I wonder if this one was felt since it was so deep. That may be a stupid thought, but it was very deep compared to many we see.

Well I looked around a bit today to check for any reports of injury and did not see any. Yes thankfully this was a deep earthquake, albeit some reports of tall buildings swaying a good distance away. Not sure if much news comes out of the areas involved.

349.5 miles deep? Holy crap! I thought the Earth's crust was only about 10 miles deep?

Yeah, the Earth's continental crust is only 0-75km deep depending on where you are. So this eathquake, which happened roughly 560km down, had to have occurred somewhere in the mantle..probably in the transition area between the upper and lower mantles.somethingfunny wrote:349.5 miles deep? Here is an interesting article I found talking about deep earthquakes: http://geology.about.com/od/earthquakes/a/aa_deeEQs.htm

This earthquake was upgraded to 6.9 by the USGS. Perhaps this reflect initial seismology pickup then correction to epicenter? Also, shift from original location.

Just by basic search, not much if any comment from China, North Korea.
Here is one item I found about the earth's mantle:
Mantle: The layer of rock that lies between the outer crust and the core of the earth. It is approximately 1,802 miles (2,900 kilometers) thick and is the largest of the earth's major layers.
Here's a link to this EQ's seismology; the entire recording lasted almost six minutes, with two bursts it appears:

'The Associated Press reports that there were no immediate reports of injuries, deaths or severe damages and no tsunami alert was issued. For approximately one minute, commercial towers in Beijing began to sway slightly, even though area residents did not feel the quake."

This is like on Santiago Feb. 27 (Xinhua) a massive earthquake measuring 8.3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Chile early on Saturday, knocking out power of houses and driving people in panic to the street.

Greetings lucaspolan, and welcome. Are you in Asia? Yes, and Okinawa Island had a strong hit yesterday at 7.3.
I've posted this link before. It's an unusual map which virtually updates global earthquakes, tsunami's, volcano's, biological hazards, aircraft accidents and even pending world asteroid hits! Some might find it interesting.
