and the worst of it was in the Panhandle & north of the Red River....just as you expected.

Yeah Jason ... he really did nail this event several days ago. Nice job, wxman57!

As someone else posted yesterday, I guess that 12z NAM run from the other day wasn't so off the mark as we've seen a lot of post-frontal precip. The upper level energy behind the front and surface is quite stout. Dang ... too bad most of us are above freezing. This could have been a real nice winter storm! :x

You know, sometimes I think I prefer the good old days like when I was a kid and got interested in meterology in the first place.

There would be a rumor of snow, ice, or freezing rain possibilities, then a few days of excited wondering, and then going to bed the night of the event...and then waking up VERY early to look out the window and see what actually happened.

Or not.

But not anymore.

Not with guys like wxman57 around to destroy ever winter weather hope and dream I have with each new model run that comes out!!! Phooey on that - I hate the models sometimes!

JK and LOL :D

Great job as usual wxman57!

Want to see some winter?

Check out the two I-40 Tx Dot cams west of Amarillo at Guhldkey (sp?) and Vega. No traffic, lots of snow, and looking very, very winterlike!
