Summer Plans

#1 Postby wx247 » Thu May 06, 2010 2:13 pm

School will soon be out for many and others generally use vacation time during the summer months. I guess my question is this: what are your plans for this summer? Are you cutting back because of the economy? Anyone going anywhere cool?

Planning to go to Florida in August. I haven't been to the beach in years and can't wait. Have some other possible plans that may or may not happen depending on money.

With the way this hurricane season is shaping up, I would move that trip up just to be on the safe side

Yeah, I drive 50 miles one way to work everyday. Lots of gas and toll $$. I'm afraid of what the summer will bring regarding gas prices. I have been thinking about trying to get a job closer to home. I'm sure that when the time is right, and an opportunity presents itself, I'll be able to do it.

I'm only planning on taking an overnight bus trip to Mohegan Sun in CT in August. I am trying to be frugal and I'm not too keen on flying anywhere these days.

I know what you mean about the tolls, I try to go the long free way once in a while but now that gas is going back up it's not really worth it.

I neer flew, we always drove, but this year I don't know, we need a vacation...we'll see.

Well, I do love Ocean City, MD and it's only a few hours drive. You can also hit the outlets in Rehobeth, DE on the way down. I hope that you are able to do something this year angelwing. :)

Depending on budgets, schools, and my own money comes along I may have a very big summer ahead. I have one trip confirmed, and 3 more on the probable table.

Confirmed: Orientation for FSU in Tallahassee in July. Should be a huge learning experience for me, and my first step towards moving away. I will also be meeting with my MET advisor for the first time.

Probable: Trip to Orange County, CA. I'll probably be going to Chapman University for my last Phi Theta Kappa International trip (International Honors Institute). This will also be my first trip to the west coast. I hope to go to Los Angeles as well. If I go, it will be for a week in June. the only problem with this trip is the cost, a total of $1500. :| I'm waiting on scholarships from St. Petersburg College to see if I can go.

Probable: 38th Conference on Broadcast Meteorology as a student member of the AMS. I applied for a grant through the AMS student travel grant program, and I am VERY much hoping to go. This trip would include the short course on tropical meteorology, including a trip to the NHC and AOML. I may decide that if the grant falls through just to go to the short course. Is anyone else going??

Probable: Trip to Fort Bragg, NC. Unfortunately, this trip will involve saying good-luck overseas to my sister and brother-in-law. They are heading to Afghanistan in the US Army for a year.

Along with all of these trips, I am hoping to get a job, and I think I have one lined up for about a month. Although I wont be in school over the summer, I will be extremely busy!

Nothing firm yet, but a possible trip to NYC or San Francisco. SF would probably be in September though. Of course funds availability is the driving force here.

Sounds like some great trips are planned for the summer.

I have a teacher conference in Louisville in July. Nationals for speech and debate are in Kansas City this year so not extremely exciting as far as the nationals trip is concerned. With the school budget crises in many districts this year, however, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The Florida trip is going to happen regardless(and I'm hoping to make a stop in New Orleans on that trip), but 4th of July I have some ideas for a trip as well, I was thinking Nashville and then maybe St. Louis(I have a tenative plan for this and it was made before the Nashville flooding recently), but it's very dependent on money. For someone who has never really traveled before I'm hoping to make this a productive year, each trip bigger than the previous. Likely doing a local trip to Birmingham/Atlanta May 22/23 more short-term. Beyond the summer, I have some really grand plans(outside of the Southeast), especially towards the end of the year, but that's too far out for specifics.

Hello everyone!

My summer plans are to come home from my deployment. (It's the beginning of May and we're already seeing highs in the upper 90s!) After a short recovery in Germany, I'll fly to Hawaii where I'll reunite with my wife and son and visit family before heading off to Missouri to visit more family and enjoy the 4th of July.

Our plane tickets literally have us flying around the world. (FRA-PEK-TPE-NRT-HNL-LAS-DEN-MCI-ORD-FRA) It'll be a busy early summer, but I'm happy it'll be with family!

Our daughter's not in school yet, so we try to vacation outside the peak summer months of June through August. We went to Costa Rica in February. We're doing a 5 day cruise On Carnival Inspiration out of Tampa in September with a friend of mine from college, his girlfriend, and his son.

Our incomes haven't been affected, and the "great recession" has actually been a fantastic time for incredible travel deals.

senor, that's great news and thank you so much for your service. :flag:

I have no plans. I'm hanging around the Burgh and trying to save some money. I'll do some much needed work around the house. :D

My sisters and I will be traveling to Oregon in July. The first part of the week-long voyage is reserved for the burial of my dad's ashes at Willamette National Cemetary. Following the service and visits with relatives, we will revisit the locations our dad took us to on our first visit to Oregon. It has been 10 yrs since my last visit and longer for my sisters...family and memories should make for a wonderful trip.

It really doesn't seem that long ago when you went overseas, at least to me. For you, it must've felt like an eternity. What a wonderful way to celebrate the 4th of July! :flag:

Great news, senor! And thank you. :)

I don't know what I'm doing yet. I took 2 short trips in April and we're debating a week long vacation for the summer, but it won't be anything extravagant. I am definitely going to get to some of those home projects done that keep getting put on the back burner.

I hope none of us have any unexpected "vacations" (evacuations) in what looks to be a very active season.
