Is this one of those 1:1000000 storms that will not happen again for another 20+years?

WFAA.com has a breaking news alert that says snow is expected most of the night.

While I know it won't snow this heavily that entire time, if it indeed snows that long, who knows how much will have fallen?!?

That does surprise me because GFS and NAM forecast soundings indicate that the air aloft will not be cold enough for snow on the MS coast until just a few hours before the precip ends Friday morning.

Both NAM and GFS have the snow ending near or shortly after midnight across the metroplex. Technically, that may be most of the night, or close to half the hours of darkness.

Nope...it will happen again, and people will forget about it...just like the 13" snow-storm that dumped on Victoria,TX in 2004.

Roads are getting bad. I wonder if the general public feels like it was warned in advance of this system???

I'm not believing my eyes. According to the latest update from the short range RUC model, another moderate to heavy band will form around the metroplex soutward around 5-6pm. It almost appears that this is in response to the upper trough trying to rotate and form an upper level low. It never quite does but forms another really nice snow band before the precip comes to an end around 10 or 11pm tonight. This one is obviously going down in the record books!!!

From the people I talked to, the general consensus is that this is what they expect from the professional mets in these parts. They have told me numerous times they feel more comfortable listening to an amateur like myself than anyone that's around these days. They said it just hasn't been the same since the great Harold Taft.

One thing about this whole storm that I must express my feelings on is how the FTW NWS office handled it. They see the same models we do, if anything with more information or detail. We even had Pro Mets on this sits saying watch out DFW area. That being said they knew this system had a chance to dump quite a bit of snow around the area. I think that some places of business and schools closed late or not at all because how many times have we seen last minute "huge" snow storms fall apart. Now while I have not watched the models prior to this winter would it be safe to say that the NWS knew this could happen and did not prepare people enough for what is coming down. Us Texans are resilient and will find a way to get through it but I wonder if the NWS will handle scenarios like today differently in future when models show this kind of scenario. The reason I say all of this is UNT was open till 12 today and I wonder if they would have closed earlier if the NWS would have been more aggressive with the forecast. When you count in all of the employees and 36,000 students trying to get in and out of Denton there is potential for accidents and so forth that could have been avoided if they were to happen. Anyhow, just my two cents. Enjoy the snow!! This is awesome.

There were a couple of models hinting at 6-7"...GEM/ECMWF. Precip water was .73" from the GFS so it was just believing the models.
