LOL! Bob Breck here in NOLA must really think it's a Cat2 ....he's announcing the news for Alex's track and he tries to say "...The Nhc upgraded to a......a.........a....oh. A Category 1 Hurricane"

Quite funny, I remember mentoring under him for an assignment years back. Very charismatic, very professional. The first thing he wants to know is, after looking at a Water Vapor Loop, what do YOU see.

Edit: I'm speechless looking at this organization. Back when this was 93L the naysayers were consistently judgmental. This is NOT that sort of hurricane season folks. I can't remember seeing an A storm in June that had structure like that.

Wow, looks like some WSW is going on now. Just to note, there will be 2 intermediate advisories this time, so there is still a chance for a Cat 2 classification before or during landfall in 2 hours.

Winds should pick-up in Brownsville when that thick band hits.

Yep looks like south of west motion to me as well now, may just be enough to save Brownsville the hurricane force gusts that are in the convective band...

NHC did an amazing job of pinpointing to this area. Even when all the models said something differently, they stuck to their guns

It took Alex a long time to get its act together and he finally does so just a few hours before landfall. I think he can go up to 95mph right before landfall.

Yep Hurakan that does look like a decent hurricane, certainly is lucky its coming ashore when it is because I'd have to think a major hurricane would be likely otherwise if it has 12-18hrs longer...

I would say based upon what is happening to the Spill Site because of Alex, nobody was EVER interested in seeing that.

It seems like getting better organized before landfall was Alex's story. It finally got organized just before making landfall in Belize and then the same just before making landfall in NE Mexico

The gulf spill area is just a ticking time bomb, they lucked out with Alex but the season has just begun. Tomorrow is July 1st and we'll probably see another 7-9 similar storms like Alex, some a lot stronger too.

I saw on another site where lightning has been noted inside the eyewall with Alex. Isn't that usually a sign of either rapid intensification..or rapid dissipation?

It would be amazing if Alex can get below 950mb and not even get to Cat 2...

I might have missed this being mentioned before, but According to BBC news Obama called a state of emergency for texas.

US President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Texas as Hurricane Alex bears down on the coast with 80mph (130km/h) winds.

Looks like there could be a rapid deepening situation could develop in the next 2 hours. The pressure is dropping and the eye is getting more defined.

One storm this seems fairly similar to is 1975's Hurricane Caroline...struggled for a long time then rapidly deepened to Cat 3 on approach...

Looks like Alex has finally sorted its internal issues out somewhat just as its about to make landfall. The fact the eye is looking rather clear now is probably part of the reason why pressure has dropped look a rock again in there.
