Re: Countdown to start of 2010 Atlantic hurricane season=68 days
I didn't know where to post this information from the South Carolina's emergency management but I think this thread is a good place.
LITCHFIELD BEACH -- Though last year brought more rip currents to the coastal Carolinas, the El Nino weather conditions kept hurricane activity to a minimum.
But changing conditions and computer models are signaling a more active hurricane season this year, as officials expect the neutral period between an El Nino and a La Nina to occur this season. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
rhill@thesunnews.com - Photo shows the mailbox in the front of the Roberts house during a strong storm surge on East Third Street on September 5, 2008, during the effects of tropical storm Hanna in Ocean Isle Beach. Because of ongoing beach erosion problems, many east end residents fear tropical storm Hanna could cause severe damage to area homes if it hits at high tide.
"El Nino produced too much wind shear, so they never got going," said Steve Pfaff, a National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologist who spoke Tuesday during the 2010 S.C. Emergency Management Association workshop in Litchfield Beach. "I would say we're going to have a much more active hurricane season."
And that worries emergency officials, because the coastal population and development continues to increase.
"We have a lot of population who have never experienced a storm. I can't imagine the type of devastation we would experience if we had a Hazel type of storm," Pfaff said. The category 4 storm roared ashore at the N.C./S.C. state line on Oct. 15, 1954, causing 95 deaths and $281 million in damage in the United States.
The official forecast for 2010 from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration will be issued May 24, but Pfaff said the information he's seen indicates a shift to more storms.

I'm counting down with you all, and hopefully this year will be the year I will begin to participate in much more of the discussion, instead of just lurking around reading it.
As long as none of the storms come in the May 20-28 timeframe and hit either South Carolina or Florida at that time, I'll be looking forward to tracking the storms (got a wedding/honeymoon that week).
From the sound of it, it looks to be shaping up to be another crazy season.

Yep looking busy, I have to say the east coast have been very lucky the last 10 years or so compared with other parts of the basin, mind you I suppose they deserve it after the mental 90s!
Still time is indeed ticking away!!

Re: Countdown to start of 2010 Atlantic hurricane season=61 days
Everywhere I look it's calling for a much busier season. My youngest is in school in Florida as well as living here near the Gulf ourselves. Very unsettling to say the least. He graduates 07/16 and will be coming home. It's much less stressful to worry about one location instead of two.
I guess the local emergency management officials and insurance companies have teamed up because they have a huge hurricane prepardness promotion going on here now to not only get ready with plans and physical supplies but to KNOW what the new hurricane policies, deductibles, limits and exclusions are in your policies and what they mean to the homeowner.
It's not too early to take some time NOW and organize all of your documents and have current photos of every single item you own with a detailed description of each. I cannot tell you how invaluable this becomes when you lose it all.
I pray that we can all enjoy a very active season of fish storms. Before we get started I just want to say thank you to all of you pro mets and avid weather guru's here for all of your help and information. I've said it every year since 2005 and I'll say it again, "It was Storm2K who gave me the knowledge and information I needed to get my family out ahead of the masses and were totally supportive when I came home to nothing." This group is the greatest. Thanks!

Re: Countdown to start of 2010 Atlantic hurricane season=61 days
Dr. Gray and Dr. Klotzbach spoke for about an hour at the close of today's meeting (National Hurricane Conference). Phil Klotzbach is waiting until April 7th to reveal the new outlook, though he said that looking at the 11-16 named storms predicted in December, he'd be leaning toward the higher number.
Here's a shot of Dr. Gray introducing Phil. Max Mayfield is sitting in the middle:

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The National Hurricane Center is considering adding a storm-surge warning to its list of watches and warnings issued during hurricane season.
Center officials floated the idea of a storm-surge warning on Wednesday in front of a crowd of emergency managers, first responders and meteorologists attending the 2010 National Hurricane Conference in Orlando.
No decision will be made for another two or three years.
