Added my name to the volunteer list yesterday.

I'm a mix of angry/sad about this. How on earth could they let the rig capsize and drag the riser 5000 ft down to the ocean floor like that? From what I understand, rigs like that not only have the blowout preventer, but also some disconnects at the surface. If the workers didn't have time to do the disconnects, then try something else. Even if the last resort is getting the Navy out there to blow it loose. That may sound stupid, and maybe it is, but drastic measures should have been taken to keep that thing from going down.

Hard to believe there was a far worse oil spill in the Gulf in 1979.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtoc_I (2nd worst oil spill ever; 1st is the 1991 Persian Gulf spill)

Hopefully, this spill won't be as bad, but I have a feeling it might come close.

I heard sirens come through my neighborhood about an hour ago so I got up to see what was going on, when I opened my front door the smell of diesel fuel hit me in the face, this is the first time the air in my neighborhood has had a diesel fuel smell since the oil rig explosion of almost two weeks ago in the GOM.

Huh?
It was reported yesterday on Fox Cable News that the U.S. Coast Guard was going to assign another person to deal with the press concerning this ongoing oil slick disaster because some politicos in Washington, D.C. feel that Ms. Landry is too closely associated with BP Oil. If I can find a link to the Fox news article I will post it later.

Local area fishermen in Bayou La Batre, Alabama met at a hall to ask a representative from BP Oil yesterday questions they had about the oil slick in the GOM only to be told by the BP Oil representative there would be no questions, she did furnish a phone number to call and an email address. The article is from Fox 10 News, Mobile, Alabama.

Beginning to get some rain in W. Biloxi today, hopefully the rain will disperse some of the oil smell that I'm smelling in the air today. Weather radar is courtesy of WWL TV 4's website out of NOLA.

Obama is sending in SWAT-video above. why SWAT? And two other platforms have been closed down. ALso the Russian navy is reporting that North Korea did this. There are just so many questions regarding what is really going on.

And neither am I. I do admit though, that I have wondered at times if this may have been a more nefarious disaster than on first blush.

Here is the full post to the above reference. Sounds really crazy:http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/7523004/

yeah, it does. let's hope that is all it is. I just keep wondering why SWAT has been sent to the other rigs out there.

Need to really hope we don't get an early Gulf of Mexico system this season, because we don't really need the oil being pushed inland too far, its bad enough as it is from the sounds of things!

SWAT teams? Huh? Could this be the reason the survivors are not speaking?

I have volunteered for cleanup as well here in the Pensacola area. I do wonder though, as to why the survivors haven't come forward to tell the American people what exactly happend on that rig. Fishing has now been banned, recreational as well as commercial...from Louisaiana to Florida. Lets hope they can come up with a solution to stopping this oil from gushing a MILE beneath the surface of the gulf, and preferably one that won't take 3 months to accomplish.

More rain has been falling here as well as more lightning and thunder. The smell of oil in the air has temporarily gone but I imagine it'll be back. Weather radar is courtesy of WWL.com, the website for WWL-TV 4 in NOLA.

I'm really astounded more people aren't commenting on this devastation. This has far worse implications than any hurricane.

This is an out-of-control, free-flowing oil source. There is currently *no viable plan* to stop the free flow.

Options:

1. We do have an untested, science fiction "dome-type device being" currently being engineered. 8-14 days away at best. No ideas if it will actually work at current depths.

2. We have an alternate well being drilled to possibly take pressure off the site (this will take 3+ months, at least) No ideas if it will actually work.

3. ???

beyond this - the oil will leak into the Gulf at rates beyond comprehension.
There is no definitive data as to actual rates. Meanwhile, marine life-kill has begun in earnest.

I am so frustrated - Pensacola has some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.
Our entire state and the gulf coast is in peril.
