Anyone Ever Go Back to Read Old Hurricane Threads?
Just curious if anyone has ever went back on STORM2K to read old threads from hurricanes that developed such as katrina etc?? I find it fascinating. It's like living the storm's progress and development all over again.....

lol yes i did that a couple of weeks ago. I was reading the Katrina thread and people were saying that it was headed for the Florida Panhandle at the most a Category 1. And then a few days later we all know what happened...

Many many times when the tropics are dead. Also go back and read NHC advisories and such.

I've recently started to do an overall page list, I find it interesting to see how long threads would be if they were in todays format...For example Dennis came in at 637 pages with everything and Katrina actually came in at 966 pages, which I believe is either just ahead or being Ike for #1 spot...
FWIW I bet the 1000 barrier falls this year if we get an Ivan type tracker...

KWT, wow that would be pretty crazy if we could break the 1,000 page barrier. But they might start a new thread to keep that from happening. I think they were doing that for a couple of years. Just starting a new thread one the older one got too large.

But from 2005,we allowed the threads to go as long a system is active without being locked and that is why you see in the archieves big threads. For example,Ike is #1 with 676 pages and was only the discussion thread, not combining the Model,Advisory and Recon threads. I can see 1000+ in a discussion thread this season for two reasons, there are more members and the expectations for a very busy season atracts more members to participate.
1. Ike 08 - 676
2. Fay 08 - 671
3. Dean 07 - 583
4. Gustav 08 - 520
5. Dolly 08 - 422
6. Ivan 04 - 352
7. Wilma 05 - 282
8. Chris 06 - 265
9- Alex 10 - 245
10. Erika 08 - 223
11. Bertha 08 - 222
12. Ida 09 - 217
13. Hanna 08 - 209
14. Ike models 08 - 209
15. Noel 08- 196

I'll also add I also add in all the other threads, like the model threads, etc, because before 2005 it is very difficult to seperate it into the format we have now...
So overall winner with everything combined Katrina actually comes out just on top with 966, Ike comes in at 959, and Fay I believe is in 3rd place...though its likely Ivan may actually have been a 1000 page overall system, but I've not had the chance to actually look.

Yes, I do go back and look. I do that for a couple of reasons. It is interesting overall to read about the dynamics of the system in its infancy through to its landfall or until it dissipates. Also, and this has been key for me, is to read through threads and see which users make quality and accurate posts (beyond the obvious pro mets). Then, I know who to really pay attention to when a tropical system is in action (who downplays every system, who hypes everything up, who talks out of both sides of their forecasting mouth, who asks great questions, who just puts filler posts up, etc). When and if you have time, it is a great idea!

You should post a member-by-member analysis guide. We could refer to it while reading threads.

I love reading the ones from 2003, which was my first year, as well as 2004 pre-Alex (which had Catarina, the May Caribbean system, and several areas of interest that everyone swore would become Alex but didn't).

I tend to look back at Wilma every once in a while. I remember checking in late the night that she broke the record and they had that pressure reading and just to see everybody's reaction to the reading gives me goose bumps even as I read it today. That was a historic night.

I've read the threads about Ike, Gustav, Stan, Wilma, Katrina, Rita, Dean and Felix, I think I'm going to read more in my summer vacations that start next week. I'm a member of storm2k since last year so I find very interesting to read the threads from the previous years it's kind of exciting to read how a storm developed, the track it followed, how the models and forecasts verified, etc.

I just wish we were able to see the images of the storms as they developed from wave to cane....That would be really cool.

Re: Anyone Ever Go Back to Read Old Hurricane Threads?
To get ready for the season, I will look at some of my old VHS tapes on Andrew/Hugo or my DVD of hurricane Katrina. I recorded almost the entire 2004, 2005 AB seasons on DVD, from CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, Today, and many other news reports including the Weather Channel. I also recorded specials on Katrina’s aftermath, and news stories that were also related. A DVR was essential for editing the information and recording the video to DVD's. Today I just observe no recordings. Your priorities will change as you age, which means I have other interest that come first.

MWatkins has always been extremely good with his analysis of storms. And he was always so informative when he posted here alot. My understanding is he started met school, but life did not allow him to finish, yet his analysis have always been very valued around here through the years. He explains things in laymans terms so well, as well as looks at all the possiblities with the dynamics of the different layers such as steering, etc. It's good to see he has been able to post more so far this year. He is working with Mark Sudduth and they chase some of the storms together to help get more data that is invaluable for future storm forecasting, thus when they are chasing he can't post here as often.
I know there are many here that are very good and he is one that always stuck out for me. I am sure there are many names others can add to this list of what I think we always called storm2k analysts, if I recall correctly, that did not have the degree but have spent many years analysing and becoming very knowledgeable.

I would say that each member would have favorites, just like we do with local mets.

Some of the most interesting threads were the Katrina ones, I remember one post being certain that NO would suffer no ill effect from Katrina, which as we now know busted rather badly!
