A P-3 mission is currently investigating 96L flying at 12K feet.

1002mbs is decent but as we found out with Alex background pressures are quite low right now in this part of the basin.

Re: ATL : INVEST 96L - RECON DISCUSSION
Yes, but this is significantly smaller than Alex was. Remember, the air goes from the mountain to the valley. If the valley is 1002 mb on this system and 1002 on a system like Alex, the walls of your 'canyon' will be much steeper with this system, thus a stronger system. Make sense? I swear I'm not be sarcastic or trying to upstage.

Indeed it is low, though I don't think the system is that small really...but still I get ya point. Background pressures have to be playing a part though in this...

As I posted in the Recon thread, from where the plane is flying, the wind barbs are kinda pointing the wrong direction if this thing was really wrapping up.

HURAKAN, is there another NOAA P-3 plane flying right now? I ask because the TWO said that.
THE LOW IS BEING INVESTIGATED THIS EVENING BY
TWO NOAA AIRCRAFT CONDUCTING A RESEARCH MISSION AROUND THE SYSTEM.

I think they should drop one on the western side of the Yucatan, the wind veering was mighty suggestive there is a circulation coming close to the shore.

Remember, this is a research mission, not an operational one.
